Brazil's Bolsonaro finds novel way to reduce 27-year sentence: reading books

Brazilian Ex-President Bolsonaro Seeks To Reduce 27-Year Sentence Through Reading Books

In a bizarre attempt to reduce his 27-year prison sentence, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's lawyers have resorted to reading books as part of a literary device in the country's penal code. This is not a novel strategy for a self-proclaimed non-reader like Bolsonaro, who once claimed he didn't have time to read and hadn't picked up a book since 2019.

Bolsonaro's case highlights the often-overlooked aspect of Brazil's penal code, which allows inmates to earn four days off their sentence for every title they read. This is exactly what happened when a supreme court judge authorized Bolsonaro's participation in the scheme after his lawyers made the request.

The reading list approved by the court includes works that tackle sensitive topics such as Indigenous rights, racism, environmental issues, and the violent legacy of Brazil's 1964-85 dictatorship – a period during which Bolsonaro openly supported the regime. The books on the list range from Ana Maria Gonçalves' 950-page "Um Defeito de Cor" to Philip Bunting's children's non-fiction picture book "Democracy!".

To benefit from the scheme, prisoners like Bolsonaro must provide written reports of what they've read. This is a unique approach that seems unlikely to win over fans among Brazil's notorious far-right politicians and their followers, who have long been critical of democracy, social justice, and human rights.

Bolsonaro's fondness for reading books appears questionable at best. In 2018, he couldn't even name his favorite book during the presidential election campaign. His interests lie elsewhere – with a book about Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, a notorious army colonel accused of torture during the dictatorship. This title is not on the approved reading list but does feature Marcelo Rubens Paiva's "I'm Still Here", a work that deals with the plight of prisoners who disappeared into such torture centers.

As Bolsonaro navigates his way through Brazil's justice system, it remains to be seen how long he will continue to read and whether the four-day sentence reduction scheme will have a lasting impact on his conviction.

I don’t usually comment but I think its kinda crazy that Bolsonaro is trying to reduce his 27-year sentence by reading books 🤣. Like, if someone says they don't even know what their favorite book is how are we supposed to trust them reading all this stuff? Its not like he's gonna be a bookworm or anything 😂. And the fact that its approved by the court makes me wonder if theres some other motive at play here 🤔. Like, maybe they just feel sorry for him because of who his dad was 👊. Anywayz, I guess only time will tell how this all goes down 💭

lol what a joke 🤣, like reading books is gonna save bolsonaro from 27 years in prison? that's just a slap on the wrist 🙄. if anything it's just another way to let him get away with some stuff. and what's up with the reading list, Indigenous rights and racism? really trying to educate the man or just pander to his fans who love that kinda stuff? 🤔 and seriously 950 pages of Ana Maria Gonçalves' book? that's like torture in itself 😴. bolsonaro's not exactly known for being a bookworm so I'm not holding my breath for him to finish all these books before he gets out 📚.

idk about this reading thing 🤔...if u r literally sayin someone who dont even like 2 read can still get off w/ readin some books thats kinda weird, but i guess its all bout them hours they "suffer" thru, lol 😅. cant help but feel like hes doin it more 4 the press attention than actualy gettin smarter tho 📚...i mean, if he's really so interested in learnin about Indigenous rights & environmental issues then why didnt he do that durin his time in office? 🤷‍♂️

man this just got me thinking about how we view education and personal growth in our society 🤔. like Bolsonaro is literally trying to reduce his prison sentence by reading books, but it's not even clear if he's really doing so or just pretending to. is that a commentary on the value we place on learning? are we more interested in punishing someone for their actions than in helping them grow as a person?

and what about the content of these books? tackling sensitive topics like Indigenous rights and environmental issues... does Bolsonaro think he can just learn his way out of his past mistakes by reading some books? or is this just another attempt to shape public opinion without actually changing himself?

