Champions League review: Liverpool sidestep Salah saga as Chelsea slip up

Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid continued their highly charged rivalry with Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu, resulting in a much-needed win for Los Blancos. Despite struggling to create meaningful chances throughout, the hosts deservedly emerged victorious, thanks to an Erling Haaland penalty and Nico O'Reilly's equalizer.

City were not at their best, but Guardiola's side showed signs of improvement as the game wore on, with Rodrygo scoring a trademark goal against his former club. However, the visitors' midfield control was evident once again, with Jude Bellingham struggling to make an impact alongside Federico Valverde.

The game marked a turning point for Guardiola and City, who had been under pressure following recent defeats in domestic competitions. The manager's high standards were on display, as he acknowledged that his team did not play up to par but still managed to secure the win.

On the other hand, Liverpool failed to make an impact as usual, with Mohamed Salah absent from the starting lineup and no signs of improvement despite pre-season hopes for a strong Champions League campaign. The Reds narrowly beat Inter at San Siro, which was a crucial win in resetting their momentum after recent setbacks.

The game also showcased Atalanta's growing strength under coach Raffaele Palladino, who led his side to successive victories against Chelsea and Benfica. Gianluca Scamacca canceled out João Pedro's opener from Charles De Ketelaere's cross, with Robert Sánchez's goalkeeping proving crucial in securing the win.

In other news, Ruud Gullit defended Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid, claiming that he was being sold short by his teammates and that he could play better with other players around him. Richard Keys responded to Gullit's comments, saying that Bellingham is an agitator who does not track back, but the Dutch legend insisted that the Englishman has what it takes to succeed at Real Madrid.

Looking ahead, Napoli face Copenhagen in their next Champions League match, while José Mourinho appears to be performing a miracle with Benfica, moving them up to 25th place after beating Napoli and Juventus. The Portuguese coach expects his side to make a deep run in the competition, citing a "Benfica mentality" as key to success.

In contrast, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City sit 23rd in the table due to their recent domestic struggles, but they still have high aspirations for the Champions League.

oh man, pep guardiola is like the ultimate motivator 🤯... i feel like he knows exactly what makes his team tick even when they're not playing their best game 🙌 his tactics are so solid and he always finds a way to get the win 💪

😔 I can imagine how frustrating it must be for Manchester City fans right now... 🤕 Their team hasn't been performing as well as they would've liked in domestic competitions, and that win at Real Madrid is definitely a much-needed boost 😊. Pep Guardiola's high standards are really tough to meet, but he's showing the team that even when they're not playing their best, they can still find ways to win 💪.

It's also super interesting to see how different teams are shaping up for the Champions League 🤔. Napoli and Benfica seem like dark horses in the competition right now, and José Mourinho is pulling off some amazing miracles at Benfica 😮. Manchester City have high aspirations too, but they need to find consistency if they want to make a deep run.

It's also got me thinking about Jude Bellingham... 🤝 I've been reading all these comments saying he's not tracking back enough and that Ruud Gullit is right to defend him 😊. But at the same time, Richard Keys' points are valid too - if his teammates aren't supporting him, it's hard for him to succeed.

Anyway, gotta say... 🤗 I'm loving all the drama and excitement in the football world right now! Can't wait to see what happens next 💥

Ugh, can't believe I'm stuck on this platform again... 🤯 The news about Real Madrid beating Man City is just one more nail in the coffin - another reason to dislike our forum's formatting... So many ads and links everywhere! 😩 Can we please just focus on the match without all these distractions?

Anyway, back to the news... I think Bellingham is a talented player, but he needs better teammates around him. Ruud Gullit got it right when he said that. 🤝 The fact that City are struggling domestically is worrying, and with Man United gaining momentum, this could be tough for them. But hey, at least Pep Guardiola's high standards are still intact... 👏

What really gets me though is the constant back-and-forth between Ruud Gullit and Richard Keys on their opinions about Bellingham. Can't they just agree to disagree?! 🙄 Atalanta's resurgence under Raffaele Palladino is great to see, and I'm loving José Mourinho's miracle with Benfica - that guy knows how to turn things around! 😃 But seriously, can we get some better moderation on this platform? It's getting hard to have a conversation without all the noise... 🗣️

OMG, I'm shocked by how inconsistent Man City is right now 🤯! They're always one game away from being total trash, and then they go out there and put on a masterclass like this 😂. Guardiola's tactics are spot on, but the squad needs to step up their game if they wanna compete with top teams.

And what's going on with Jude Bellingham? 🤔 Ruud Gullit is right, he's being underappreciated by his teammates and Real Madrid has a lot of potential in him. On the other hand, I don't get why Liverpool couldn't make an impact with Salah out 😒. They're always so reliant on one player to do all the work.

