CPD officer shootings outpace last year's total after cop fatally shoots man in West Ridge

Chicago Police Department officers have exceeded their yearly shooting quota after fatally shooting a 20-year-old man in West Ridge during a stolen vehicle investigation on Tuesday night.

According to data from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, this year's police shootings are already surpassing last year's total of 12. At least nine of those incidents were fatal, with six reported fatalities last year.

The latest shooting occurred in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, where officers discovered a stolen BMW parked on the street. When two men from a dark car approached the vehicle, one of them attempted to flee and was dragged by police. The officer involved fired his gun once, striking the 20-year-old man in the head and causing the car to crash into a parked vehicle.

The young man was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, while another woman in the vehicle was taken into custody. Two guns were recovered from the scene, and an officer suffered minor injuries but was released from hospital treatment.

Residents in the area described the incident as unusual and said they had never heard of a shooting occurring on their street before. "I've never heard a gunshot here," said Evan D., who lives nearby. "It felt a little weird, but I still felt safe."

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the specifics of the shooting, while police involved have been placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.

A separate incident occurred in Morgan Park early Sunday, where a man arguing with his neighbor shot an officer and another officer returned fire. The man, identified as Darren Brewster, was later taken into custody after being charged with multiple counts related to the incident, including attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." - George Santayana ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿšจ 2025 is already showing us that we're still repeating patterns of violence and mistrust between law enforcement and communities. We need to take a step back, listen to each other's concerns, and work towards building trust and understanding before things escalate further. ๐Ÿ˜•

ugh this is like such a disturbing trend in chicago... people are getting killed left & right by cops and no one seems to be doing anything about it ๐Ÿค• i mean what even is the quota for these guys? are they just trying to meet some sort of twisted target or something? i know police work can be super tough but this is just senseless violence. and meanwhile, innocent ppl like that 20 yr old guy who was just driving down the street with his girl get caught up in it all and it ends so tragically ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿค” I find it concerning that the Chicago Police Department's shooting quota has been exceeded this year already, especially given the alarming trend of police shootings in the US ๐Ÿšจ. The fact that a 20-year-old man was fatally shot during a stolen vehicle investigation raises questions about the efficacy and morality of such tactics ๐Ÿ’ฅ. It's also disconcerting that residents in the area described the incident as unusual and said they had never heard a gunshot before, highlighting the potential for police actions to be perceived as excessive or unjustified ๐ŸŒŽ. The need for greater accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies is crucial in addressing these concerns ๐Ÿ’ก.

OMG, can't believe what's going on in Chicago right now ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, 12 police shootings already this year? That's insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ. And to make matters worse, it's like they're exceeding their quota โฑ๏ธ. What's going on with all these incidents?! It feels like something needs to be done ASAP ๐Ÿ’จ.

I'm really worried about the residents of West Ridge who witnessed this brutal event ๐Ÿ˜“. I can only imagine how traumatic that must have been for them. And poor Evan D. who lives nearby, he's still trying to process what happened ๐Ÿค”.

This incident is definitely a wake-up call for Chicago, and we need to start having some serious conversations about police accountability ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The fact that the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating this further is a good step in the right direction ๐Ÿ™. We need to make sure our officers are held to high standards ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

And can we talk about how two separate incidents happened in one weekend?! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ One shooting and another officer-involved shooting? It's just too much ๐Ÿคฏ. We need more than just routine administrative duties for the officers involved โ€“ we need real change ๐Ÿ”“!

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’” This is just too much. Another innocent life lost due to overzealous policing. I mean, 12 shootings in one year already? That's crazy! And it's not like they're even making progress on reducing crime or anything. It feels like they're just escalating the situation.

And what really gets me is that this happened right here in our own community. People are living in fear of their own police officers. I know some people might say "well, it's not the cops' fault" but come on, they have to take responsibility for their actions. 30 days on administrative duties? That's just a slap on the wrist.

We need real change, not just empty promises. We need to rethink our approach to law enforcement and make sure that we're protecting both our citizens and our officers, not just one at a time ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜‚ can u believe this city is like a real-life video game? 1 guy gets dragged by cops & BAM! another guy's head gets shot off on the same night... ๐Ÿคฏ Chicago police are really testing their "yearly quota" now, aren't they? ๐Ÿค‘ 12 shootings last year was bad enough, but I guess you need some extra ammo to meet those targets ๐Ÿ˜‚. Anyways, hope the dead kid's family gets some answers soon & not just a bunch of bureaucratic red tape ๐Ÿšฎ. By the way, has anyone seen that "routine administrative duties" joke getting old? ๐Ÿ™„

this is getting outta hand lol ๐Ÿคฏ. 20 year old kid dead over a stolen car? seems like police are just making quotas they dont need to be shooting people over that kinda thing its like theyre more worried about numbers than actual crime prevention. and another incident where some dude shoots an officer and they shoot back? what is wrong with these ppl ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. idk how much more of this i can take, it feels like every day theres a new shooting or some crazy police drama

๐Ÿค” this is getting outta control... 20yo goes down in a shoot-out over a stolen car & it's like business as usual for these officers... no accountability ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ฃ yet another day, more lives lost, more families torn apart... can we get some facts here? What exactly does "routine administrative duties" mean? Is this just a slap on the wrist or actual consequences? ๐Ÿ’ช

Ugh, this is so concerning ๐Ÿค•. A 20-year-old just got shot and killed in front of his car while trying to flee from police. Like, what even happened here? ๐Ÿค” The police had a stolen car, but they didn't have to shoot anyone. And now we're hearing about another incident where some guy shot an officer, and it's just getting out of hand ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

I'm all for keeping the streets safe, but can't we find a way to do that without killing people? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ It seems like police are shooting more often than they used to, and it's not looking good. And now there's this woman who was in the car with him... what about her? Was she even in danger or something?

I don't know how much more of this we can take. We need some real answers here, and we need them fast ๐Ÿ•’. Maybe we can start by looking at the policies that are supposed to keep our communities safe, but aren't really doing so.

.. another shooting in Chicago ๐Ÿ˜”. I'm not surprised it happened this way though, we know there's still work to be done when it comes to police accountability. These stats from last year are crazy - 12 shootings already? ๐Ÿคฏ And the fact that 9 were fatal is just heartbreaking.

At the same time, I think it's good that the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is on top of this. It's a step in the right direction for transparency and making sure that these incidents get properly investigated. The police department needs to prioritize de-escalation techniques and community building over just getting numbers up. We can't keep relying on force as our first option, it's gotta be about finding those solutions.

The fact that the victim was only 20 is just devastating ๐Ÿค•. I hope his family gets the support they need right now.
