Didn't get to join ABC13's Share Your Holidays drive? It's not too late to help

Houstonians Show Holiday Cheer by Supporting Food Drive Efforts Despite Missing Out on ABC13’s Initial Campaign

For those who missed the opportunity to participate in ABC13's Share Your Holidays food drive, there is still time to help make a difference. The campaign, now in its 45th year, aims to provide meals for thousands of individuals in southeast Texas.

Famous mascot Toro from the Houston Texans made an appearance at Ball High School in Galveston, surprising students and staff with his Secret Santa visit. The event, which kicked off on Giving Tuesday, saw a significant outpouring of generosity, with $112,300 pledged by sponsors and over 13,000 pounds of food collected.

Meanwhile, the Houston Food Bank received a substantial donation from Disney, courtesy of its partnership with Feeding America. This generous gift will help provide approximately 45,000 meals for individuals in need across southeast Texas.

One million people in the region struggle with food insecurity, meaning they often face difficult choices between paying bills and accessing nutritious food. While government shutdowns have led to increased demand at food banks, some households continue to experience hunger despite having working adults and stable housing.

In fact, a recent report from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that 39% of Houston and Harris County households are experiencing food insecurity. This rate is significantly higher than the national average, with Black and Hispanic residents facing the largest disparities in household food insecurity.

According to Feeding Texas, Texas has the highest number of people facing food insecurity in the nation, with over 5 million Texans struggling to access nutritious food. Rural areas often face unique challenges, including limited transportation options and low wages, exacerbating the issue.

ABC13 hopes to exceed its previous record of 1.6 million meals by accepting donations through New Year's Eve. By supporting Share Your Holidays, individuals can make a tangible difference in their community, providing three meals for every $1 donated.

Visit the Houston Food Bank website or scan the QR code shown during ABC13 news segments to drop off your donation and help make a lasting impact on those struggling with food insecurity.

I just found out about this Share Your Holidays food drive thingy 🤔... I was really bummed that our school didn't have one, but it's awesome that people in Houston are still showing their holiday cheer by supporting the cause 💕. 1 mil people struggling with food insecurity is crazy! 🙅‍♂️ It's like, some people might think they're fine, but they're not 🤷‍♀️. I bet some of my friends' families would benefit from this... it's really sad to think about 👎. Can we get one at our school next year? 🤞

I'm not surprised the initial campaign was low-key, considering how divided our city can get on issues like education and healthcare funding 💸🤔. You gotta wonder if people were genuinely invested in helping out or just checking off their holiday boxes 🎁. Anyways, it's awesome that Disney stepped up with a big donation - maybe we're seeing a shift towards corporate responsibility? 📈 And can we talk about how the numbers on food insecurity are straight-up staggering? 39% of households in Houston struggling to get by? That's not just a issue for individuals, but also for our local economy 📊. I'm all for this Share Your Holidays campaign, but let's keep pushing for more sustainable solutions that address the root causes of poverty and inequality 💪.

I'm still amazed by how much food drive efforts can bring out the best in people 🤩. Like, who wouldn't want to give back to their community? And it's awesome that Toro from the Houston Texans made an appearance at Ball High School - kids are so impressionable and loving those surprise visits must be incredible for them! 😊 Anyway, I think what really gets me is how food insecurity affects families in Houston. 39% of households struggling with hunger... that's just a number, but it feels like so much more when you think about the people behind it 🤕. I hope ABC13 can reach its goal and provide even more meals for those who need them most - every little bit counts, right? 💖

🤯 I mean have you seen the stats? 39% of households in Houston are experiencing food insecurity 🤕 and it's not just about the number, it's about the people. Imagine having to choose between paying bills or eating a decent meal. It's crazy! 🤯 Also, did you know that Texas has the highest number of people facing food insecurity in the nation? 5 million Texans are struggling 🌎. And it's not just about one person, it's about families, kids, and communities. We gotta step up our game and support organizations like the Houston Food Bank 🙏. The $112,300 pledged by sponsors is a good start, but we need more! 💸 Can you believe the food drive collected over 13,000 pounds of food? That's a lot of good karma ⚡️. I'm donating what I can and encouraging everyone to do the same 🎁. We can make a difference, one meal at a time 🍴💖.