it's also interesting that the scheme allows inmates to earn time off for every title they read. what kind of message are we sending when we incentivize people to read more books, but not necessarily to think critically about what they're reading? 📚💡

🤔 This is wild... I mean, who gets sentenced to 27 years for being the president and now they gotta read books to get outta it? 📚 Like, what even is that? And reading works on Indigenous rights and racism? That's not exactly Bolsonaro's strong suit, you know. 😂 He's got a history of being super dismissive of those issues. Anyway, I think this is gonna be an interesting experiment to see how long he sticks with it... or if he just pretends to read the books 🤷‍♂️

🤔 what's up with this? a 27-year prison sentence reduced by reading books 📚💡 that's not exactly the most inspiring news for democracy and human rights in Brazil 👀 i mean, who wouldn't want to read books about indigenous rights or environmental issues before serving time 🙄 and btw, jair bolsonaro has never shown any interest in reading...this just smells like another move by someone trying to get out of trouble 😒

I gotta say, this guy is literally trying to buy his way outta jail 🤣. Like, who reads that much? And which books did he even finish? 950 pages of Ana Maria Gonçalves? That's like trying to read an entire dictionary in one sitting 😂. And what's with the books on sensitive topics? Did he really think that would fly? He's not gonna suddenly become all woke and start caring about Indigenous rights or anything 🙄. But hey, I guess if it works for him, right? Maybe he'll finally learn to read (just kidding, lol)

omg this is so wild 🤯... i mean who tries to reduce their prison sentence by reading books lol... sounds like a pretty unique approach to getting out of trouble tho? 😂 in all seriousness, its kinda sad that he's gotta do this tho... i feel bad for anyone who has to deal with the justice system and stuff. but hey its not all bad, at least hes gonna have some time to think about his actions 🤔... or maybe just read a bunch of books until his sentence is over 😂

The notion that former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is attempting to reduce his 27-year prison sentence by reading books 🤔 seems like a rather...perplexing strategy. While it's laudable that he's willing to engage with material that tackles sensitive topics such as Indigenous rights and environmental issues, it's hard not to wonder if this is just another ploy to garner sympathy from his far-right followers.

The approved reading list does include some heavy-hitters, but it's worth noting that Bolsonaro's personal interests tend towards more...misogynistic and authoritarian fare 📚. His fondness for books on torture and dictatorship doesn't exactly scream "reformed character," if you ask me.

It'll be interesting to see how long he sticks with this scheme, but I'm inclined to think it's just a publicity stunt designed to keep his name in the headlines rather than any genuine attempt at personal growth or redemption 📰.

🤔 this is wild lol, i mean who tries to reduce their 27-year sentence by reading books? 📚 bolsonaro's lawyers are like "hey judge, let him just chill in prison for that long" but noooo, they're trying to get him outta there. it's a bit of a stretch, tbh. i'm not sure if he'll even finish those 950-page books 🤯 anyway, it's kinda funny that they made him read stuff about Indigenous rights and environmental issues. like, he was all about tearing down social justice while in office 🙄

🤔 This is wild 🌪️! I mean, I get that they're trying to reduce his sentence, but reading books about Indigenous rights and environmental issues? That's like, super out of character for Bolsonaro 😂. He's always been a polarizing figure, but this takes the cake. And can you believe he couldn't even name a book during his presidential campaign in 2018 📚😒. I guess you could say he's taking some 'time' to reflect on his past actions ⏰. But hey, if reading books gets him off the hook that easily, more power to him 😊.

Bolsonaro is getting a reprieve 🤔... reading books might just pay off for him! I'm not buying that he's suddenly developed a taste for reading, but hey, who knows, maybe it'll stick? 📖 His lawyers are definitely creative, using this loophole to his advantage. The selection of books on the list is pretty eclectic, ranging from serious topics like Indigenous rights and environmental issues to children's non-fiction 🤯 "Democracy!" sounds like a real page-turner! It's gonna be interesting to see how long he sticks to it and if it actually helps him reduce his sentence.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... 🤯 I mean, who wouldn't want to cut off 27 years of prison time by reading some books? It's like, if you're already going to be locked up for that long, why not use the time to learn something new or, at the very least, pretend to learn something new?

