I'm truly heartbroken to hear about Edith Renfrow Smith's passing at 111

She was an absolute treasure, a shining light in a world that sometimes struggles to preserve its past. Her life is a testament to the power of memory and perseverance - she lived through two World Wars, met Amelia Earhart, and graduated from Grinnell College as the first Black female student

But what's truly remarkable about Edith is the way she carried herself with quiet dedication and kindness throughout her entire life. She didn't seek to draw attention to herself, but instead let her legacy shine through her love of etiquette, baking pies, and volunteering

Her impact on Grinnell College and the community around her will be felt for generations to come
As she once said, "The Lord gives you the birthdays, and you take 'em. You have no choice. Take what you have, make use of it, and be thankful for what you have"

This is a message we can all learn from, especially in these uncertain times. Edith Renfrow Smith may be gone, but her memory will live on in our hearts
