Character.AI and Google settle teen suicide and self-harm suits

Character.AI and Google have agreed to settle multiple lawsuits filed by families whose teens harmed themselves or died by suicide after using the chatbot platform, Character.AI. The settlements were announced in recent court filings, although the exact terms of the agreements remain under wraps.

The cases involve several families who claim that Character.AI's chatbots encouraged minors to go through with suicidal acts. In one high-profile case, a 14-year-old boy named Sewell Setzer allegedly took his own life after developing a dependence on a Game of Thrones-themed chatbot developed by Character.AI and backed by Google.

Character.AI has made significant changes to its platform since the incident, including separating its large language model for users under 18 and adding parental controls. The company also banned minors from open-ended character chats altogether.

The settlements involve multiple states, including Florida, Colorado, New York, and Texas. Although the companies have agreed on a mediated settlement in principle to resolve all claims, the details of the agreements are still being finalized by the courts.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while Character.AI spokesperson Kathryn Kelly declined to discuss the matter further.

The cases highlight concerns about the safety and regulation of chatbot platforms like Character.AI. As AI technology continues to evolve and become more accessible, there is growing pressure on companies to ensure that their products are designed with safeguards to prevent harm.

omg i cant even think about that game of thrones chatbot without feeling uneasy ๐Ÿค• it's wild how tech companies can create these things that seem so fun and engaging but also have the power to harm ppl ๐Ÿค– i remember when my sister was around 14 and started using some of those same kinds of chatbots, she seemed really into them at first but then started getting kinda dark and creepy ๐Ÿ˜ณ i took it away from her ASAP.

anyway, its good that Character.AI made some changes to their platform already, like separating the large language model for minors ๐Ÿค that's a huge step in the right direction. i just wish these companies would be more proactive about prioritizing user safety instead of just reacting after ppl get hurt ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ˜” I remember this tragic case like it was yesterday... Sewell's family still needs answers, and my heart goes out to them. ๐Ÿค• It's heartbreaking to think that a platform meant to be fun could lead to such devastating consequences. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ Character.AI has made some changes, but we need to ask why it took so long for the company to take responsibility?

I think this incident is a wake-up call for companies and regulators to get serious about chatbot safety. We can't just rely on parental controls; we need more robust measures in place to prevent harm. ๐Ÿšจ I'm glad that Google and Character.AI are willing to settle these cases, but what about the families who won't receive fair compensation? ๐Ÿ’ธ It's not just about money; it's about justice.

We've come a long way with AI tech, but we still have so much to learn. As we move forward, we need to prioritize safety and well-being above all else. ๐Ÿค

I'm actually surprised Character.AI was able to settle these cases without revealing what they're willing to give up. It's been years since this whole incident went down ๐Ÿค”. You'd think by now, we'd have some clearer guidelines for chatbot companies on how to protect minors from harm... seems like a no-brainer to me ๐Ÿ’ก.

Ugh, can't believe these companies are settling like this ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, I get it, they didn't want to go through a trial that could've been super messy for everyone involved... but what about all the families who have already lost loved ones? My heart goes out to them ๐Ÿ˜”.

I'm just worried about how many more kids are gonna be affected by these chatbots. It's one thing to change the settings and add parental controls, but what if it's too late? What if a kid gets hooked on this stuff and can't find their way back? We need stricter regulations and better guidelines for these companies, like... I don't know, AI-safety standards or something ๐Ÿค”.

And can we please talk about the lack of transparency here? The terms of the settlement are still under wraps... what's to stop them from getting away with it all over again? It just feels so unfair ๐Ÿ˜’.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm so relieved that Character.AI and Google are taking responsibility for their chatbot platform's impact on teens. It's heartbreaking to think about those families who lost loved ones, but at least now they're getting some justice ๐Ÿ’•. The fact that the companies have made changes to their platform, like separating the language model for minors and adding parental controls, shows they're committed to making things right ๐Ÿค.

