Cowboys fire former Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who lasts 1 season as defensive coordinator

Cowboys Part Ways with Former Bears Coach Matt Eberflus After Foul Start

The Dallas Cowboys have fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus just one season into his tenure, a move that leaves many wondering what went wrong. The team's defense allowed the most points in the league this season, a far cry from the expectations of a star-studded unit.

Eberflus, who was hired by new head coach Brian Schottenheimer after emerging as a candidate for several other teams following his midseason ouster as Bears coach in 2024, was touted by owner Jerry Jones as "a great young man with tremendous character." However, when asked if Eberflus was the right man for the job, Jones diplomatically said, "It's clear that a change is needed."

This latest demotion marks the fourth defensive coordinator to leave the Cowboys in four seasons. The team's decision to trade away superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons before the season even started likely set Eberflus up for failure.

Eberflus's tenure with the Bears, which lasted a full season after he was brought back as coach at midseason following a 14-32 record, was marked by inconsistency on defense. He struggled to get his unit to perform, ranking them as lowly as 29th in the league during one of his three seasons.

At 55 years old, Eberflus's options are now limited. With a coaching career spanning over two decades, he may be forced to start anew as a position coach or take on a coordinator job at the collegiate level. After stints at Toledo and Missouri early in his career, Eberflus worked his way up through the ranks, eventually landing an NFL coaching gig with the Browns as linebackers coach in 2009.

๐Ÿค• Cowboys just proved they're really bad at hiring coaches ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, who lets a guy go after one season? They were expecting him to fix their defense but it got worse under his watch ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. And now he's stuck with limited options at 55... poor guy's gonna have to start over from scratch ๐Ÿšซ. Another coaching carousel to add to the list of NFL woes ๐Ÿ˜’

I gotta say, I'm not surprised about Matt Eberflus getting the axe after just one season. I mean, he was a mid-season change at Bears and they still sucked ๐Ÿ˜’. And trading away Micah Parsons before the season even started? That's like throwing a rookie QB into the fire without any practice ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The Cowboys thought they could magic up a good defense just by hiring him? Come on, Jerry ๐Ÿ‘Ž. Four defensive coordinators in four seasons? That's not a winning formula ๐Ÿ”ด.

I think Eberflus has some great qualities as a coach, but the system isn't right for him ๐Ÿ’”. And now he's 55 and gotta start all over again? That's a tough road ahead ๐Ÿš—. Maybe he should've taken that Toledo gig back in the day instead of chasing the NFL dream ๐Ÿˆ. Anyways, I'm not shedding any tears for the guy...

idk wut happened ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ! cowboys just fired matt eberflus after like one season?! didnt they think he was gonna turn it around?? i mean, ur not expected to win the super bowl every year lol. i guess jerry jones was right tho, a change is def needed. btw, micah parsons trade was a huge mistake ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. eberflus had some good moments w/ bears but consistency was key. now hes gonna have to start all over again ๐Ÿ˜”. maybe he can get back into the game as a position coach or something?

omg what's going on with this dallas cowboys team ๐Ÿคฏ they just fired their defensive coordinator matt eberflus like what even happened?! i feel bad for the guy though he got a pretty good intro from jerry jones saying he's a "great young man with tremendous character" ๐Ÿ˜Š but it looks like that wasn't enough to save him. i wonder if micah parsons trade was the final nail in his coffin ๐Ÿค” did they really think trading away their star pass rusher would set eberflus up for failure? and now he's gotta start all over again... maybe a position coach or college level gig? that's like, 2 decades of coaching experience just going down the drain ๐Ÿ˜ข

omg u guys, what's goin on w/ cowboys defense?! they got rid of matt eberflus like 1 season in & it's a total fail ๐Ÿคฏ i mean, i was hyped when jerry jones said he was "great young man with tremendous character" but idk, maybe that was just a marketing move lol. anywayz, now eberflus is basically done w/ nfl, i feel bad 4 him tho... 55 & nothin' to show ๐Ÿค•

I'm shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฎ that the Cowboys parted ways with Matt Eberflus so soon after hiring him! It's like they said one thing during the interview process and another once he started working out there ๐Ÿค”. I mean, the team's defense was totally crushed this season, giving up more points than anyone else... it's just not acceptable ๐Ÿ’”.

And yeah, the trade of Micah Parsons before even a single game did seem like a huge risk ๐Ÿค‘. It's one thing to make trades that don't work out, but to give away a super star before they even get a chance? That's some crazy math ๐Ÿ“Š.

It's gonna be tough for Eberflus now, he's 55 and his options are kinda limited ๐Ÿคž. I feel bad for him, because at the end of the day, he's just trying to do his job and help out an NFL team ๐Ÿ™.

๐Ÿ˜” I feel bad for Matt Eberflus, he was really given a tough hand from the start. Like, they trade away their best pass rusher and then bring him in as DC? It's not his fault that things didn't work out ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. He's got a lot of experience under his belt, I mean 20+ years in coaching, so you'd think he'd have a better shot at making it work ๐Ÿ’ช. The Cowboys just gotta shake off the whole thing and find someone new to lead their defense ๐Ÿ”„. Maybe Eberflus can use this as an opportunity to start fresh, like coach at a college level or something ๐Ÿ“š. He's still 55, so he's got plenty of life left in him ๐Ÿ’•.