And can we talk about how this whole thing just highlights the absurdity of Bolsonaro's politics in the first place? I mean, the guy was all about tearing down democracy and social justice, but now he's trying to reduce his sentence by reading books that tackle those very same issues. It's like the ultimate irony.

But seriously, what does this say about the state of our justice system when someone like Bolsonaro is given a chance to "learn" his way out of prison? Is this just another example of how the system can be manipulated or is it a genuine attempt at rehabilitation?

Either way, I think we need to keep an eye on this one. It's definitely going to be interesting to see how it all plays out. 📚

🤔 so this is a thing now in brazil where they give you time off for reading books lol Bolsonaro's lawyers are like "hey judge, let him read some stuff" and the judge is all "okay cool i guess". 📚👀

im not saying it's a bad idea or anything but its kinda weird that someone who's been accused of being super racist and environmentalist hater has to read books on those topics. like how does he even process that? 🤷‍♂️

anyway i guess its good for him to have some time off his 27 year sentence or whatever. maybe he'll actually learn something new who knows? 🤞

I mean, can you believe this? They're literally trying to reduce 27 years in prison by reading books 🤯. I remember when I was in school, we had to read so many books just to finish our exams, but we didn't get credit for it. And now they're saying Bolsonaro doesn't have time to read since 2019? That's like me saying I haven't cooked a meal since 2005 🍳.

This is all pretty interesting, though. I wish I could see him reading some of those books, especially the ones about Indigenous rights and environmental issues. Maybe it'll be a real wake-up call for him... or maybe he'll just skim through them like he does with everything else 🙄.

And can we talk about how weird this is? A former president trying to get out of prison by reading books? It's like something out of a movie 📚. I guess you could say it's a real page-turner... haha, I had to 😂.

I cant even believe this is happening 🤯📚... Bolsonaro, the man who has made a career out of dismissing books and ideas that challenge his far-right views, now trying to reduce his sentence by reading some? Like, what's next? Getting a degree in social justice from Harvard? 🤣 It's almost laughable. And these books he's got to read... Indigenous rights, racism, environmental issues... are they really going to make him soft on human rights or something? 🤷‍♂️ I highly doubt it. This is all just a PR stunt to get sympathy from the masses and distract from his actual crimes. The man has no shame and it's honestly infuriating.

🤔 I'm not sure if this is a genius move by Bolsonaro's lawyers or just a desperate attempt to reduce his prison time. Like, who reads 950 pages of Ana Maria Gonçalves' book? 📚 But hey, at least it's something different than the usual appeals and lawyer drama. It's kinda cool that prisoners in Brazil can earn sentence reductions for reading books on sensitive topics – maybe it'll make them think about their actions and stuff. 👍 But seriously, Bolsonaro's gotta be like "what have I gotten myself into" when he sees all those books on his list... 📖

🤔 I mean, come on... 27 years for what? He's already served time, now he gets to earn some reading credits 📚👎 What's next? A PhD in environmental science or something? And those book choices? Really? Indigenous rights and racism? That's like throwing him a bone, trying to make him feel somewhat guilty about his past actions 😒.

..this guy Bolsonaro is either really committed to reading or just messing with everyone 🤣. I mean, 27 years in prison? that's crazy! And to get out of it by reading books about sensitive topics like Indigenous rights and environmental issues? that's some weird magic right there ✨. I'm not buying it, though. He was always bad at this non-reader thing back in the day 🙄. And what's with the book choices? "Democracy!"? come on 😂. I guess only time will tell if he'll actually finish reading them or just pretend to for a sentence reduction ⏰.
