Deeper review – extreme cave diving documentary offers drama but lacks a little oomph

For fans of high-stakes adventures, Jennifer Peedom's latest documentary Deeper offers a thrilling glimpse into the world of extreme cave diving. The film follows a team of divers, including Richard Harris, one of the heroes of the Thailand cave rescue, as they embark on an expedition to explore New Zealand's Pearse Resurgence cave system.

While Deeper is undoubtedly entertaining and well-made, it falls short of truly capturing the essence of what drives these brave individuals to take on such daunting challenges. Harris himself describes himself as "definitely not a brave man," emphasizing that this isn't about recklessness or a desire for thrills – but rather a profound sense of purpose.

The team's goal is ambitious: using hydrogen as a breathing gas, they aim to push the boundaries of what's thought possible in deep diving. This decision leads to a dramatic and perilous journey, which serves as the film's emotional core. However, without revealing too much, it's impossible not to feel a sense of disappointment that we're never shown anything truly catastrophic or heart-stopping.

One of the main issues with Deeper is its lack of oomph – a term I'll use to describe the visceral thrill and tension that usually accompanies high-risk endeavors. This isn't due to any fault of Peedom's; she's a classy documentarian who avoids manufacturing drama for narrative convenience. Instead, it's simply that deep diving itself isn't visually electrifying in the same way as climbing Everest or navigating treacherous mountains.

The film's spatial focus is indeed an interesting reversal – instead of pointing upwards towards the clouds, Deeper descends into the depths of the Earth's crust. While there are some stunning drone shots of New Zealand's wilderness, much of the film is spent in the dark confines of a cave, where visual excitement is limited.

Still, Deeper remains a compelling watch, particularly for those who find themselves enthralled by tales of adventure and risk-taking. Even if it doesn't shatter expectations or push boundaries, the film offers an intriguing look into a world that's both fascinating and terrifying. As Harris says in one interview, "This is it, the moment of truth." While we don't get to experience the full force of this tension on screen, it's undeniable that Deeper captures a sense of adventure – and for many viewers, that's all that matters.

As Deeper hits Australian cinemas from October 30th, fans of Peedom's previous work will undoubtedly be eager to dive in (pun intended). Whether or not the film resonates with outsiders remains to be seen, but one thing's certain: this is a story about courage, camaraderie, and the unrelenting pursuit of human potential.

I just watched Deeper and I gotta say, it's like they took all the excitement outta cave diving 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Jennifer Peedom's a talented docu-maker, but this film feels kinda... tame. I mean, where's the heart-pumping action? The team's goal sounds crazy ambitious, but the payoff's just so... understated. The lack of oomph is really noticeable - it's like they're trying to be classy and subtle instead of, you know, thrilling us outta our seats 😐.

And don't even get me started on how boring some parts are 📹. I mean, we spend most of the film stuck in dark caves, just chillin' with nothing much happening... it's like watching paint dry 🔩. Don't get me wrong, there are some sick drone shots of New Zealand's wilderness, but they can't make up for the overall lackluster experience.

Still, I can see why fans of adventure stories would love this film 🎥. It's all about courage and human potential, which is pretty cool 🙏. Just don't expect it to blow your mind or anything 😅. If you're a fan of Peedom or just wanna check out some crazy cave diving vids, Deeper might be worth a watch... but for the love of adventure, folks, bring the heat 🔥!

I mean... Deeper just didn't blow me away 😐 I get what the filmmakers are trying to do, showcasing these crazy cave divers and their mission, but for me it felt kinda tame 🤔 don't get me wrong, Richard Harris is super cool and all, but I needed more of that heart-stopping moment where things go wrong, you know? They had some awesome drone shots tho, that New Zealand wilderness is straight fire 🔥. But like... the whole film just didn't feel as intense or thrilling as other docs I've seen. Maybe I'm just not the target audience, idk 🤷‍♀️ still gonna check it out tho, curious to see how Peedom captures this crazy world 🎬

I just saw Deeper and I gotta say, it's still super hyped me up! I mean, Richard Harris being in it made all the difference. He's so chill and down-to-earth, you can tell he's not into all that bravado stuff. I liked how the film showed the science and planning behind this crazy expedition - it was actually pretty fascinating.

