Coven review – witchcraft musical cursed with cartoonish characters

Coven Review: A Witchy Mess of Cartoonish Characters and Simplistic Messages

Rebecca Brewer and Daisy Chute's musical Coven attempts to turn the Pendle witch trials into a flesh-and-blood story, bringing attention to the wronged women at its center. The production features a talented ensemble cast, including Gabrielle Brooks as Jenet, a woman who testifies against her family for witchcraft as a child. However, beneath its seemingly engaging premise lies a mess of cartoonish characters and simplistic messages.

The show's pacing is erratic, veering wildly between moments of introspection and broad comedic scenes. The production attempts to tackle complex themes such as the coercion of children and the targeting of poor, disempowered women by the church. Yet, these ideas are presented in a haphazard manner, turning what could have been a thought-provoking exploration into a jumbled mess.

The show's reliance on simplistic messages about empowerment and historical revisionism feels particularly shallow. The actors do their best to bring depth to their characters, but it's a tough ask when the script is so heavy-handed in its storytelling. Even King James I makes an appearance, offering his approval of the witch-hunts with a ruff collar that's more cringe-worthy than convincing.

The production's reliance on a "puppet" portrayal of Jenet's childhood self feels like a cheap trick, and the scene where Maggie gives birth is marred by a saccharine song about Mother Earth. The show's attempts at broad humor fall flat, particularly in the comedic enactment of misogynistic men from history.

Ultimately, Coven feels like a strange, unpolished soup of an idea rather than a cohesive, thought-provoking work of theatre. Despite its talented cast and robust onstage band, the production is brought down by its cartoonish characters, simplistic messages, and erratic pacing.

omg u guys i just watched this musical coven on stream 🤩 and honestly i was so hyped but then it just fell flat like the witches in the show didn't even deserve better than that 😔 the way they portrayed Jenet's childhood was literally the most cringeworthy thing i've seen all year, like what are u even trying to say with this scene?! 🤷‍♀️ and don't even get me started on the music 🎵 it was just so... basic. i mean, who uses a song about Mother Earth as a way to depict childbirth?! 🤯 seriously though, coven needs some major revisions if u want to make it into something worth watching 💡

I just saw this review for Coven Review 🤔🎭 and I gotta say, some parts really stood out to me 🙅‍♂️. The show's got a lot of potential with its talented cast and focus on the wronged women at the Pendle witch trials 💁‍♀️, but man, it feels like they dropped the ball on pacing and storytelling 🕰️. It's too much like trying to cram a bunch of thoughts into a bowl and then serving them up without even seasoning 🍲. I get that they're trying to tackle some tough issues, but if you're gonna do it, do it right, you know? 💯

i think people are being too harsh on coven 🤷‍♀️, it's a risk taking show that tries to tackle some heavy themes in a unique way. i love how they're highlighting the stories of those who were wronged during the pendle witch trials 💖, and gabrielle brooks as jenet is amazing 👏. maybe the pacing isn't perfect, but what musical theatre is? 🎵 it's just a shame that some of the jokes fall flat 😐. i'm still gonna see it again btw 🎟️

🤔 gotta say, i was expecting more depth from this musical, feels like it's just skimming the surface of a really dark chapter in history 🌑 the whole ensemble cast thing sounds promising, but it gets lost in all the clumsy attempts at humor and heavy-handed messages 😒 also, what's up with the "puppet" portrayal of Jenet's childhood self? felt super unconvincing 🤷‍♀️

I just saw this review for Coven and I gotta say, it sounds like a total mess 🤯. I mean, I get what they're trying to do - bring attention to these wronged women and tackle some heavy themes - but if you execute it like that, it's gonna feel shallow and forced. I'm all for powerful female characters, but when the show is basically just hitting you over the head with "empowerment" messages, it feels like a cheap marketing gimmick 🤑. And don't even get me started on the weirdness of having King James I make an appearance, that's just bizarre 😂. I guess what I'm saying is, if they wanted to do this story justice, they should've taken a more nuanced approach...

I was really hoping for something more from Coven... 🤔 I mean, the Pendle witch trials are such a dark chapter in history, but I feel like they deserved better than this watered-down adaptation. It's all over the place - one minute it's trying to tackle serious issues, and the next it's just being super cheesy 😂. The actors did try their best with the material they had, but sometimes you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, right? 🐖

omg i know what u mean! i saw this show last week and was soooo underwhelmed 🤔♀️ it's like they took all these fascinating historical themes and just... dumbed them down 🙄 and the acting is great but it's not enough to save this messy script from itself 🚮 king james i would never underestimate the power of a good wig 😂💇‍♀️

I gotta say I was really hyped for Coven Review at first, but after watching it, I feel like it's all over the place 🤯. The actors are super talented, don't get me wrong, but the script is just so...heavy-handed, you know? It's like they're trying to cram too many ideas into one show and it ends up feeling really shallow 💔. And can we talk about how they portrayed Jenet's childhood self? I mean, a puppet?! 🤡 That feels like such a lazy cop-out. I was hoping for something more nuanced and thoughtful, but instead it just feels like a weird mishmash of ideas 🎉. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I think Coven Review has some real potential, but it needs to tighten up its act 🔔.

