Breakfast oysters and pricey king crab: Sydney's new fish market is glitzy and less smelly – for now

The article discusses the opening of the new Sydney Fish Market, which has relocated from its former site on Darling Harbour to a new location in Pyrmont. The new market features state-of-the-art facilities and a range of seafood options, including live king crab for $279 per kilogram and six Sydney Rock oysters for $16.50.

The author of the article visited the market with their colleagues and tried various seafood dishes, including tuna and salmon nigiri ($7.60), barbecue octopus ($18.50), and fish and chips ($17). They also sampled taiyaki waffles, a Japanese pastry shaped like a fish.

While the new market has a clean and modern atmosphere, the author couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the old site, which they described as having a certain warmth and atmosphere. However, they acknowledged that progress and expansion are necessary for growth and development.

The article also quotes Premier Chris Minns, who stated that the new market will have something for everyone, regardless of their seafood preferences or budget.

Some visitors to the market, such as Robert and Brigitte from Darwin, had a different experience. They were excited by the freebies offered at the market and enjoyed oysters for $16.50.

Overall, the article suggests that the new Sydney Fish Market offers a fresh and exciting dining experience, with a range of seafood options to suit all tastes and budgets.

I'm not sure about this new Sydney Fish Market thingy... I mean, who needs a fancy-schmancy market when you've got a great spot like Darling Harbour? 🤔 It's gonna be pricey, too, I can already tell. That king crab for $279 is outrageous! And what's up with the taiyaki waffles? A bit out of place, if you ask me... But hey, progress and all that jazz. Maybe it'll bring in some new faces to Sydney.

Ugh I'm literally so bummed about this move lol 🤕 the old fish market on Darling Harbour had such character you know? it was like walking into an Aussie institution or something whereas the new place in Pyrmont just feels like another soulless mall to me 🏙️ i mean don't get me wrong, the seafood looks amazing and all but can't we just preserve a piece of history for once? I had the tuna nigiri at the market and it was so good that my complaints about the new location were basically forgotten for 2 seconds, but then i saw how many people were there taking selfies in front of the gleaming glass facade and I was like "nah mate" 😒

I'm so down for this new Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont 🤩! I mean, who doesn't love a good seafood fix? The prices might seem a bit steep for me, but I can see why people would shell out the cash for those live king crabs and fresh rock oysters. I've been to plenty of markets like this, and it's always about the experience, right? 🤝 Like, have you seen that episode of "Squid Game" with the market scenes? It was all about the thrill of the hunt, but in a good way 😂. But seriously, I'm excited for some fresh seafood and trying out those taiyaki waffles - they sound like a fish-tastic treat! 🐟

I'm not surprised the NSW government would shell out big bucks for a fancy new fish market in Pyrmont 🤑. It's like they're trying to attract more high-end tourists and investors, but I think it's a bit too expensive for regular Joes like us. The fact that live king crab is going for $279 per kilo is just ridiculous! Shouldn't we be supporting our local fishermen instead of indulging in luxury seafood?

And what about the environmental impact of this massive expansion? The old market was already a bit of an eyesore on Darling Harbour, but at least it wasn't destroying a whole neighborhood. Progress and growth are important, I get that, but can't we find ways to do it sustainably? I'm glad Premier Minns is talking about accessibility for all budgets, though – more freebies like the oysters would be a great start!

OMG, I'm so down for this new market in Pyrmont! 🤩 They're really stepping up their game with the live king crab, $279 per kilo is still steep tho 💸. But for those who can splurge, it's gonna be a treat. I love that they have taiyaki waffles too, my kids would freak out for those 😂. But honestly, I'm all about supporting local businesses and trying new things with the fam. The freebies at the market are a great idea too, might just bring in some new customers from Darwin 🤗. Can't wait to check it out and see what's on offer! 👍

just heard about the new Sydney Fish Market 🐟👍 and I'm hyped! $279 per kilogram for live king crab? 🤯 that's some serious seafood luxury 😎 but at the same time, who can resist trying some fresh seafood nigiri or fish and chips? 🍣👌 i mean, it's all about trying new things and experiencing the best of what Sydney has to offer 💡 so yeah, let's get excited for this new market and all the delicious seafood goodness that comes with it 😋

😂 just saw this thread and I'm like wow 279 a kilo for king crab is crazy! lol what's up with that? I mean I know it's high end seafood but still. Anyway, never been to the old fish market on Darling Harbour, never had the chance to try it out. But I've heard good things about the new place, glad they're bringing some life to Pyrmont area. The taiyaki waffles sound pretty cool too 🤔

I dunno about this new Sydney Fish Market... 🤔 I mean, it's got fancy facilities and all that, but is it really worth the hype? $279 for live king crab is just crazy talk! 💸 You could buy a whole bunch of other stuff with that kind of cash. And have you seen the prices on the nigiri? $7.60? That's like, what, 5 bucks? 🤑 Not sure if I'd pay top dollar for some raw fish either.

And don't even get me started on taiyaki waffles... 🍳 Who thought that was a good idea? It's like they took a Japanese pastry and threw it into the ocean and hoped something tasty would come out. Maybe I'm just old school, but there's something to be said for trying some old-school fish 'n' chips instead of all this fancy-schmancy stuff.

Premier Minns says it'll have something for everyone, which is cool, I guess... 🤝 But what about the old-timers like me who've been coming to the market since forever? Are they just gonna be left out in the cold? 😔

OMG, $279 per kilo for king crab?!?! Are they kidding me?? 🤑😂 I mean, I know it's Sydney and prices are always high, but c'mon! You can get a whole salmon fillet at that price in some Asian markets... like what's up with the Aussie love for lobster? 🤔