I think the Cowboys are really struggling to find their defensive identity, it's like they're playing catch-up ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Matt Eberflus was a decent coach, but I guess he just wasn't the right fit for this team #NotMyCoach. The trade of Micah Parsons was a major blunder and put so much pressure on their D to perform, it's no wonder they got embarrassed all season ๐Ÿคฏ. At least Eberflus is taking this one in the stride, he'll bounce back, maybe even find a new gig #BounceBackLikeEberflus. The NFL is just so competitive now, it's hard for any team to stick with their coaching staff long-term ๐Ÿˆ.

the cowboys are having a tough time finding stability on defense ๐Ÿค”... it's like they're trying to juggle too many balls and can't keep any of them upright ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ‘Ž but u feel for matt eberflus, the guy's been around the block a few times and deserves a chance to prove himself again ๐Ÿ’ผ... maybe it's time for him to take on a role that doesn't require him to be in charge of an entire unit? position coaching could be his best shot ๐Ÿ”„

man this is crazy, can't believe they parted ways with eberflus so soon ๐Ÿคฏ he was only supposed to be there for one season and already they're changing him up again lol like what did he even do wrong? 29th in the league defense is not okay for a team with all those superstars on their squad, seems like jones is all over the place now ๐Ÿ˜‚ maybe it's time for schottenheimer to take some responsibility for this mess ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I was watching that new Netflix series about a dude who travels the world on a bike and it's so inspiring ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, can you imagine just hitting the open road and seeing where life takes you? It's like, what's holding us back from doing the same thing with our careers? Eberflus was supposed to be the guy to turn around that Cowboys defense but it looks like he just didn't have the right recipe ๐Ÿด. Maybe he should've stuck to coaching high school or something ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Anyway, I'm gonna go cook some pasta for dinner, I'm craving spaghetti ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Umm... I think the Cowboys made the right call ๐Ÿค”... but wait, no they didn't ๐Ÿ˜‚... I mean, how can you fire someone after just one season? That's kinda harsh ๐Ÿค•... on the other hand, it's not like Eberflus had a stellar track record at the Bears either ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ... I'm sure he was just misunderstood by Jones and company ๐Ÿค‘... but, at the same time, that trade for Micah Parsons might've been a total bust ๐Ÿšซ... and what's up with all these defensive coordinators leaving in the last few seasons? That's gotta be some kinda pattern or something ๐Ÿ”€... I'm all confused now ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿค” I don't think it's entirely surprising that the Cowboys parted ways with Matt Eberflus, to be honest ๐Ÿ˜. The team was expected to have a top-notch defense, but it just didn't pan out ๐Ÿ“‰. And let's be real, trading away Micah Parsons before the season even started is like setting yourself up for failure ๐Ÿ’”. Maybe they thought they were getting a good deal, but it looks like it backfired big time ๐Ÿ˜‚. I feel bad for Eberflus though, he was given a lot of credit and then didn't deliver ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's gonna be tough for him to find another job in the NFL now ๐Ÿ‘Ž. He's definitely got some experience under his belt tho, which is more than most coaches can say ๐Ÿ™.

๐Ÿค” u know i was just thinking about how fleeting success is in life? like matt eberflus had this golden opportunity to take over as defensive coordinator for the cowboys but it just didn't work out... and now he's gotta start from scratch again. its crazy how one season can make all the difference between being a top coach and just another has-been trying to get back in ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’” what does that say about our society? we're always chasing the next big thing, but are we really prepared for when it slips away?

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’ก I'm like totally confused about this move by the Cowboys... one season into it and they're already saying Matt Eberflus isn't doing well? ๐Ÿค” The guy's got experience, he was a midseason hire as Bears coach last year and stuff worked out okay-ish. ๐Ÿ™ƒ I mean what did they expect from him? That he'd magically turn the team's defense into a machine overnight? ๐Ÿ’ฅ It just doesn't add up...

I'm shocked the Cowboys didn't give Matt Eberflus more time to turn things around... ๐Ÿค” I think it's a classic case of "too little, too late" and a symptom of the team's chaotic leadership structure under Jerry Jones ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that they traded away Micah Parsons before the season even started says it all - they were setting themselves up for failure from the get-go ๐Ÿšซ.

It's like the Cowboys are stuck in a never-ending cycle of mediocrity, and Eberflus is just the latest casualty ๐Ÿค•. I mean, what's next? Will they try to pawn off another coach on Brian Schottenheimer and hope for the best? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The fact that this team can't seem to get it right with top talent like Parsons at their disposal is a bigger concern than Eberflus's tenure... ๐Ÿ‘€

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ... I'm so surprised the Cowboys parted ways with Matt Eberflus already ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, they were expecting a top-notch defense from him, but it's clear that he just wasn't getting it done ๐Ÿ’”. The fact that their D allowed the most points in the league this season is pretty damning ๐Ÿ”ฅ. And let's not forget, they traded away one of their best players in Micah Parsons before even starting the season ๐Ÿค‘... it's like they didn't even give Eberflus a shot ๐Ÿ˜.

I think what really killed Eberflus was his tenure with the Bears ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, he had some success early on, but then things just fell apart ๐Ÿ‘Ž. He struggled to get his unit consistent and it's clear that he wasn't equipped to handle the big leagues ๐Ÿ’ช.

At this point, Eberflus is 55 years old and his options are pretty limited ๐Ÿค”... unless he wants to take a step back and become a position coach or something, I'm not sure what else is left for him ๐Ÿ“š. He's had an amazing coaching career so far, but it looks like this might be the end of the road for him ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿค” I feel bad for Matt Eberflus, he's been around the block a few times and has some great experience under his belt ๐Ÿ“š. But, gotta agree with Jerry Jones on this one, it is clear that change was needed ๐Ÿ”„. The Cowboys' defense being the worst in the league is just crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I think the trade of Micah Parsons was a huge mistake too ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ, that guy would've made a huge difference.

As for Eberflus, 55 and still got some great coaching left in him ๐Ÿ™Œ. Maybe he'll find his way to a different team or level, like a college coach ๐Ÿˆ. I hope the next DC brings some stability and consistency to the defense ๐Ÿ’ช. The Cowboys' fans deserve better ๐Ÿ‘