🤔 I mean, it's defo disappointing that a show about these powerful women gets watered down like that... I get what they're trying to do, highlighting the wronged women of the pendle witch trials, but the execution is just so messy. Simplistic messages and broad comedy scenes just don't cut it for me 🙅‍♀️. The talented cast deserves better than a script that relies on heavy-handed storytelling and awkward cameos from historical figures 🤦‍♂️. It's like they're trying to make a point, but the way they're doing it is more cringeworthy than thought-provoking 😐. Maybe with some rework, this show could've been something special... as it stands, I'm just not invested 💔.

I was really hyped to see this musical adaptation of the Pendle witch trials but unfortunately it felt like they were trying too hard to be all about empowerment and historical revisionism without really getting into the nitty gritty details. I mean, I love a good 'rock musical' as much as the next person 🤟♀️, but this one just didn't quite hit the mark for me. The pacing was all over the place, some scenes were super funny while others felt like they dragged on forever. And don't even get me started on King James I's cameo lol what was that all about?!

omg i saw this musical coven and i was like "girl power" 🤩 but then i realized it was all just a mess 🤯 like what's up with the pacing? one sec you're crying about oppression and the next u're laughing at some dude in a ruff collar 😂👴 & can we talk about how simplified the messages are? like where's the depth? 🤔 i get that it's trying to bring attention to the wronged women but come on, can't we do better than just singing about empowerment 🎶🙄

I'm thoroughly underwhelmed by Coven's attempt to reimagine the Pendle witch trials – it feels like a shallow exercise in checking boxes rather than a genuine exploration of the historical context 🤔. The show's reliance on broad comedic scenes and simplistic messages about empowerment comes across as heavy-handed and lacking in nuance, which ultimately undermines its attempts to tackle complex themes like child coercion and patriarchal oppression 🙅‍♀️. The casting is undoubtedly talented, but even they can't elevate this mess of a script to something greater 😐. I'm all for reimagining historical events through theatre, but Coven's execution feels haphazard and lacking in subtlety – a true disappointment from a production that promised so much 🎭💔

I just saw this review for Coven Review and I gotta say, it's a total letdown 😐 The idea of bringing attention to those wronged women at the Pendle witch trials is cool, but the execution is so messy 🤯. They gotta work on fleshing out those characters instead of relying on cartoonish traits. And what's up with all these simplistic messages? It feels like they're trying too hard to be "empowering" without actually delivering anything substantial 💁‍♀️. King James I as a character is just cringeworthy 🙄.

😐 I'm not buying it. The reviewer seems to be having a bit of a tantrum about Coven Review 😒. They're going all out on the production's supposed shortcomings without actually providing any concrete evidence to back up their claims 🤔.

I mean, come on, how can you say the show's pacing is "erratic" when you haven't even seen it yourself? Have they talked to the director or anyone involved in the production? The reviewer just assumes they know what's going on behind the scenes 👀.

And what's with all these vague criticisms about "cartoonish characters" and "simplistic messages"? Can we get some actual details here? I'd love to see some specific examples from the show 📚. Until then, this review feels like a rant rather than a thoughtful critique 💬.

ugh i feel like they got it all wrong about the pendle witch trials 😩 i mean cant they see that it was more than just some poor girls being persecuted by the church? there were whole communities of women who were targeted and killed... its not just a simple story of empowerment, its so much more complex than that 🤯

I just saw this thread and I gotta say, I was really disappointed with Coven Review 🤔. I loved the Pendle witch trials story, but it sounds like they didn't do it justice. I mean, a musical can be fun and all, but if it's just gonna phone it in with shallow messages about empowerment... what's the point? And don't even get me started on King James I's cameo 🙄, that was just cringeworthy. The only thing that would've saved this show for me is if they'd taken their time to really develop the characters and the story, you know? Just a hasty attempt at making a big statement about history... no thanks 😒

I feel for the talented ensemble cast - they deserve so much better than a messy script like this 🤕. It's like the show is trying to make a point about historical injustices but ends up being more cringeworthy than thought-provoking 😳. The thing is, life isn't always neat and tidy like that... we gotta deal with complexity and messiness sometimes 💔. Maybe next time, take a step back, breathe, and let the story unfold naturally 🌱?

I was really excited to see this musical about the Pendle witch trials, but honestly it felt like they took some cool ideas and mashed them together with a bunch of lazy writing 🤷‍♀️. The cast is super talented, especially Gabrielle Brooks as Jenet - she's got range for days 💁‍♀️! But the show just didn't know what it wanted to say, or how to say it in a way that felt authentic. It felt like they were trying too hard to tackle big themes but ended up coming across all shallow 🤥. I mean, come on, a birth scene with a saccharine song about Mother Earth? 🤮 yeah no thanks. The pacing was all over the place and some of the humor just fell flat 😂. Overall, it felt like they had some great ingredients but didn't know how to mix them together into something cohesive 🍲

I mean I know the show's trying to tackle some big themes but it just feels like they're hammering home the message instead of letting it breathe 🤔... like, I get that you wanna bring attention to those poor women who got railroaded by the church but can't we do this with a bit more nuance? And what's up with all these cartoon characters? It feels like they're trying too hard to be edgy or whatever 😒... and don't even get me started on the "puppet" thing 🎭... just felt really shallow. I mean, I love Gabrielle Brooks as Jenet but she deserves better than this script, you know? 🤷‍♀️
