Early voting begins for NJ Gov. Sherrill's former congressional seat

NJ Governor Sherrill's former congressional seat is up for grabs in a special election primary that began Thursday. The contest, which has drawn nearly two dozen Democratic candidates and one Republican contender, is being closely watched as a bellwether for the direction of the party ahead of the midterms.

The 11th Congressional District, encompassing parts of Essex, Passaic, and Morris counties, is seen as safe for Democrats. However, with several top-tier candidates vying for the nomination, including Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, former Rep. Tom Malinowski, and former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, it's anyone's game.

Analilia Mejia, a longtime New Jersey activist endorsed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has generated significant buzz among party insiders as the candidate who could consolidate left-wing support in the district. With so many Democratic competitors, it's estimated that a small margin of victory could be enough to secure the nomination.

As the campaign enters its final week, candidates are scrambling to increase turnout. Mejia's team plans to launch a "power to the polls" campaign, while Gill's team will host "after parties" for early voters. Way, meanwhile, is reminding voters that she was instrumental in implementing early voting in New Jersey during Gov. Phil Murphy's tenure.

Despite the challenges posed by winter weather – including a nor'easter forecasted for this weekend – campaigns are adapting to reach voters. Zach Beecher's team has seen an uptick in engagement as snowy weather keeps people at home, while Justin Strickland's "Rebel Alliance" campaign plans to use music and a van to encourage residents to cast their ballots.

For those planning to vote early, NJ.gov provides a helpful tool to locate polling places. With the general election set for April 16, voters in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District have until February 3 to submit their absentee ballots or cast their votes in person.

I'm low-key kinda excited about this special election primary πŸ€—, reminds me of when Obama was running back in the day, it's like a dΓ©jΓ  vu moment, all these youngins vying for power πŸ’₯. But seriously, Brendan Gill and Tom Malinowski are solid candidates, they've both got a good track record, unlike those other two, who, idk, I'm not really feeling Tahesha Way as much πŸ€”. And Analilia Mejia's got the left-wing crowd in a frenzy πŸ’ͺ, it'll be interesting to see how that shakes out. Winter weather's gonna make voting a real challenge, hope everyone stays safe and gets out to vote πŸ’•!

I'm low-key rooting for Analilia Mejia, ya know? πŸ€” She's been makin' waves with her "power to the polls" campaign and Bernie Sanders' endorsement, so I think she's got a real shot at consolidatin' those left-wing voters. The thing that's got me curious is how the other contenders will shake it out – Brendan Gill's experience as an Essex County Commissioner might give him an edge, but Tom Malinowski's ties to Obama could bring in some big-name endorsements. And don't count out Tahesha Way, she was part of those early voting efforts with Gov. Murphy so that's gotta count for somethin' 😊 It's gonna be a wild ride, especially with winter weather throwin' everything off.

I'm totally team Analilia Mejia 🀩! She's got that Bernie Sanders vibe goin on and I love her energy πŸ’–. People say she's a dark horse but I think she's got this πŸŽ‰. The way she's talking about empowering voters is giving me LIFE πŸ’ͺ. Those other candidates are solid too, don't get me wrong, but Mejia just feels like the real deal πŸ”₯. And can we talk about how awesome it is that they're all using winter weather to their advantage ❄️? Like, who needs sunshine when you've got snow to keep people at home and voting? πŸ˜‚

idk how long it'll take for them to decide on this new congressperson πŸ€”πŸ‘€ i mean we already know who the democratic party is gonna choose and its not gonna be an easy election for them lol those republicans gotta bring their a game πŸ˜‚πŸ—³οΈ sherrill's seat has been in the hands of democrats for ages so it'll be interesting to see if a republican can even get close πŸ”₯πŸ’₯

I'm so done with how crazy this primary is getting 🀯. It's like they're all trying to outdo each other and make the whole thing more dramatic than it needs to be. I mean, who needs that much energy? In my day, we just voted and were done with it, no fuss, no muss πŸ™„. And what's with all these "bellwether" terms and midterms? It feels like they're speaking a different language or something πŸ’β€β™€οΈ.

I'm still rooting for Brendan Gill, though - he seems like a solid choice. But then there's this Analilia Mejia who's got the left-wing crowd all abuzz...it's like she's trying to be some kind of superhero πŸ¦Έβ€β™€οΈ. I guess it's hard not to get excited when there are so many big names in the mix.

Winter weather or not, I'm still gonna vote early - who needs a nor'easter to make me want to cast my ballot? πŸ˜’ At least they're trying to reach voters with some creative campaigns...I kinda love that Zach Beecher's team is seeing more engagement when it's snowy outside 🌨️. It just makes me feel like things aren't all lost, you know?