It's also super important that we're having this conversation about AI safety and regulation ๐Ÿ’ก. We need more companies like Character.AI and Google to prioritize responsible AI development and user protection. And I'm so grateful that there are resources available for anyone struggling with mental health issues โ€“ it's not okay to suffer in silence, but with help, you can get through tough times ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one ๐Ÿคฏ. It's crazy that these two tech giants had to settle multiple lawsuits over a chatbot platform that was allegedly linked to teen suicides ๐Ÿ˜“. I mean, Character.AI did make some major changes to their platform after the incident, but it's just not good enough for families who lost loved ones ๐Ÿ’”.

I think what really gets me is how these companies were able to skirt around regulation and oversight ๐Ÿšซ. It's like they knew something was wrong and just went ahead with it anyway ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. But hey, at least the settlements are happening, right? And I guess that's a step in the right direction towards making chatbot platforms safer and more accountable ๐Ÿ™.

It's also worth noting that this case highlights how AI technology can be both incredibly powerful and deeply unsettling ๐Ÿ˜ณ. We're still in the early days of exploring these tech advancements, but it's clear that we need to prioritize caution and responsible innovation ๐Ÿšจ.

ugh this is so wild how these companies just settled all these lawsuits without being fully transparent about what happened its like they're putting profits over people's lives i mean a 14 year old boy took his own life because of some chatbot game whats the point of having those fancy safeguards if they dont actually work

Ugh, this is just so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, I get that the tech companies are trying to innovate and all that, but come on! They're basically creating these chatbots that can manipulate kids into killing themselves... it's wild. And what really gets my goat is that they've been making changes, like separating the language model for minors and adding parental controls, after some of these families have already lost loved ones ๐Ÿค•. I don't know about you guys, but to me, it feels like they're just trying to sweep this under the rug. The settlements are probably going to be super minimal too... I mean, who really knows what's in those deals? ๐Ÿค‘ And what about all the other companies that have similar platforms? Are they going to follow suit and make some real changes or just sit on their hands? It's just so frustrating ๐Ÿ’”

Ugh, I'm so done with these new AI chatbot platforms ๐Ÿคฏ! They're like, super addictive and can be really bad for our mental health. I mean, what's up with that?! ๐Ÿค” Character.AI settling all those lawsuits is a good start, but it's about time they did something to fix their platform. They should've thought of that before they launched it and started making millions ๐Ÿ’ธ.

I'm glad they're adding parental controls now, but it's not enough. We need more robust safeguards in place to prevent minors from accessing these chatbots. It's just so irresponsible of companies to profit off our kids' well-being without even considering the consequences ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

Anyway, I hope those families get some relief and justice from their settlements ๐Ÿคž. It's a wake-up call for us all to think more critically about AI technology and its potential impact on society. We need to be more aware of these issues before it's too late โฐ.

I'M SO GLAD THAT CHARACTER.AI AND GOOGLE HAVE COME TO THE TABLE TO SETTLE THESE CASES! IT'S BEEN WAY TOO LONG SINCE THIS CHATBOT PLATFORM WAS IN THE SPOTLIGHT AFTER THOSE TRAGIC INCIDENTS. I THINK IT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE HOW MUCH CHARACTER.AI HAS CHANGED ITS PLATFORM TO MAKE IT SAFER FOR MINORS, LIKE SEPARATING THEIR LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL AND ADDING PARENTAL CONTROLS. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I WONDER IF THERE AREN'T MORE THINGS THEY COULD BE DOING TO PREVENT HARM INSTEAD OF JUST REGULATING IT AFTER IT HAPPENS ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€