idk why ppl think donating food is hard lol... it's like, come on guys! 45 yrs of doin the same thing & still we got ppl strugglin 2 get by? that's crazy. btw, Toro from the Texans is my fave mascot 😂🐴. but seriously, it's all about bein grateful for what u have & sharin w/ others. let's keep up the good vibes & make a difference! 💖

🍴👫 I just saw that Houstonians are still showing holiday spirit by supporting food drives despite missing out on the initial campaign 🕰️. That's awesome! $112,300 pledged so far is not bad at all 🤑. Disney and Feeding America partnership is a great combo 💪. It's heartbreaking to think 1 mil ppl in Texas are struggling with food insecurity 🤯. We should do more, especially for rural areas 🚜. I love that ABC13 wants to break the record 📈. If you can spare $3 for every meal, it makes a difference! 🌟

I'm so not surprised people still haven't given enough 🤦‍♂️. I mean, what's $1 a meal gonna do? You're just making things last longer for them. And don't even get me started on the stats... 39% of Houston households struggling with food insecurity? That's just great. Meanwhile, Disney gives a bunch of money to the Food Bank and suddenly everyone's all smiles 🤑. It's just a drop in the bucket. They need actual solutions, not just donations to patch things up. And what about those who can't donate, but still want to help? Forget it, they're stuck paying bills too.

I gotta say, Texans are always so nice & generous, especially around the holidays 🎄👍! Who needs ABC13's campaign when you got Toro from the Houston Texans spreading cheer at Ball High School? That Secret Santa visit is like a holiday miracle right there 😂. And $112k pledged by sponsors? That's more than I spent on avocado toast this year 🥑... just kidding, but seriously, it's awesome to see people come together for a good cause.

And btw, 39% of households in Houston are struggling with food insecurity? That's like, a whole lot of people, fam! 😬 But hey, at least we've got organizations like the Houston Food Bank & Disney stepping up to make a difference. And if you're feeling generous, donating through Share Your Holidays is a great way to help out 🤝.

Oh, and did I mention Texas has the highest number of people facing food insecurity in the nation? Yeah, that's like, a lot of Texans who are hungry 🍔🌮... just saying. Anyway, let's all do our part & support Share Your Holidays until New Year's Eve ⏰!

🤝 OMG u guys 39% of houston households r strugglin w food insecurity thats crazy!! 🤯 like whats goin on? 🤔 i mean we got all these fams w workin adults but still cant afford no grub... it aint right 💸 5 million texans are countin on us to help tho 🙏

anywayz dis food drive is still open til NYE so u can donate & make a diff 🎁 $1 gets u 3 meals lol who cares about that? 🤑 just take ur cash, donate it, & enjoy the feel good vibes 🌈 meanwhile lets get all them funds in for 45 yr old houston food bank 🙏

I'm still not convinced about these "food drive" events 🤔... I mean, they're good for publicity and all that, but let's be real, how much of the collected food actually ends up helping the people in need? 🤑 There are always gonna be some bureaucratic hoops to jump through before it even reaches those who need it most. And what about the long-term solutions? Just collecting a bunch of canned goods and calling it a day isn't gonna solve the problem... we need systemic changes, not just Band-Aid charity efforts 😕. Plus, have you seen the costs associated with these events? $112k? That's a lot of money that could be going straight to the people in need, instead of lining some corporate pocket 🤑.

🙏 I totally get why some people missed out on the initial campaign, but still, it's amazing how much support we're seeing for Share Your Holidays! 45 years is a long time, and it's awesome that Toro made an appearance at Ball High School 🐴💕. The fact that Disney stepped up with a big donation to Feeding America is pretty cool too 🎁. We know one million people in the Houston area are struggling with food insecurity, and it's heartbreaking that households with working adults can still face hunger 🤕. Let's hope we can all make a difference by donating what we can over the next few weeks! 💖

Ugh, I'm so down for this Share Your Holidays campaign! 🤩 45 years in and still making a difference? That's amazing! And can we talk about Toro, the Texans' mascot, being a total sweetheart? 🐴😂 I mean, who wouldn't want to be surprised by a Secret Santa visit from their favorite team?