This special election is gonna be lit πŸ’₯ I mean, with so many big names throwing their hats into the ring, it's anyone's game 🀯. The fact that Analystia Mejia is generating all this buzz is crazy 🀩, she's got the left-wing thing down pat πŸ”₯. But at the end of the day, it's gonna come down to who can get out the vote and bring in those key demographics πŸ“Š. I'm loving how the campaigns are getting creative with their strategies, from Mejia's "power to the polls" to Zach Beecher's snow-day engagement boost ❄️. One thing's for sure, this election is gonna be a wild ride 🎠

I'm low-key excited about this special election primary! It's gonna be a wild ride, especially with so many top-tier Dems throwing their hat into the ring 🀯. I think Analilia Mejia's got some momentum going on with Bernie Sanders' endorsement, but let's not count out Brendan Gill just yet - he's been around the block a few times and has some serious grassroots cred πŸ’ͺ. It's interesting to see how the party is positioning itself ahead of the midterms... will they go left or play it safe? πŸ€” Either way, I'm just hoping we get a good candidate who'll actually listen to the people in that district! πŸ‘‚

πŸ€” I'm kinda curious about these candidates and how they're gonna shake things up in NJ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ. Mejia's got some serious momentum going on, but Gill's experience as a commissioner could be a major plus for Dems πŸ“ˆ. Meanwhile, Way's enthusiasm is infectious - can she capitalize on that energy? πŸ’– The Republican contender might have a tough road ahead of them, but you never know what's gonna happen in NJ politics 😳

omg u guys i'm literally so hyped for this special election primary 🀩! like, i know NJ's 11th Congressional District is supposed to be safe for Dems but idk about that anymore with all these strong candidates vying for the nom πŸ€‘ it's anyone's game and i am HERE. FOR. IT! πŸ‘€ analilia mejia is low-key my queen btw πŸ€— she's got the left-wing support thing down pat and i'm so here for her "power to the polls" campaign πŸ’ͺ let's get out and vote, nj! πŸ—³οΈ

OMG, can you believe how packed this election is? I mean, a dozen+ Dem candidates vying for one seat? It's like, what even is the point of having multiple options if they're all gonna run against each other πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. But, you know, maybe that's what they need - some fresh blood to shake things up in NJ politics. I'm loving Analilia Mejia's "power to the polls" vibe, though! It sounds like she's got a real grassroots movement going on. And, honestly, who wouldn't want to vote for someone who helped implement early voting? 🀩 Zach Beecher's team is also being super creative with their snowy weather strategy... like, using a van to encourage people to vote? Genius, right? πŸ˜‚

Man... I was thinking about this special election and I'm like "what's up with all these candidates? It's crazy!" πŸ˜‚ Back in my day, we just had a few options for politicians, but now it's like a whole party is running! 🀯 I mean, I'm excited to see who's gonna step up, but it's also nerve-wracking because you never know what's gonna happen. I've heard that Analilia Mejia is getting some buzz, and if she can pull off the left-wing vote, it could be interesting... πŸ’₯ But at the same time, whoever wins has to navigate a pretty competitive party, so we'll see how that all shakes out. πŸ€” And man, I'm so over winter weather already... like, who even likes shoveling snow? ❄️

πŸ€” the thing that gets me is how they're all using socials to try and get people to vote πŸ“± it feels like a huge waste of time, ya know? we've got real issues to discuss on here but instead everyone's out here promoting their campaigns πŸ€‘ meanwhile the actual problems are being ignored. i mean, what about the state of our infrastructure or affordable healthcare πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ at least in NJ they're making it easy for people to vote early πŸ™

πŸ€” this election is gonna be so interesting, i think nj is really showing that they can produce a strong candidate from the state, and with all these dems vying for it, it's anyone's game πŸ†πŸ‘€ - @NJvoter22
πŸš— i'm loving the creative ways zach's team is using social media to engage voters during winter, who knew snow could be a good thing? β˜ƒοΈπŸ’» - @SocialMediaSavvy
πŸ’ͺ tahesha way's early voting experience is gonna be super valuable in this election, hope she gets more recognition for it πŸ™πŸ—³οΈ - @VotingRightsMatter

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda cool that they’re having a special election primary with so many candidates. It shows the party is really invested in finding someone who can represent them well in the district πŸ€”. But, I gotta say, some of these candidates are pretty interesting, like Brendan Gill and Tahesha Way. They've both done some impressive stuff in their careers, and it'll be fun to see how they compare πŸ’‘. And, yeah, Analilia Mejia's team is trying some cool strategies with the "power to the polls" campaign, but we'll just have to wait and see if they really make a difference 🀞.

I'm so down with whoever loses this primary lol πŸ˜‚ I mean what's the worst that could happen? A bunch of rich folks fighting over a seat that's basically guaranteed for a Dem? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's like, can't we all just get along... and vote for whoever has the best campaign slogan? "Tahesha Way" sounds like a solid winner to me 😎. And honestly, who needs experience or popularity when you've got Bernie Sanders' endorsement? πŸ’― I bet it'll be a real nail-biter of a primary, but let's be real, it's gonna be a Dem no matter what πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

omg i had the chance to meet tahesha way at this one activist event last year and she seems so down to earth πŸ€— her energy is super inspiring, like i was talking about voting rights for ages and then she just got all passionate and it was contagious lol anyway, it's gonna be super interesting to see how this primary plays out... so many big names are running and it could get pretty messy πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” I'm so done with how long these primaries are taking! In my day, we used to have actual debates instead of just a bunch of social media posts and town halls πŸ“Ί. It's like they're trying to confuse the voters on purpose, you know? And don't even get me started on the weather excuses 🌨️... "Oh, it's snowy, so we'll just do our campaign stuff from home!" Give me a break! Back in my day, we'd bundle up and get out there, rain or shine ☁️.