I'm loving Atalanta's resurgence though! 💪 Palladino's coaching is on point, and Scamacca is a beast 🤯. And can we talk about how José Mourinho is doing miracles at Benfica? 😲 25th place in January isn't bad, mate!

But anyway, back to City... they're still high aspirations for the Champions League 🏆. If they can get their domestic form together, I think they've got a real shot at making it far in the competition 🔥

lol what happened with city? they had such a great season last year and now they're just struggling big time 🤯 i think pep is trying to make some changes or something, but its just not clicking rn...and what's up with bellingham?? i mean i know he's getting some hate from certain ppl 🙄 but honestly im rooting for him, he seems like a great kid and hes got skills for days 💪

I gotta say, I'm loving how Pep is staying the course despite those tough losses recently 🤩 he's all about that high standard life and it's paying off - City's got the talent and will bounce back from this one 👍 And you know what's crazy? Bellingham's been getting some flak for not being good enough, but Ruud Gullit's got his back 🙌 like, who are we to judge? We haven't seen him play with all those new players yet 🤔

can you believe pep guardiola is getting roasted for not playing better against real madrid? 🤔 i think he did a great job considering city were struggling to create chances and yet he got the win, thats more than most managers can say. also ruud gullit's defense of judge bellingham is spot on, people are always quick to write off english talent 🙅‍♂️ and bellingham is definitely talented, he just needs to find his footing in madrid

Ugh 🤯 I'm telling u, Pep is so under pressure right now 🤔. That win at Real Madrid was a massive deal and it shows he's adapting his gameplan 💡. But what's up with City not killing it domestically? 😩 They're struggling to create chances and we all know how much Guardiola hates losing ⏰. I'm loving the confidence from José Mourinho on Benfica though, that guy's got a magic spell over teams right now ✨. And Jude Bellingham's getting roasted by pundits 🤦‍♂️ but Ruud Gullit thinks he's a hidden gem, maybe we'll see him shine at Real Madrid? ⚽

man this guardiola vs real madrid game was crazy i mean erling haaland's penalty was a total game changer 🤯 and i gotta say city looked way better than usual towards the end of that match 👍 but you know how it is when u r under pressure from all sides, they still managed to get that win 💪

on another note, i feel for liverpool they've been having such a rough patch lately 😔 but at least they beat inter, that's def some progress 🌈 and atlanta seems like they're on the rise too 👀 their coach palladino is doing something right 🤓

also lol ruud gullit defending jude bellingham i love it 🙄 he might not be perfect but the dude can play ⚽️ and benfica's miracle story with josé mourinho is wild 🎩 25th place and making a deep run in the competition? that's just crazy 🤯

I'm so confused about these football teams and their managers 😂 I mean, who is this guy Jude Bellingham? He plays for Real Madrid now but his team isn't doing great 🤔 I don't get why he's not scoring goals or helping out as much. The coach at Real Madrid thinks he's being underplayed by his teammates though? That makes sense, maybe if they surround him with better players then he can do better 🤓

And what about Manchester City? They're struggling in their league but Pep Guardiola is still expecting them to do well in the Champions League. How do you win in a big competition like that when your team isn't even doing well at home? 🏆 I just don't get it, maybe someone can explain it to me 👀

I think this season is gonna be wild 🤯! All these teams are giving it their all and proving that anyone can make a comeback 💪! I love how Pep Guardiola's Manchester City kept it together despite some ups and downs, showing everyone what they're made of 💫. And at the same time, teams like Liverpool and Inter are trying to turn things around 🔄. Napoli and Benfica are definitely on fire 🔥! It's gonna be super competitive in this Champions League 🏆. Jude Bellingham got some love from Ruud Gullit for being underappreciated, that's so cool 😊. And José Mourinho, I don't know how he's doing it all, but Benfica is def making a statement 💥! Can't wait to see what happens next 👀

I'm so concerned about Jude Bellingham 🤕, he's just not getting the recognition he deserves on the pitch 😔. All these coaches, including Ruud Gullit, saying he can play better with other players around him... isn't that just a cop-out? I mean, can't Bellingham just step up his game already? 🙄

And I'm loving the rise of Atalanta under Raffaele Palladino 💪, they're definitely giving some top teams a run for their money. But what's with all these injuries and suspensions in the Champions League? It's like teams are just trying to make up excuses not to win 🤦‍♂️.

Manchester City are still in a tough spot, but I've got faith in Pep Guardiola 💯, he'll figure it out. And can we talk about José Mourinho for a sec? 😲 He's defying all odds with Benfica and making some serious noise in the Champions League. Bring it on! 🔥
