David Copperfield review – Dickens distilled into an inventive three-hander

David Copperfield proves that even with a three-person cast, Charles Dickens' beloved classic can still pack a punch.

Abigail Pickard Price's inventive adaptation, performed by Luke Barton, Louise Beresford, and Eddy Payne for the Guildford Shakespeare Company, whittles down the dense narrative into an engaging and witty spectacle. The three actors perform with impressive range, delivering nuanced portrayals of David's journey through misfortune, love, and loss.

The production boasts clever stage transformations, such as a swivel of suitcases to evoke David's travels to Yarmouth, where he meets Emily, Ham, and Co. The use of props and costumes adds to the production's visual charm, particularly in its representation of David's stepfather, Edward Murdstone, who is convincingly conveyed through a hat and coat puppet.

While some plot points are omitted or minor characters are absent, the show remarkably juggles Dickens' sprawling narrative and memorable cast with ease. The chemistry between the three leads is undeniable, with Payne delivering a compelling performance as David, Barton bringing excellent comedic timing to his transformations, and Beresford captivating audiences as she navigates David's complex relationships.

The production's lighthearted and comedic tone is reminiscent of Armando Iannucci's style, although it occasionally feels frenetic. Nevertheless, the show's zesty energy and visual flair make it a delightful way to kick off the holiday season.

Ultimately, David Copperfield proves that Dickens' timeless tale can still cast its magic on stage with three talented actors.

I just watched this adaptation of David Copperfield and I gotta say, they did an amazing job condensing the story into a super engaging show 🤩 The three leads really brought out their characters and had great chemistry together. I loved how they incorporated clever stage transformations and props to make it feel like the story was unfolding before my eyes 🔮 The only thing that bugged me was how some plot points were cut or minor characters were missing, but overall the show still managed to pack a punch 🥊 It felt really lighthearted and fun, like Armando Iannucci's style, which is always a win in my book 😄

🎭 David Copperfield is totally bringing the house down at the moment! I mean, I've seen some impressive adaptations of Charles Dickens' works in the past, but this one by Abigail Pickard Price for the Guildford Shakespeare Company takes the cake 🍰. With a three-person cast, it's amazing to see how they managed to whittle down the dense narrative and still deliver an engaging and witty spectacle. The stage transformations are super clever too - who knew suitcases could be so entertaining 😂. I do think some plot points were missing, but overall it's a delightful way to kick off the holiday season. And can we talk about the chemistry between Luke Barton, Louise Beresford, and Eddy Payne? 💕 It's clear they're all talented actors who brought their A-game to this production 🎬

🤔 I think what really worked here was condensing the narrative down to focus on the core of David's journey and relationships. Three actors tackling a dense book would've been tough, but this adaptation found a great balance between storytelling and humor. Luke, Louise & Eddy are all super talented! 👏 The way they moved around that stage with those clever transformations was genius, added so much to the show. A few minor characters were MIA but honestly, I think that helped keep things moving at a nice clip. Overall, it sounds like a really fun and engaging show - perfect for the holiday season! 🎄

I just saw this production of David Copperfield and I gotta say, it was super fun! The three actors did an amazing job bringing the story to life, especially considering how many characters there are in the book 🤯. They had some clever ways of doing things like stage transformations that really added to the show. It was a bit frenetic at times but overall it felt like a great holiday treat 🎄. I'm not sure what they cut from the story but it didn't seem to hurt the pacing too much. The chemistry between the leads was spot on, especially Eddy Payne as David - he had some great moments! 👏 All in all, I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you're a fan of Dickens or just looking for something lighthearted before Christmas 🎅

Lol what a feat! I mean, three people playing like five characters? Genius! The casting is spot on, especially Payne as David, Barton's comedic timing had me dying over there 😂, and Beresford totally brought the drama. I loved how they simplified the story without losing the essence of it - some minor characters were gone, but we still got the core emotions, right? It's not perfect (I mean, some plot points are missing), but overall it was a super fun show! The stage transformations were so cool too 🤩...

omg i just saw this play with my squad and it was SO GOOD!!! 😍 david copperfield is def one of the best books ever written but sometimes it feels like too much to take in...this adaptation was a game changer for me, they made it so relatable and funny! i loved how they used costumes and props to bring the characters to life 🤣 especially edward murdstone's hat puppet 😂🎩 my fave part was when david meets emily, it was like watching a rom-com but with more drama 💔 and the three actors were all so talented, they really brought out the emotions of each character 🤗 did u catch any funny moments?

🤩 finally saw this adaptation and I'm impressed. The hat puppet for Murdstone was so underrated 🤣! The chemistry between the leads is real, Payne's David had some great moments, felt like he went through a whole range of emotions. Barton's comedic timing is always good to see 😂. And Beresford, she just owned her scenes, loved how they didn't shy away from his emotional journey 🌟.

I'm loving this adaptation of David Copperfield! The use of a three-person cast is genius, it's like they've taken all the different characters and storylines and condensed them into this super engaging show. I mean, how the heck do you condense all that drama and romance into 2 hours? Luke Barton, Louise Beresford, and Eddy Payne are just amazing as David, Emily, and Murdstone respectively 🤩. And the stage transformations are so clever, it's like stepping into the story! I was a bit worried they'd lose some of the plot points or characters, but they actually did an incredible job of juggling everything. The chemistry between the three leads is electric 😍, especially with Eddy Payne bringing that extra layer to David's character. And can we talk about how cool the hat and coat puppet for Murdstone is? 😎

🤔 I love how this adaptation of David Copperfield managed to simplify the complex narrative while maintaining its wit and charm 🎭. The use of clever stage transformations and props really brought the story to life. It's not perfect, but omitting some plot points is a small price to pay for an enjoyable experience. 🙃 The cast did a great job conveying the emotions and relationships between the characters, especially Eddy Payne as David, he nailed the emotional journey! 👍

I was literally blown away by this production of David Copperfield!!! I mean, I've seen some impressive adaptations in my time, but this one takes the cake! The way they whittled down all that dense narrative to make it engaging and witty is pure genius 🤯💡 Luke Barton, Louise Beresford, and Eddy Payne are absolute stars, each bringing their own unique energy to the roles. I love how they didn't try to cram every single character into the show - sometimes less is more, right? 😂 The stage transformations were seriously mind-blowing, I was fully transported into David's world! And can we talk about that hat and coat puppet for a second? 🤣 It's such a simple prop, but it totally sells the character of Edward Murdstone. Overall, this production is a must-see, especially during the holiday season when you need something to lift your spirits ☀️🎄