But seriously, it's heartbreaking to think that 1 million people in our own city are struggling with food insecurity. Like, how can we not do more to help each other out? And these numbers aren't just for Houston - Texas as a whole is dealing with this huge issue, and it's all the more messed up because you'd think we're a super prosperous state or something 🤔.

Okay, so let's get back to the good stuff. If you haven't already, please do consider donating to Share Your Holidays! Every little bit counts, especially when you can make 3 meals for every $1 donated. And if you want to drop off your donation, just head to the Houston Food Bank website or scan that QR code during ABC13 news segments. Easy peasy 🙌

I'm so over all these food drives 🙄... I mean, what's wrong with people not wanting to part with their cash? It's like they're voluntarily breaking the bank for some charity 🤑. And don't even get me started on how long this stuff is going on - 45 years? Can't we just support each other all year round instead of only when it's convenient?

🚨 just saw that 5 million Texans are struggling to access nutritious food, like, what's going on? 🤯 rural areas got it the worst, limited transport options & low wages, no wonder people gotta choose between bills & groceries... and now we're at 39% of Houston households experiencing food insecurity? 😕 can't help but think we're not doing enough to tackle this problem. let's hope they hit that 1.6 million meal goal 🤞

ugh i feel so bad for these ppl in houston they gotta deal with food insecurity despite having stable jobs n homes 🤕 but its heartening 2 see people comin thru like dis Disney partnership & all the donations pourin in it makes u wanna cry happy tears 💧 but seriously 39% of households in houston are strugglin so we gotta do more 🙏 lets try 2 exceed that 1.6 million meal goal by new yrs eve & make a real difference in these communities ❤️

I'm so stoked that people in Houston are still showing their holiday spirit by supporting food drive efforts, even if they missed the initial campaign 🎅. It's amazing to see Toro from the Texans making appearances at schools and spreading cheer – who wouldn't want a Secret Santa visit from a mascot? 💖 The fact that Disney partnered with Feeding America to donate over 45k meals is huge too! I mean, we all know how tough it can be for people struggling with food insecurity. Did you see that report about 39% of households in Houston and Harris County being affected? That's crazy high 🤯

omg u guys i'm so hyped abt dis!! 🤩 i was thinkin we r all good in htown but it turns out theres still ppl strugglin 2 find food lol like 39% of households r experiencin food insecurity thats wild i feel bad for those people tho, cant imagine havin 2 choose btw payin bills & gettin food its actually pretty amazin dat dis campaign is goin on fer so long, its showin ppl r willin 2 lend a hand 🤝

I mean, it's good that people are stepping up to support the food drive, but let's be real, it's only a Band-Aid solution 🤔. 45 years of an annual campaign isn't gonna magically solve the systemic issues of poverty and inequality in this city. And $112,300 is cute, but what about the real numbers? Like, where are those funds coming from? Is it just corporate sponsorships or are people actually digging into their pockets to help out?

And don't even get me started on the stats - 39% of households struggling with food insecurity? That's a huge chunk of the population. It's like, what's being done to address the root causes of this issue? Is it just about tossing some canned goods and calling it a day? 🤷‍♀️ I'm not saying no one is helping, but it feels like we're just treating symptoms instead of tackling the problem head-on.

I guess it's better than nothing, though. If you can spare a buck or two, I won't complain 😐. Just don't expect me to get all teary-eyed about it.

So I was watching this news about the food drive in Houston and I'm thinking what's really crazy is that even though the initial campaign didn't go as planned, people are still coming together to help out 🤔... like I get it, there's a lot of issues with food insecurity and I can only imagine how hard it must be for those families to make ends meet. And 39% of households in Houston experiencing food insecurity? That's just wild 🚨... I wonder if this is part of the problem with government shutdowns making things worse or is there something else at play? 🤷‍♀️
