Over 80% of Philadelphia's Libraries to Open on Saturdays by January End, Boosting Community Resources

By the end of January, a significant majority of the Free Library of Philadelphia branches will be open on Saturdays, making additional resources and workspace available for students, families, and job seekers. As of December 20, the Paschalville Library had already resumed weekend hours, followed by the Bushrod Library's new Saturday schedule, which began in early January.

The library system aims to provide support and services that meet community needs, particularly during weekends when many residents have limited access to libraries due to work or family commitments. According to Kelly Richards, president and director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, "We are proud to continue serving our communities." By opening more branches on Saturdays, the library seeks to offer a wider range of services, including storytimes, books, and community resources.

The expansion of Saturday hours is part of the library's efforts to address budget cuts that led to reduced service hours in 2018. The library system fully stopped offering Saturday hours during the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed weekday hours in 2020 and 2021. This latest move marks a significant shift towards providing more consistent access to libraries, particularly for underserved communities.

While the exact timeline for opening the remaining branches is unclear, officials indicate that funding included in Mayor Cherelle Parker's 2025 budget will enable necessary staffing adjustments. A strategic plan for the future of library operations will be released in February following a public survey and town halls held this summer.

For now, residents can look forward to increased access to libraries across the city. As the Free Library of Philadelphia continues to adapt to community needs, one thing is clear: the shift towards more inclusive service hours is a welcome development for those seeking resources and support.

πŸ“šπŸ’‘ I'm all for this! More library hours means more opportunities for people who need them. I mean, it's not just about having extra books to borrow (although that's nice too 😊) but about providing spaces for learning, connecting with others, and finding resources for personal growth. It's a small change but can make a big difference in someone's life. Plus, with the rise of remote work and online learning, it's even more important for people to have access to quiet spaces and reliable internet connections. I'm excited to see how this new initiative will impact Philly's communities 🌟

omg i'm so hyped about this 🀩! philly libraries opening on saturdays is literally a game changer for students & families. no more weekday-only access for them, yay! 😊 it's about time the library system stepped up to meet community needs. plus, think of all the people who can catch up on reading or attend workshops during weekends πŸ“šπŸ’‘ this is such a win for inclusivity and accessibility. fingers crossed everything goes smoothly with the rest of the branches and they can stick to this new schedule 🀞

So cool that Philly libs are finally catching up with other cities πŸ™„. Like, who doesn't want to spend Saturday mornings trying to find a good spot in the city? But seriously, I guess it's awesome that they're making an effort to provide more services for families and job seekers on weekends. The fact that most branches will be open by January end is pretty sweet news πŸŽ‰, especially for those who can't get enough of library vibes all week long... but, hey, progress is progress, right? Maybe this means Philly libs won't be the only ones stuck with weekday-only hours forever πŸ˜‚

finally πŸ’β€β™€οΈ some good news! i mean, who doesn't love having access to books and stuff on weekends? like, it's about time our libraries caught up with the rest of the world πŸ™„. all this talk about underserved communities is great and all, but honestly, wouldn't opening these branches 5 years ago have been a better idea πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ? anyway, yay more saturdays at the library! i'm sure it'll be super busy on those lazy mornings 😴.

πŸ’‘ just thinking about it makes me happy that Philly's got more library hours on saturdays πŸ“šπŸ‘ its gonna be awesome for students & families who can't make it during the week, plus job seekers who need access to books & resources outside of work hrs ⏰ cant wait to see which branches start opening in jan u r u?

omg, I'm so down with this library expansion 🀩! I mean, who doesn't need a quiet space to study or get some books on the weekend? it's like, the ultimate game-changer for students and families who have limited access to libraries during the weekdays. I love how the Free Library of Philadelphia is adapting to community needs and prioritizing support for underserved communities 🀝. And can we talk about how awesome it is that they're providing more services like storytimes and community resources? πŸ’‘ it's like, the perfect way to foster a sense of community and connection among residents. I'm excited to see what other initiatives they have up their sleeve! πŸ’»

I think its awesome that Philly is expanding library hours on Saturdays 🀩! For years, working parents or students had to choose between studying/studying with their kids or catching up on some work, but now they can do both at the same time πŸ’»πŸ“š. Its really cool that the library system listened to community feedback and adjusted service hours accordingly. Having more libraries open on Saturdays will definitely make a difference for those who need resources like job training, book clubs, or just a quiet space to focus πŸ“ŠπŸ’‘

OMG I'm soooo hyped about this!!! 🀩 80% of Philly libraries opening on Saturdays by Jan end? That's like, a dream come true! I mean, I know some people might be all "meh" about it, but for those of us who need extra resources or just wanna hang out with our kiddos, this is like the best thing since sliced bread 🍞! And can we talk about how amazing Mayor Parker's budget is? πŸ’Έ Funding for staffing adjustments and a strategic plan sounds like a win-win to me! πŸ† I'm all about that community support life, and this just shows that our libraries are listening πŸ—£οΈ. Let's keep it lit, Philly library fam! πŸ”₯

omg i'm so down for this! πŸ™Œ it's like finally some good news about our libraries πŸ“š they've been struggling lately with reduced hours but now we can expect to see more branches open on saturdays which is perfect for students, families & job seekers who need a quiet space or just some awesome resources 😊 can't wait to check out the paschalville library again after it reopened and heard great things about the bushrod library's new sat schedule πŸ’ͺ

I'm loving that Philly's libraries are gonna be open on Saturdays from Jan onwards 🀩! It's about time they made more use of their hours since we're always busy with work and family stuff. I mean, who doesn't love having a quiet spot to study or hang out with the kids? The fact that they're doing this is super welcome news for underserved communities - it's all about making libraries more accessible and inclusive.

