CBS News poll finds more Americans say ICE being too tough; Republicans feel protesters have gone too far

A new poll has found that more Americans now see the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as "too tough" in its operations, with a growing number of people believing that President Trump's deportation program is targeting more people than just dangerous criminals.

According to CBS News/YouGov survey conducted January 14-16, 2026, about half of Americans say ICE is too tough, and while Republicans have long supported the program, even they now feel the protesters have gone too far.

The program has roughly divided the nation for months, with overall support for it dipping. While strong backing from Republicans and especially strong backing from MAGA supporters remain steady, most people see a difference between their goals for the deportation program and how it's being carried out.

In contrast to its support, more Americans now think that President Trump's policies are unlikely to bring peace and stability in 2026. Most believe the U.S. has strategic interests in Iran but are divided on whether or not it has moral responsibilities there.

The idea of using military force to take Greenland is also facing overwhelming opposition across party lines, with large majorities thinking it would cause the U.S. to leave the NATO alliance and create instability in the world.

I'm a bit surprised by this shift in public opinion on ICE, you know? I mean, I get that more people are speaking out against what they see as excessive enforcement, but at the same time, it's not like there's a clear alternative being presented 🤔. And with Trump's policies, I think a lot of folks are genuinely concerned about the unintended consequences, especially when it comes to Iran 🌎. The more I learn about this situation, the more I wonder if we're having a simplistic conversation about immigration and national security... don't get me wrong, I'm all for finding common ground, but it feels like we're stuck in this polarized loop 💔.

I'm really surprised by these new poll results 😲 I mean, you'd think that a program aimed at keeping America safe would have broad support, but now it's like people are starting to feel like it's targeting the wrong people 🤔 Like, what even is the goal here? Is it just about numbers or is it actually about making our communities safer? 🤷‍♂️ It's interesting that even Republicans are now feeling like they've gone too far - I guess even the most extreme supporters can see when things get out of hand 🤯 And yeah, President Trump's policies just aren't seeming to be resonating with people anymore 📉 Maybe it's time for a shift in direction? We need someone who's gonna make sure we're focusing on the right stuff.

I'm kinda surprised that more Americans are saying ICE is too tough... I mean, we've been hearing about the deportation program for ages, but I guess people are starting to wake up. It's not like it's a new thing, but yeah, the way it's being carried out is definitely concerning. Even among Republicans, there seems to be a growing divide on how this should go down.

I'm still all for keeping our borders secure and whatnot, but come on... let's make sure we're doing it in a way that doesn't target innocent people. It's like, we're already dealing with some serious issues here, do we really need to add more to the mix? And I gotta say, I'm pretty skeptical about Trump's policies bringing peace and stability... he's got a reputation for stirring up drama, you know?

And oh man, using military force on Greenland? That's just crazy talk 🤯. I mean, can't we just have a chill conversation with our NATO allies instead of going full-on warrior mode?

ICE is getting a lot of pushback from Americans right now... I think some people are concerned that the program is targeting too many innocent people, not just bad guys 🤔. It's like, you want to keep your country safe, but you also gotta be fair and make sure you're not messing up the lives of people who aren't hurting anyone. The fact that even Republicans are starting to question it shows that there's a growing sense of unease around this whole thing...

ICE is getting a bit too rough for my taste 😒. I think people are finally starting to see that it's not just about deporting bad guys, but also about hurting innocent families and communities 🤕. The way they're doing it now is like, overkill 💥. I'm glad some Republicans are speaking out against this program, even if others still support it 💪.

And let's be real, using military force to take Greenland? That's just crazy talk 😂! Who thought that was a good idea? 🤯 It's not like we don't have enough problems in the world already. We should be focusing on making things better, not expanding our empire 👑.

It's cool to see people having nuanced conversations about these issues, and not just sticking to party lines 🤝. Maybe now we can start to find some common ground and work towards solutions that actually help everyone 🌈.

man i'm seeing this poll and its like people are starting to question authority you know? they're not just talking about ice and trump's deportation program anymore, they're looking at the bigger picture... what does it mean to be 'too tough'? is it even possible to find a balance between keeping our borders safe and treating everyone with dignity? or are we doomed to be stuck in this grey area forever?

and what really gets me thinking is that even republicans are starting to question the program. that says something, right? it's like they're saying, 'hey, maybe we were wrong about who we're targeting all along'. but at the same time, there's still a lot of opposition... and i'm wondering, what does it take for people to come together on this one?

and have you seen the poll results on iran? it's like, half the country thinks we should be involved, but they're also worried about moral implications. it's like, how do we even navigate these complex issues without hurting ourselves or others? i'm just seeing a lot of uncertainty and doubt right now... 🤔

"Be careful what you wish for..." People are starting to realize that President Trump's deportation program might be targeting more people than just bad guys 🤔. It's interesting to see that even some Republicans don't think it's being carried out with the right intentions. And yeah, using military force on Greenland? That's a whole other can of worms...

ICE has been such a hot topic lately 🤯. I'm surprised that even Republicans are starting to feel the heat about how harshly ICE is enforcing those deportation policies. It's like, yeah we get it, some people are bad, but not all immigrants are violent criminals, you know? 😐 And now more Americans think it's targeting the wrong people entirely - I can see why that would be frustrating for a lot of folks.

And on President Trump's policies... it feels like he promised something and didn't deliver 🤷‍♂️. I mean, we've got Iran and Greenland going on right now, and honestly, who really thinks using military force to take over another country is the answer? 🌎 It just seems so divisive and reckless. And if that's what we're aiming for in 2026... not exactly the vibe I'd want for my future 🤔.

Wow 🤯 this is getting crazy! I feel like a lot of Americans are starting to question the whole deportation thing, even if they were initially on board with it. It's interesting that even Republicans aren't feeling strongly about it anymore 💡, and people from different parties are coming together to oppose using military force in Greenland 🌎. What's also weird is how President Trump's policies are not going over well now 😐, especially when it comes to bringing peace and stability... didn't he promise that? 🤷‍♂️