I can see why they might've thought the visual excitement would be higher, but honestly, I loved the darkness of the cave scenes - it felt so immersive! And yeah, there weren't any heart-stopping moments that had me on the edge of my seat, but sometimes you just want to feel like you're right there with the divers.

Still, Deeper's got a vibe that's hard to shake off. Maybe it's just because I'm drawn to these kinds of stories about people pushing limits and trying new things. It's inspiring in its own way. Can't wait for my turn to go cave diving 🤯🌊

I'm not really feeling Deeper 🤔... I mean, it's got all the right stuff - thrilling team effort, groundbreaking science, and some epic cave diving 🌊💦 But for me, it's a bit of a snooze fest 😴. The stats don't lie: 75% of documentaries about extreme sports can be summed up as "thrilling" but lack substance 📊. And Deeper is no exception.

Here are some mind-blowing stats:

* 92% of cave diving fatalities occur due to equipment failure 💀
* The average air supply for a deep dive is just 30-40 minutes ⏰
* 9 out of 10 cave divers experience some level of anxiety before each dive 😬

Now, if we're talking about the visuals:

* Average frame rate in action documentaries: 24fps 📺
* Average drone shot duration: 2-3 seconds 🕳️
* Most thrilling part of Deeper: a 7-second drone shot of Richard Harris doing a gentle swim 💨

Don't get me wrong, Peedom's still got skills 👏. But when it comes to high-stakes adventure flicks, I need more... like at least 4x the number of close calls and near-misses 🤯

Im feeling kinda underwhelmed by Deeper, ya know? I mean, I love Jennifer Peedom's work and all, but this doco just doesn't quite have that edge. It's like, I get it, deep diving is cool and all, but it's not exactly the most visually stunning stuff. And yeah, I was kinda hoping for some major thrills or close calls, but it feels like we're just getting a glimpse of the calm before the storm. Still, I think it's a solid watch if you're into that sorta thing – the team's determination and camaraderie is genuinely inspiring 🤩

I'm kinda disappointed that we don't get to see any major incidents in this docu... I mean, Deeper does sound super intense! Using hydrogen as breathing gas is crazy talk 🤯 and pushing those limits sounds like it's gotta be pretty exhilarating. But at the same time, I can understand why the filmmakers might've wanted to avoid manufacturing drama - we don't need a Hollywood-style blockbuster vibe in a documentary, right? Still, I'm intrigued by the idea of exploring deep diving and I'd love to see some more visuals on that front... maybe they'll release some behind-the-scenes content or something 📹

omg yooo!! 🤯 Deeper is like totally hyped and all but i feel u on it not being super thriller tho 😐 its defo entertaining and peedom is like a total pro at what she does but maybe the lack of drama kinda makes it less exciting 💔 still wud watch 4 the docs on the cave diving lol 🤫 & thats so true about harris, courage isnt about bein brave its about doin wht needs 2 b done 💪 gotta check it out 🎥

I loved watching Deeper! 🤩 It was so inspiring to see those brave divers pushing their limits and exploring the unknown. I mean, who wouldn't want to dive into an alien world like that? 😲 The team's dedication to their goal is truly admirable, and it's amazing to see how they're using science to overcome challenges. I also loved the behind-the-scenes stuff - getting a glimpse into the lives of these thrill-seekers was really fascinating.

I have to agree with them that deep diving isn't exactly visually electrifying... but I think that's part of its appeal! It's not just about the visuals; it's about the sense of adventure and pushing boundaries. And let's be real, who needs explosions or car chases when you've got people literally exploring the darkest depths of the earth? 😂 Still, I do wish we'd gotten a bit more excitement out of the film... but overall, it was still an awesome watch! 👍

I don’t usually comment but I kinda get what the writer is saying 🤔. Like, yeah it’s not your average thrill ride film and you can tell they’re trying to capture something deeper (no pun intended) than just a crazy adventure story. But at the same time, I feel like the writer is being kinda harsh by saying it's lack of "oomph" is because deep diving isn't visually electrifying 🤷‍♀️. I mean, have you seen some of those cave dives? The darkness, the pressure, the danger... that's wild stuff 😲.

I don’t think Peedom did anything wrong as a documentarian; she just didn’t aim to make a film about explosions and high-speed chases or whatever 🙅‍♂️. She wanted to tell the story of these divers and their purpose, and I think she succeeded in that regard 💡. It's not a blockbuster action film, but it’s still an inspiring watch, you know? 😊
