Eagles-49ers preview: Five things to watch when the 49ers have the ball

As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to take on the San Francisco 49ers in their Wild Card Round matchup, several key factors will determine the outcome. First and foremost, Christian McCaffrey's workload presents a significant challenge for the Eagles' defense. With 413 touches this season, McCaffrey was the workhorse of the Niners offense, averaging just 3.86 yards per carry. His effectiveness as a runner is debatable, but his receiving skills are undeniable, with 102 receptions and 924 yards this season.

The Eagles will need to be cautious in their coverage of McCaffrey, who often uses short passes after the catch to create big plays. The Niners' passing game also funnels through players typically covered by linebackers, making it a crucial matchup for middle linebacker Nakobe Dean and his teammates. However, with the Eagles' interior defensive line pushing the pocket and athletes like Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt preventing Purdy from escaping, the Niners offense may struggle to find consistency.

One area where the 49ers can exploit the Eagles is in the run game, particularly if they can get their backs working north-south. The Eagles struggled against the run this season, and if McCaffrey can find openings on the ground, it could be a major challenge for the Birds.

Brock Purdy's ability to extend plays with his feet also poses a problem for the Eagles' pass rushers. While he holds onto the ball for an average of just 3.17 seconds per play, he has made several deep throws this season and can exploit defensive weaknesses.

On special teams, however, the Niners are vastly improved. Skyy Moore's impact on punt returns has been significant, and kicker Eddy Piñeiro is a huge improvement over last season's Jake Moody. The Eagles will need to be sharp in their coverage units if they want to prevent big plays on kickoff and punt return.

Ultimately, the 49ers' offense runs through McCaffrey, Purdy's ability to extend plays with his feet poses a challenge for the Eagles, but the Niners' improved special teams could make all the difference.

The Eagles defense has been suspect this season 🤔. I mean, they've given up some big plays on the ground, and if McCaffrey can find holes to run through, it's gonna be a long day for Jalen Hurts 😬. They need to step up their pass rush game and make Purdy uncomfortable in the pocket. If they can do that, I think they've got a shot at taking down the 49ers 👊

I'm loving this matchup! I think the Eagles have a great shot at winning if they can contain McCaffrey and get some pressure on Purdy when he's not extending plays with his feet 🤔. Their D-line is looking fierce, especially against the run – if they can stuff the Niners' backs, that'll take a ton of pressure off their pass rushers 💪. Skyy Moore is gonna be a big factor in this game though, I think the Eagles need to keep an eye on him and not let him get too far downfield 🏃‍♂️.

I'm so stoked for this game 🤩! The 49ers are like, super unpredictable right now, and I love it 🤔. Christian McCaffrey is gonna be a beast, no doubt about it 😂. His receiving skills are crazy, and if he can get open on the ground too, the Eagles' D is in trouble 💥. But at the same time, their pass rush is looking fierce 🎯. I think it's all about finding that balance - when Purdy can extend plays with his feet, but also gets hit hard by the Eagles' interior line 😅. And on special teams, Skyy Moore's returns are gonna be a game-changer 🔥! The Niners' improvement is huge, and I'm here for it 🤩. Who knows, maybe this will be a low-scoring game where both teams just grind it out? That would be epic 💪!

🤔 this matchup is gonna be so sick!! i think mccaffrey is gonna get some big chunks of yardage off the ground, especially if they can find those north-south runs... and purdy's ability to extend plays is gonna keep the eagles' pass rushers guessing all day long 🕰️ 3.17 seconds is not a lot of time to react! 🔴 but on the other hand, nakobe dean and company are gonna have their hands full with skyy moore on punt returns... if the niners can capitalize on some big plays, it could be a real challenge for the eagles 🏈

🏈 So I'm watching this game and it's all about Christian McCaffrey right? He's like the workhorse of the 49ers, always getting the touches. The Eagles gotta keep an eye on him or he'll find ways to break through 🤔. But at the same time, Purdy's got some sneaky skills too - can extend plays with his feet and make deep throws... it's gonna be a tough one for Philly 🎯. On special teams, I'm loving how much better Skyy Moore is on punt returns! The Eagles need to bring their A-game if they wanna shut those down 💪
