'Designed for uncertainty': windbreakers are a hit in turbulent times

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made headlines recently when he attended a joint press conference with Denmark's leader wearing a glacial-blue windbreaker – an outer layer that has seen its share of resurgence in recent months. Nielsen, who regularly wears the windbreaker, wore it as a nod to Greenland's Arctic region, where the garment was originally designed for survival.

The windbreaker, also known as an anorak, traditionally made from intestinal membranes of marine mammals, was invented to help people cope with the harsh weather conditions in Greenland. Its modern design features make it not just a functional outer layer but a statement piece of fashion.

This resurgence has been fueled by popular culture, particularly the film Marty Supreme, which featured a windbreaker emblazoned with the title and three gold stars. The brand Nahmias, in collaboration with A24 and actor Timothée Chalamet's stylist Taylor McNeill, produced the jacket as part of their collection.

The windbreaker has become a staple on the streets, worn by celebrities such as Kendall and Kylie Jenner, American ballet dancer Misty Copeland, rapper Kid Cudi, and even Ringo Starr. Its appeal lies in its versatility – it can be dressed up or down, making it an ideal piece for everyday wear.

According to trend forecaster J'Nae Phillips, windbreakers "sit at a very specific emotional crossroads: practicality, nostalgia, and irony". They are perfect for the current climate, where people are dressing more broadly in adaptable, layerable, non-committal attire. The windbreaker's democratic, vaguely sporty style has become chic, acknowledging that life is unpredictable and often a bit damp.

Brands such as Zara, Damson Madder, Cos, and Ganni have taken note of the trend, offering their own versions of the windbreaker. K-Way, a Paris-founded brand, is leading the charge with its reimagined Le Vrai jacket, which has become a true lifestyle piece rather than just a technical one.

Damson Madder's take on windbreakers emphasizes soft colors, clean lines, and easy shapes, making them more approachable and less "gorpcore". The trend has taken hold, with windbreakers becoming a staple in many people's wardrobes.

Wow 💨! I love how this windbreaker is from Greenland and originally made for survival but now it's just super stylish 🙌! And who knew it'd be influenced by a movie like Marty Supreme? It's crazy how fashion trends can come from anywhere, right? The fact that it's become a staple in people's wardrobes is really interesting...and I'm loving the versatility of it – you can dress it up or down. Great to see more brands getting in on this trend too! 👕

I don’t usually comment but I gotta say, that whole windbreaker thing is kinda lit 💡. I mean, who wouldn't wanna rock a jacket made from intestinal membranes of marine mammals? It's like, totally ironic and nostalgic all at once 🤪. And the fact that it's become a staple in people's wardrobes is just wild 🔥. I'm loving how brands are taking note of the trend and putting their own spin on it 👗. Damson Madder's soft colors and clean lines are giving me life, tbh 😍. I'm not sure if I'd wear one myself (I mean, I'm good with a hoodie 🧶), but to each their own, right?

I'M LOVING THIS TRENDS FOR A WARM AND COZY FEEL WITHOUT BEING TOO FORMAL!!! IT'S LIKE THE WORLD IS SAYING WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH THE WEATHER ANYMORE 😂, SO LET'S JUST DRESS IN LAYERS AND CALL IT A DAY! GANNI AND ZARA ARE KILLING THIS GAME WITH THEIR WINDBREAKER COLLECTIONS 💖. I MEAN WHO DOESN'T WANT TO LOOK CHIC WHILE STaying WARM AND DRAGGY 🤣🌨️? THE BEST PART IS HOW DEMOCRATIC IT'S MADE US FEEL, LIKE WE CAN ALL ROCK A WINDBREAKER NO MATTER WHAT!

🤗 u r lovin dat glacial-blue windbreaker tho 🌊 it's like, the perfect layering piece 4 every occasion 😎 i no some ppl might think it's a bit ironic or nostalgic but honestly, who doesn't love a good anorak? 💕 it's not just about keeping warm in the Arctic, it's also about makin a statement with ur fashion choices 🌈 and honestly, the way it looks w/ a pair of distressed denim jeans is 🔥 i'm low-key obsessed w/ the latest K-Way collab too 👀