I'm also glad to hear that it's not just about extending hours but actually addressing budget cuts from 2018. It shows that they're taking people's needs seriously. And I love how they're engaging with the community through public surveys and town halls, it's all about collaboration and making sure everyone has what they need.

Now, I know some might say why didn't this happen sooner? But let's be real, things take time, especially when you're dealing with budgets and staffing issues. It's a big step forward, though! And hey, who knows, maybe we'll see more libraries opening up on Sundays too? 😊

omg i'm so stoked about this 🀩! as a student who's always on-the-go between classes and clubs, it's amazing that philly libraries are gonna be open on saturdays from january onwards! can't wait to catch up on some reading or work on my projects during the weekend πŸ“šπŸ’». btw, i think this is such a great way for the library to support students like me who have limited access to resources and study spaces outside of school hours πŸ‘. fingers crossed that they'll keep expanding their services too! 😊

Ugh, finally! The city's got some sense now πŸ™ŒπŸΌ. I mean, it's about time they started giving people access to libraries on weekends too 🀯. I'm all about supporting local communities and this is like, the ultimate move for low-income families and students. I've been saying this for years, you need resources available 24/7, not just during weekdays when everyone's stuck in meetings πŸ’Ό. And it's not just about having books on shelves (although, let's be real, that's a big part of it πŸ˜‰). It's about creating spaces where people can come together, learn, and grow. The fact that they're finally listening to the community and making changes is super promising 🀞. Bring on January and let's see this plan in action πŸ’ͺ

πŸ“šπŸ’‘ I think this is super awesome! More Saturday hours at the library means we can chill there with our kiddos or study with friends without worrying about weekday hours. It's like, libraries used to be these sacred spaces but they got a bit cut back... not anymore! πŸ™Œ

Imagine a map of Philly with all the library branches on Saturdays - it'd be so convenient! Even though there are still some changes to come, this is already making a big difference for community folks. Fingers crossed those remaining branches get the green light soon too 😊

Just what we need, more reasons to get outta bed on Saturdays! But seriously, I'm stoked that Philly's libraries are opening up more often - it's about time they catered to our busy schedules πŸ™Œ. The fact that they're offering more services like storytimes and community resources is a win-win for families and job seekers alike. And, you know, after the pandemic, it's about time we saw some real progress in terms of library hours πŸ’ͺ. I'm excited to see how this new initiative plays out, especially with the funding from Mayor Parker's budget πŸ“Š. It's all about providing equal access to resources, and that's something we should all be supportive of πŸ‘

Saturday's are gonna be super busy in Philly now πŸ“šπŸ˜¬ with like 80% of libraries opening on Saturdays by Jan end... good luck getting any actual work done at all 🀯. And it's not just that, but they're expanding services to include storytimes, books, and community resources... meanwhile, the world is still dealing with climate change and economic uncertainty πŸ’ΈπŸ˜¬. Anyways, glad they're trying to adapt, I guess πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

😊 I'm so stoked to hear about this! It's amazing that the library system is making an effort to provide more consistent access to libraries, especially on Saturdays when many people have limited time. πŸ™Œ It's clear that they're listening to the community's needs and adapting their services to meet those needs.

I can only imagine how tough it must've been for a lot of people during the pandemic when libraries were closed. πŸ’” But now, we get to see the impact of all the hard work that's gone into getting this system back on track! 🌟 And it's not just about the hours, but also about the services and resources they'll be offering. It's like, a total win-win for everyone involved! 🀩

You know how everyone's always complaining about not having enough time to study or look for a job? Well, this is like the ultimate game-changer 🀩. I mean, think about it - Saturday afternoons are usually spent doing, well, whatever you're into. And libraries are like that one place where you can just chill and still get stuff done at the same time. Plus, you got your storytime for the little ones, which is always a bonus πŸ“š. It's about time they expanded those Saturday hours - I remember when I was in school, we had to go to the library on Saturdays because our parents were working or whatever. It was super stressful. So yeah, this is a huge win for the community πŸŽ‰

πŸ€” I'm not sure why people are getting so hyped about this... yeah, Saturday library hours are kinda cool, but it's not like they're making the libraries open 24/7 or anything 😴. And what's really gonna make a difference is how well the staff can utilize these extra hours to support the community 🀝. I mean, we all know some of our local artists and musicians need spaces to create and perform... if that means more resources are available for them, then cool, I guess πŸ‘Œ. But let's not put too much pressure on this, it's just a small step in the right direction πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ.
