A crime scene investigator was targeted for execution in a brazen daytime attack.
On April 20, 2022, crime scene investigator Nicki Lenway pulled into the parking lot of FamilyWise to pick up her son. As she got out of her car, she was ambushed from behind and shot multiple times at point-blank range. Miraculously, she survived, despite being left bleeding and struggling to breathe.
Lenway called 911 but realized she couldn't speak due to the severity of her injuries. The call was taken over by bystander Emilie Clancy, who pulled up next to Lenway's car and took over the call. Clancy helped stop the bleeding by placing her jacket over Lenway's neck.
As the two women waited for help, they shared a powerful moment, and Clancy reassured Lenway that she wasn't alone. First responders arrived soon after, and Lenway was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Police launched an investigation into who could have committed such a brazen attack on a crime scene investigator with a history of violence against her ex-boyfriend, Tim Amacher. Officers spoke to Amacher in the lobby of FamilyWise and discovered he had been inside with his son when the shooting occurred. However, police knew it didn't make sense that Amacher could have been the shooter since he was inside at the time.
Lenway had a long and rocky history with Amacher, who had previously thrown her against the wall holding her neck. The two also engaged in a bitter custody battle over their son, which eventually went to trial in 2020. When it ended, the judge awarded Lenway sole legal and physical custody, leaving Amacher with just one supervised visit per week.
Police found security footage from FamilyWise and surrounding buildings that showed Lenway being attacked from behind by someone wearing a mask. They also discovered that Tim Amacher owned a black Dodge Ram truck, which was similar to the vehicle seen fleeing the scene in surveillance footage.
Using data from Amacher's cellphone records and his truck's Wi-Fi history, investigators were able to track the black Dodge Ram truck to Amacher's newer model vehicle. A huge break in the case, but it still left police with one question: who was behind the mask that day?
Police questioned Amacher again, but he denied any involvement before or after the shooting. However, when they spoke to his taekwondo student, Colleen Larson, she broke down and confessed to pulling the trigger. She told investigators that the whole thing was Amacher's idea.
Larson also claimed that Amacher had disposed of the gun. Despite her confession, Amacher denied any involvement in the shooting before or after it happened. He went on trial in November 2022 and was found guilty of premeditated attempted murder and aiding his accomplice, Colleen Larson. Larson pleaded guilty to first-degree premeditated attempted murder a few days later.
In the end, justice was served for Nicki Lenway, who survived a brutal attack that could have easily been fatal. Her bravery and resilience in the face of unimaginable violence are an inspiration to all.
