Detroit crews battle 51 water main breaks as streets freeze - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's water main breaks have reached an unprecedented level, with 51 breaks reported across the city as bitter cold temperatures wreak havoc on the infrastructure. The deep freeze, which is expected to last another week or two, has turned streets into "frozen rivers," posing a significant threat to residents and drivers alike.

According to Gary Brown, director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, the situation is "historic" for the region. Crews are working around the clock to repair at least 20 breaks per day, with workers from the Department of Public Works assisting in clearing drains before repairs can begin. While most breaks are minor, the freezing temperatures have caused immediate damage on contact with pavement, creating hazardous ice sheets.

Residents in affected areas have reported being trapped by the flooding and ice-covered streets, including a nurse who was stuck in her vehicle for over an hour during her lunch break. Longtime resident Aaron Passmore described the conditions as "crazy" and expressed surprise at the severity of the incident, saying residents felt ignored.

The water main breaks come as Southeast Michigan battles a brutal cold snap, with wind chills well below zero prompting a cold weather advisory across the region. The extreme temperatures have forced hundreds of schools to close in recent days.

Detroit's water system spans over 2,700 miles of aging infrastructure, which is already under strain from prolonged cold spells. Recent winters have demonstrated how vulnerable this infrastructure can be, as seen in February 2025 when a large transmission main ruptured in southwest Detroit, flooding multiple blocks and impacting hundreds of residents.

As the repair work continues, city officials are urging residents to report any loss of water service so that cases can be addressed quickly. Crews will prioritize repairs that affect residential water service, and officials warned that the prolonged cold will continue to place stress on the system, increasing the likelihood of additional breaks in the days ahead.

πŸ€• my heart goes out to all those affected by this situation... can you even imagine being stuck in your car for over an hour because of flooded streets? 😱 it's just crazy to think that something like this can happen to our communities, especially when we know that the city is already struggling with aging infrastructure. 🀯 i hope the repair crews can get everything fixed as soon as possible so people don't have to go through that again. and what really gets me is how some residents are feeling like they're being ignored... it's essential for our leaders to listen to their concerns and provide support. πŸ’•

Ugh, I'm literally shivering just reading about this πŸ₯Ά Detroit's water main breaks are getting out of hand! 51 breaks? That's crazy talk! 😲 I can imagine being stuck in a car for an hour because of ice-covered streets... no thank you! ❄️ My grandma lives in the suburbs and she's been telling me how bad it is with all these cold snaps. It's like, we get it, winter's here, but not at this level, right? 😩

ugh man its like detroit isnt even ready for a lil snow winter is harshing things over there 51 water main breaks is crazy i feel bad for all those ppl stuck in their cars and whatnot gotta hope they get this all sorted out ASAP cant believe theres still 2700 miles of infrastructure that old thats just gross

😩 oh man, Detroit's water main breaks are getting crazy!!! 51 breaks already?!?! It's like they're trying to freeze the whole city πŸ˜‚. I feel bad for those people stuck in their cars or homes because of the flooding and ice 🌊. And it's not just them, the system as a whole is being really stressed out from these cold snaps. Like, 2,700 miles of aging infrastructure? That's a lot to deal with πŸ˜…. Can't we just have a warm winter for once?! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, not again πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Detroit's water main breaks are getting out of control, and I'm starting to feel like it's just a matter of when, not if, the whole city is going to be frozen solid. Like, I get it, the cold snap is intense, but come on, can't they prep for this stuff? 51 breaks in one week is just insane 🀯. And poor residents who are stuck in their cars or trapped by flooding... that's just cruel πŸ˜“. I mean, I've lived in cities with better infrastructure than Detroit, and it's clear they need to step up their game πŸ’ͺ.

omg this is crazy!! 🀯 detroit is going through so much right now! I'm keeping all my fingers crossed for the crews working day and night to get everything fixed ASAP πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ’§. It's just not fair that residents are stuck in their cars or even homes because of frozen streets 😩. i hope the city can get the funding it needs to upgrade that infrastructure soon πŸ€‘. the thought of 51 water main breaks is just too much πŸ’₯. everyone stay warm and safe out there 🌑️❀️

ugh this is crazy my cousin just told me he's been stuck on his main street for like an hour because it's frozen over 😩 i feel so bad for the people who lost water service i mean we've heard about this before with the transmission main rupture but it's still a nightmare how are they gonna fix all these breaks and get the system back online? πŸ€”

πŸš¨πŸ’§πŸ˜¬ this is getting outta hand! like, i get it, cold temps are brutal but 51 water main breaks in detroit? that's just insane 🀯. what's gonna happen when it gets even colder? we need some serious investment in that infrastructure ASAP πŸ’Έ. and seriously, how can they not prepare for this kinda thing? residents should be prepared too, like having a plan for if the water's out, you know? but yeah, this is just ridiculous πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.

Ugh, this is crazy! 🀯 Detroit's water main breaks are getting out of hand and I'm so worried about the people who live there. I mean, 51 breaks? That's just insane! The fact that crews can only fix like 20 a day is already stressing me out... what if it gets even worse?

I know they're saying it's historic for the region but honestly, it feels like this city has been warning signs about its infrastructure issues for years and nobody listened. I'm all for prioritizing repairs on residential water service, that's super reasonable, but come on! Can't we do better than 20 a day?

And poor Aaron Passmore just got stuck in his car for an hour? That's just ridiculous... residents feeling ignored is exactly what's going on here πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, who does that to their own people?! It's like, you're trying to fix the infrastructure but nobody seems to care about how it affects the actual people living there.

Can we please get some support for these workers? They're literally risking life and limb every time they go out to fix a break. And what about all the elderly folks who can't even leave their houses because of the flooding and ice?! This is just heartbreaking 😭.

🚨 This is a clear example of the consequences of neglecting our country's critical infrastructure 🀯. I mean, think about it, 2,700 miles of aging water mains and now we're facing unprecedented issues? It's like the system was built for failure 🚧. And what really gets me is that residents are feeling ignored, stuck in their homes because of ice-covered streets πŸ’§. It's like they're not being heard, not being prioritized πŸ—£οΈ. We need to start taking responsibility for our infrastructure and making sure it can withstand extreme weather conditions ❄️. The fact that the water main breaks come as a cold weather advisory is no coincidence - we're living in a world where climate change is real, and we need to adapt ⏰. This is not just about Detroit; it's about every city struggling with aging infrastructure πŸŒ†. We need to take action now, before more lives are disrupted by these kinds of disasters πŸ’”.

Ugh, this cold snap is taking its toll on our city πŸ₯ΆπŸš§ I've lived in Detroit for ages and I've never seen anything like this. The streets are basically frozen rivers and it's just not safe to drive or walk around. My grandma was stuck in her car for over an hour because of one of these breaks 😩. It's crazy that residents are feeling ignored, but I guess they're just tired of living with this broken infrastructure anyway. We need some serious investment in our water system ASAP πŸ’Έ. The fact that it's been happening more and more often is just a sign that we haven't been taking care of our city's needs for too long πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I'm hoping the repairs get done soon, but I'm also worried about what might happen when the cold weather finally thaws out... 🀞
