Charles Barkley is set to bring his unique blend of charisma and love for Philadelphia to the Valley Forge Casino Resort, where he will be opening a steakhouse and cigar lounge as part of a partnership with Boyd Gaming.
The sports legend, who spent 16 years playing in the NBA, says he's thrilled to bring a new spot to the community that's played such a big part in his life. "We're creating a spot that's fun, comfortable and full of personality," he explained. "I want it to be the kind of place where people can unwind, share a great meal and feel that same energy and connection that makes that community so special."
Design renderings show a sleek, modern interior with abstract art pieces adorning the walls and elaborate light fixtures hanging over its dining tables - a nod to Barkley's NBA career. The cigar lounge next door will feature dozens of humidors lining its walls, private lockers and a full bar, all contributing to a "club-like" atmosphere.
While details on the steakhouse and cigar lounge are still under wraps, Boyd Gaming has confirmed that it will be making annual contributions to the Charles Barkley Foundation, which funds education initiatives for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The partnership also includes an agreement with Redmont Distilling Co., Barkley's liquor brand.
The Valley Forge Casino Resort is undergoing a multi-million dollar upgrade, with renovations completed on its 253-room Stardust Tower hotel over the summer and a new comedy club opening recently. A redesigned casino floor is also part of the project.
"We can't be left behind," said Martha Morales, vice president and general manager of Valley Forge Casino Resort, when asked about the competition in King of Prussia. With Barkley's involvement, it seems unlikely that the resort will be left out of the mix.