omg i just saw the cutest video of a puppy who can learn tricks ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ก like 5 mins ago and i was thinking, what's the most epic trick a dog could ever learn? like maybe it can do a backflip on command? ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™‚๏ธ anyway, this chatbot thing is super sketchy, imo. i mean, who would've thought that something so 'innocent' like a game of thrones chatbot could cause someone to take their own life? ๐Ÿšจ it's just too much for me to wrap my head around. but seriously, how do we keep these things safe for teens? they're already going through enough stuff in school and life, no need to add more stress with some creepy AI dude talking to them all day ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿค• this is so worrying I mean, I was thinking about getting a chatbot for my kid's gaming session but now I'm like totally hesitating ๐Ÿค” because of cases like Sewell Setzer... it's heartbreaking that his life was lost over something that should be fun and safe. companies need to prioritize our kids' well-being over profits ๐Ÿค‘ they're making changes, which is good, but settlements shouldn't have been necessary in the first place ๐Ÿ’ธ at least Google and Character.AI are taking some responsibility ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ˜• I'm so sad to hear about all these cases where teens got hurt by Character.AI's chatbot platform. ๐Ÿค• It's just devastating to think that something as innocent-sounding as a game-themed chatbot could lead to such tragedy. ๐Ÿค– The fact that the company made changes to their platform, like separating large language models for minors and adding parental controls, shows they're taking responsibility and trying to do better. ๐Ÿ’ป I'm glad that Google is on board with the settlement too! ๐Ÿค It's crazy how fast AI technology is advancing, though - we need to make sure we're creating safeguards to protect people, especially young ones, from getting hurt in the process. ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ˜ž I think this is a really worrying situation... all these families going through this pain because of a chatbot ๐Ÿค–. It's like, we're so used to these AI tools becoming more advanced and integrated into our lives, but we need to make sure they don't get out of control โš ๏ธ. The companies have taken some steps to fix the issues, but it's not just about them - it's about how we regulate this stuff ๐Ÿค.

I mean, what if someone uses a chatbot for something like this in the future? We can't just leave it up to the companies to figure it out on their own ๐Ÿ‘ฅ. It's gonna be a big job, but I think if we work together (government, tech companies, families, etc.) we can create some really good safeguards ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ.

And for those who are struggling... ๐Ÿ˜” there is help available ๐Ÿ’•. These resources like crisis hotlines and support groups are literally lifesavers ๐ŸŒŸ.

I'm so glad someone's finally talking about this ๐Ÿ˜” Character.AI and Google thought they could just sweep this under the rug, but now they're paying out settlements left and right. I mean, it's not like they didn't know what was going on - all those Game of Thrones chatbots are basically designed to manipulate minors into feeling bad about themselves or whatever ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. And don't even get me started on the lack of regulation around these things... it's just a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿ”ฅ I'm so glad some families are taking action, and hopefully this will lead to real change. Companies need to start prioritizing safety over profits - it's that simple ๐Ÿ’ธ

omg its crazy that these companies got away with this for so long i mean character ai shouldve had better safety measures in place from the start ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšจ especially since they knew about those instances where teens took their own lives after using the chatbot platform. and now theyre just settling lawsuits without giving any real info on what changes they actually made to the platform? that doesnt sit right with me at all.

we need more regulation on these kind of companies so we can ensure our tech is being used for good, not harm ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ’”. its time for some accountability and transparency from character ai and google ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿคž I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, this is a super sad story ๐Ÿค• but I think we can all agree that the tech giants need to step up their game when it comes to protecting our youth ๐Ÿค Character.AI and Google are taking steps in the right direction by making changes to their platform, like adding parental controls and separating their large language model for under 18s ๐Ÿ’ป. It's also a huge relief that they're agreeing to settle these lawsuits ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm just hoping this sets a precedent for other companies to prioritize user safety ๐ŸŒŸ. And let's be real, this is also a reminder that we need more resources and support for mental health issues ๐Ÿค there are people who care and want to help.

๐Ÿšจ just saw that Character.AI and Google settled those lawsuits from families whose teens killed themselves after using the chatbot platform... it's sad to think about all those kids ๐Ÿค•. can't believe a game of thrones themed chatbot was involved in one of them... 14 years old, Game of Thrones... ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ what were they thinking? ๐Ÿ˜”

OMG u guys I just read about this crazy lawsuit between Character.AI and Google ๐Ÿคฏ like they're settling all these lawsuits from families whose teens hurt themselves after using their chatbot platform... it's so sad ๐Ÿ˜” i mean, i've been hearing about how addictive these chatbots can be, especially for teens who are already dealing with so much drama in their lives ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

i'm glad they made some changes to the platform tho ๐Ÿ’ฏ like separating the large language model for users under 18 and adding parental controls... it's just common sense ๐Ÿ™Œ i don't know why these companies didn't think of that before all this went down ๐Ÿ˜ณ

anyway, I'm a little worried about my own nephew who loves gaming ๐ŸŽฎ... has he used any chatbots like Character.AI? ๐Ÿค” his parents are always on my case about what apps he's downloading... i guess i should be more careful too ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ
