Canada's Summer McIntosh Makes History, Breaks World Records in Swimming Trials
Sixteen-year-old Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh has shattered not one, but two world records in a span of just days. On Saturday at the Canadian swimming trials, she broke her own world record for the 400m individual medley with a blistering time of 4:25.87, surpassing the mark set by Hungarian swimmer Katinka HosszΓΊ at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
This remarkable achievement marks McIntosh's second consecutive world record break in less than a week. She had already shattered the 400m freestyle world record last Tuesday, beating defending Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus' previous record of 3:56.40 by an impressive 0.32 seconds. Her new time for the freestyle event stands at 3:56.08.
The young swimmer expressed her emotions after her latest triumph, sharing that this was the first time she had truly heard the crowd during her race. "That's when I really vividly heard the crowd," McIntosh said in an interview with Reuters. "It's amazing to have all my family and friends in the stands, cheering me on. It really helped me in the last 100 meters."
McIntosh's impressive performance comes after a successful summer of competition. She made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 as a 14-year-old, finishing fourth in the 200-meter freestyle. Since then, she has won gold medals in both the 200m butterfly and 400m medley at the world championships in 2022, as well as two golds at the Commonwealth Games in the 200m and 400m medleys.
Currently training in Florida under coach Brent Arckey with the Sarasota Sharks team, McIntosh continues to make a name for herself on the international swimming stage. With her impressive technique and dedication to her craft, she is undoubtedly one of the most exciting young swimmers to watch.