I gotta say, the resurgence of the anorak is giving me life 💨! I mean, who wouldn't want to stay warm and stylish in those harsh Arctic conditions? It's like the windbreaker has become this ultimate symbol of adaptability and practicality – you can dress it up or down and it's just so... versatile 😎. And can we talk about how cool is it that it's making a comeback? I remember my grandpa used to wear one back in the day, and now Kendall Jenner and Ringo Starr are rocking them on the streets! 🙌 It's like, the windbreaker has become this shared cultural thing – a way to acknowledge that life can be unpredictable and damp at times. And brands like K-Way and Damson Madder are really bringing their A-game with these new designs... I'm totally obsessed with my own new anorak now 🤩!

omg i just saw ringo starr wearing one of these anoraks on instagram 😂 i was like what is happening to 80 year olds 🤣 but then i thought about it and its kinda cool how the windbreaker has become this nostalgic thing that people are embracing for all the wrong reasons lol. i mean i have a pair in my closet too... i got them as a joke from timothée chalamet's stylist 👯‍♀️ anyone else wear one of these?

I gotta say, I'm kinda surprised to see windbreakers trending right now 🤔. Like, aren't they just for, you know, staying dry when it's snowing or something? But I guess it's not all about that anymore. I mean, some of these windbreakers are actually pretty stylish and stuff 💼. The fact that people like Kendall Jenner and Misty Copeland are wearing them on the streets is proof that fashion can be unpredictable 😂.

It's also cool to see how designers are putting their own spin on the trend. Like, Zara and Ganni have got some really cute versions of windbreakers 🤗. And I love that Damson Madder is making them more approachable with soft colors and clean lines 👌.

But what I think is even cooler is the nostalgia factor 💭. It's like people are embracing this retro vibe that they're not used to seeing in fashion. I mean, who wouldn't want to wear a windbreaker when you can just dress it up or down? 🤷‍♀️ It's all about layering and adaptability now.

All in all, I'm kinda stoked about the windbreaker trend 😎. Who knew something so practical could be so fashionable?

omg i'm so over here for this windbreaker trend!!! 💙🌊 it's like, the perfect combo of functionality and fashion - who needs just one thing that can do both? 😂 i mean, j'nae phillips said it best, "practicality, nostalgia, and irony" is def the vibe right now. and k-way's le vrai jacket is giving me LIFE 👗💕 the soft colors and clean lines from damson madder are so on point too - less gorpcore vibes 🙅‍♀️ i'm loving how it's become a staple in people's wardrobes, and celebs like misty copeland and kid cudi rocking them too 💁‍♀️👊

🤔 the windbreaker trend is so cool 🌪️! i love how it started as a practical piece for survival but now its all about fashion 🛍️. who knew it could be dressed up or down 👗? and yeah, nostalgia plays a big role in its appeal 📚. plus, its versatility is on point 🎯. brands like Zara and Cos are killing the game with their versions 🤑. damson madder's soft colors tho 🌸... i'm all about that aesthetic 💁‍♀️. and k-way's reimagined le vrai jacket is giving me life 😆!

I'm loving this anorak craze - it's all about that functional-meets-fashion vibe 💡! Jens-Frederik Nielsen's look is on point, and I can see why the windbreaker has become a staple for many fashionistas. The fact that it originated from marine mammals in Greenland adds a fascinating layer to its history 🐳. It's not just about staying warm; it's also about making a statement with your clothing.

The resurgence of this style is all about versatility - you can dress it up or down, and it works for anyone, regardless of age or background 👗👕. I'm intrigued by how brands like Zara and Damson Madder are reinterpreting the windbreaker, adding their own twist to the classic design 🤔. The fact that K-Way's Le Vrai jacket has become a lifestyle piece is no surprise - fashion is all about adapting to the climate (pun intended) 😎.

The trend forecaster J'Nae Phillips hits the nail on the head when she says windbreakers sit at "practicality, nostalgia, and irony" 📚. It's all about embracing the unpredictable nature of life with our clothing choices. As for me, I'm over here loving the democratic, sporty vibe of this trend - bring on the anoraks! 🌊

omg i just got the most iconic windbreaker from zara 🌟💨 it's literally so comfy and stylish at the same time! i was at the mall last weekend and saw misty copeland walking around with her windbreaker on, and i was like "that's my jam" 😍 now im wearing mine all the time, even to the grocery store 🤣 Jens-frederik nielsen might've invented it for survival, but i'm pretty sure its new purpose is just making life more stylish 💖
