A new poll has found that more Americans now see the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as "too tough" in its operations, with a growing number of people believing that President Trump's deportation program is targeting more people than just dangerous criminals.
According to CBS News/YouGov survey conducted January 14-16, 2026, about half of Americans say ICE is too tough, and while Republicans have long supported the program, even they now feel the protesters have gone too far.
The program has roughly divided the nation for months, with overall support for it dipping. While strong backing from Republicans and especially strong backing from MAGA supporters remain steady, most people see a difference between their goals for the deportation program and how it's being carried out.
In contrast to its support, more Americans now think that President Trump's policies are unlikely to bring peace and stability in 2026. Most believe the U.S. has strategic interests in Iran but are divided on whether or not it has moral responsibilities there.
The idea of using military force to take Greenland is also facing overwhelming opposition across party lines, with large majorities thinking it would cause the U.S. to leave the NATO alliance and create instability in the world.
