Disparaging email sent to Penn students, alumni is fake, university says

University of Pennsylvania Students Face Disparaging Scam Email, Claims University; Investigation Underway

A malicious email making disparaging claims against the University of Pennsylvania has been sent to students and alumni, with the university confirming it is a fake. The email, which was shared on social media platforms, appeared to come from the Graduate School of Education's emails but was actually created by hackers.

The message contained derogatory language toward Penn, labeling the university "elitist" and urging recipients not to donate. A subject line that read "We got hacked (Action Required)" added to the email's authenticity, as it claimed to be an urgent action request from a legitimate source. However, officials have stated that this is simply a phishing scam with no connection to the university.

Penn officials have said their Office of Information Security is working on resolving the issue and securing the institution's systems against future cyber threats. "A fraudulent email has been circulated that appears to come from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education," a spokesperson for Penn confirmed, emphasizing that it does not reflect the university or its GSE's values.

While some recipients of the email were students or alumni with legitimate connections to the institution, others had no affiliation with Penn whatsoever. Social media posts showed that people received multiple versions of the message, with the number ranging from one to ten times.

The email also contained false claims about Penn's security practices and admissions policies, specifically criticizing the university's use of affirmative action in its admissions process. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against the policy, invalidating it in 2023.

This is not the first time that Penn students have faced a phishing scam. In 2022, students received a satirical email from the Board of Trustees that criticized interim President Larry Jameson and former President Liz Magill's return to office.

omg you guys 🀯 this is so frustrating! i'm not surprised tho, like, our university is already under so much scrutiny with all the online stuff going on... & now they have to deal with some scammers trying to ruin their rep πŸ™„. anyway, glad the university is taking it seriously & is looking into it ASAP πŸ’». and btw, this is like, super ironic that some of these email recipients had no affiliation with Penn lol what's next, right? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Dude I'm so fired up about this, it's just another example of how these scammers think they can just waltz in and attack our institutions 🚫. I mean, come on, Penn is a top-tier school with a legacy like no other, but hackers are trying to bring them down by spreading lies about their admissions process? It's just not right.

And what really gets my goat is that these scammers are using social media platforms to spread this misinformation, knowing full well that some people will believe it. I mean, think about it, they're using the university's own email system and even claiming to be from the Graduate School of Education... it's just a classic phishing scam with a twist.

But what I want to know is why are these scammers targeting Penn specifically? Is it because we're a symbol of excellence in education? Or maybe it's because they're trying to take down an institution that's actually doing something right, like using affirmative action to create a more inclusive and diverse student body. Whatever the reason, one thing's for sure - we need to be on high alert and demand better from our leaders when it comes to cybersecurity 🚨.

omg, this is so messed up 🀯 like they're trying to ruin people's day, right? I mean, who sends out a fake email saying the uni is "elitist" and trying to dissuade ppl from donating? sounds like some kinda conspiracy to me... all these phishing scams are just too convenient. Penn's gotta step up their security game 🚨. And what's with these hackers always targeting students & alumni? Can't they see they're just trying to create fear & uncertainty? The uni's already got enough on its plate, no need for this drama πŸ˜’.

Ugh man this is crazy 🀯! Like how can people try to scam students like that? The University of Pennsylvania has already been through this in 2022 and now they have to deal with another phishing scam?! It's just not right, these hackers are so evil 😑.

I'm glad the university is taking action to secure their systems and stuff, but I feel bad for those students who got targeted by this fake email. Like, if you didn't even go to Penn how did they know your address or whatever? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's just not cool. And the part about the affirmative action policy, like what's next? Trying to discredit the whole university? Not okay, man πŸ˜’.

Anyway, I'm sure the school will get through this and come out even stronger on the other side πŸ’ͺ. Keep your chin up, Penn students! Don't let these hackers bring you down 🌈

Ugh 🀯 this is so frustrating! Some people think it's funny to send fake emails like this, but it's just not cool πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, can you imagine getting an email that makes you question the integrity of your own university? It's just a scam, and now Penn students are having to deal with the fallout 😬.

And honestly, who does this stuff? πŸ€” They're not even trying to be sneaky, it's just a bunch of lazy hackers who want to cause some trouble 🚫. And the worst part is that some people actually fell for it πŸ™ˆ. Like, come on, guys, use your common sense! If an email from someone you trust says "action required", it's probably a phishing attempt πŸ“§.

I'm glad Penn is taking this seriously and taking steps to secure their systems πŸ’». We need more institutions like that prioritizing cybersecurity 🚫. And to the hackers out there, just no πŸ˜‚. You're not funny, you're just embarrassing yourselves πŸ™„.

πŸ˜’ can you believe this? some people are just too gullible πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. i mean, come on, if someone emails you saying they got hacked (action required) from the university's grad school of education... red flag alert πŸ”΄. and to make matters worse, they're sharing false info about penn's admissions policies 🀒. like, no one needs that stress in their life 😩. and what's with all these phishing scams circulating around campus? 2022 already had a satirical email from the board of trustees... seems like penn students are just targets for hackers πŸ’». can't we all just get along and not fall for fake emails 🀝?

Ugh πŸ€• this just shows how vulnerable we are online 🚨 anyone can create fake emails that look legit. I'm glad Penn is on top of it, but seriously, shouldn't we be doing more to protect ourselves? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I remember that satirical email back in 2022, it was like a wake-up call for us students to be more careful with our online interactions πŸ’‘. And now this... it's just not right. We need to be more vigilant and report these kinds of emails ASAP so we don't spread the fake info around 🚫

Can't believe these scammers think they can just send out some fake email with fake Penn cred and people will fall for it πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Like, who tries to label a legit university as "elitist" to make people not donate? That's low, even for hackers πŸ˜’. I'm glad the real Penn is on top of this and is taking steps to secure their systems. We gotta stay vigilant online, folks! 🚨

Ugh, this is so annoying! 🀯 I mean, who tries to scam a whole university? The fact that they created an email that looked like it was coming from the Graduate School of Education just to make it look legit is really shady πŸ˜’. And the part about labeling Penn "elitist" and urging people not to donate is just low πŸ€•.

I'm so glad that the university is taking this seriously and investigating, but I feel for all the students and alumni who got caught up in it πŸ’”. It's always a good reminder that we need to be cautious with our email attachments and click-throughs πŸ“Š. And can't they just come up with more creative ways to scam people than making fake emails? πŸ˜‚

On a bigger note, it's crazy how this is not the first time Penn students have faced phishing scams 🀯. It just goes to show that universities are constantly being targeted by cyber threats and we need to stay vigilant πŸ”’.

Omg what's up with these scammers ?? 🀯 They think they can just create some fake email and try to tarnish Penn's rep? Like, who do they think they are? Newsflash: it's a total phishing scam, and the university is on it 🚫. And honestly, I'm so impressed that Penn has been dealing with these kinds of scams for years now... like, what even is the point of having a GSE if you're just gonna be targeted by hackers? πŸ€”. Anyway, to all my Philly peeps and fellow Penn students, let's keep it moving and not fall for this nonsense. Stay vigilant, stay informed! πŸ”’
