Ellen DeGeneres left Trump's America. Will the British weather force her to return? | Arwa Mahdawi

A British Winter of Discontent: Will Ellen DeGeneres and Other Celebrities Be Forced to Return?

As the UK's winter weather sets in, there's been growing speculation that some of America's most high-profile celebrities are itching to return home. The latest name to join the list is none other than daytime TV mogul Ellen DeGeneres. According to rumors, the comedian and her wife Portia de Rossi are feeling the chill – literally and figuratively.

Just last year, when Donald Trump was elected president, DeGeneres and de Rossi declared they weren't going back on their decision to live in the UK. "Everything here is just better," DeGeneres said during a public appearance in July, seemingly oblivious to the winter that's about to hit. But as the weather warms up, it seems these Californians are having second thoughts.

While their reasons for wanting to leave may be unclear, some of their celebrity friends aren't exactly keeping quiet about their own plans to return to Trumpland. Comedian Miley Cyrus was quick to clarify that her relocation plans were "just joking" after initially announcing she would move if Trump became president. And while Barbra Streisand has been vocal about her disdain for the president, she hasn't taken any concrete steps to leave.

On the other hand, some celebrities have made their homes abroad and seem determined not to return. Courtney Love, who has lived in London since 2019, is set to become a British citizen – although it's unclear if this is solely due to her distaste for Trump. And comedian Rosie O'Donnell recently relocated her family to Ireland after announcing she was concerned about her non-binary child's safety in America.

So why are some celebrities so quick to leave, while others seem content to stay put? While the media might love to poke fun at self-deporting celebrities, it's hard not to sympathize with those who genuinely fear for their personal safety. As Trump continues to make headlines with his divisive rhetoric and policies, it's clear that many Americans are feeling the effects.

But despite the rumors of a mass exodus, one thing is certain: the UK won't be welcoming back any American celebrities anytime soon. The country has its own brand of gloomy weather, after all – and sometimes, that's just enough to keep them from wanting to return.

I gotta say... I get why people are fleeing the US right now 🤯. With Trump still in power, it's getting harder and harder for ppl who don't agree with him to feel safe. Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi can just chill at home in their mansion in LA, but what about those who are struggling to make ends meet or living in a country that doesn't support the LGBTQ+ community? It's not all glamour and sunshine being an American celebrity 🌴.

And I'm not buying that some of these celebs were just "joking" about leaving when Trump got elected 😂. Newsflash: it wasn't funny, guys! It was a serious concern for many people who are worried about their safety and well-being in America. Courtney Love becoming a British citizen? That's no joke 🇬🇧.

The thing is, ppl who can afford to move abroad might not be the only ones feeling the effects of Trump's policies 😔. There are so many others who are quietly suffering because they don't have the same privileges or resources as these celebrities. So yeah, I get why some celebs would want to leave, and it's not something to poke fun at either 🤷‍♀️.

I feel bad for Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, they do seem like they've fallen out of love with the UK 🤕. I mean, who wouldn't want a warm cuppa and a good excuse to escape the British rain? But you're right, it's not just about the weather – there are a lot of celebrities who genuinely fear for their safety in America under Trump's presidency. It's like, fair play to them if they want to take a break from all that drama 🙏.

I'm curious though, what would happen if all these celebrities were to leave? Would it be some sort of anti-Trump protest or just a case of "oh no, I don't wanna go home"? And honestly, while I get why some people might want to escape the UK's gloomy weather, sometimes you just have to roll with it ❄️.

ugh i cant believe it's coming down in london 🌨️ like i was literally living vicariously through ellen de generes last year when she said everything here is better lol now she wants to leave 🤦‍♀️ what about all the brits who want a taste of american tv shows and celebrities though? are they just gonna get left behind in the uk's gloomy weather ❄️

I think it's pretty relatable that some people are having second thoughts about living abroad when the weather is getting harsher 🤔. As a Brit myself, I can vouch for how gloomy our winters can be, and it's easy to appreciate the warmth and sunshine of other countries in the winter months. It's not just about personal preference, though - I think some people genuinely fear for their safety due to Trump's policies and rhetoric 🌊. On the flip side, celebrities who have made their homes abroad seem determined to stay put, which is totally fair considering they've invested a lot of time and money into their new lives. Maybe it's just a case of weighing up the pros and cons, you know?

lol @ these celebs and their climate control 🤣 i mean who hasn't felt like escaping the UK in winter tho? 😂 but seriously though, can you imagine having to deal with Trump's drama on a daily basis? no thanks, give me the rain and grey skies any day ☁️ it's crazy how some of these celebs are just joking about leaving, but at the same time i get why they'd wanna bail – safety first, right? 🙌

I feel bad for Ellen DeGeneres & her wife Portia de Rossi, they must be really missing the sunshine 😔. I get why some celebs are worried about their safety in America right now 🤕. But at the same time, I'm curious - if we're gonna make such a big deal out of them leaving, have we considered that they might just want to spend more quality time with their loved ones? ⏰ We shouldn't be judging them for wanting a better life for themselves and their families 🤗. And let's not forget that some people (like Courtney Love) are actually going through the motions to become British citizens - what's the point of even living abroad if you're not gonna stay? 🤷‍♀️

omg i cant even right now lol 🤣 like seriously who can blame em though? living in a country where trump is in power is literally stressful 😩 especially for the celebs with family members who arent straight or whatever. its not just about personal safety, its about feeling like you can be urself without being judged or attacked 24/7 🤖 and honestly ellen degeneres was kinda clueless last year when she said everything is better in the uk lol but now i get it 💁‍♀️

i mean i feel for courtney love too btw getting british citizenship is like a major step towards claiming ur independence from all the drama back home 🤴 and rosie odonnell is doing her fam first which is more than we can say for some celebs who are just gonna tweet about their feelings without taking action 💁‍♀️

anyway yeah its def not surprising that some ppl wanna leave the us rn but im sure itll be a slow process since theyve already got their lives set up abroad 🌍 and lets be real the uk has its own share of drama too so idk if thats really gonna be an option for them either 😂

OMG u guys!! 🤯 I'm low-key surprised no celebs are already FLEAING the UK 🚀💨 like Ellen and Portia de Rossi were so down for a British winter but now they're having 2nd thoughts ❄️😒 maybe it's because Trump is literally making America weird again? 🤪 meanwhile, Miley Cyrus was all "I'm moving to Canada" just joking tho 😂 & Barbra Streisand is just straight up hating on him 💁‍♀️ but honestly, who can blame them? I mean, Courtney Love is already living her best life in London and becoming a Brit citizen 🇬🇧💖 it's all about being safe & comfortable, you feel?

I feel so bad for these celebs who are having second thoughts about leaving the UK. I mean, can you blame them? I'd want to escape this crazy winter too! 🤣 But at the same time, I get it - as a parent, I'd want my kids to be safe and happy wherever we live.

I'm actually kinda curious why some of these celebs are feeling the need to leave again. Like, is it just the politics or what? As a mum, I wish everyone could just find common ground and get along 🤗. And what about all the good things about America - can't they see that too?

I do love how people like Courtney Love have made their homes abroad and seem so determined to stay put though. That takes courage, you know? 💪 As a parent, it's amazing to see grown-ups stand up for what they believe in, even if it means leaving behind the familiarity of home.

But yeah, I can understand why some celebs might want to come back - safety and security are important, especially with kids. I'm just glad we have our own little bubble here that keeps us safe and happy 😊.

I'm so over this winter already! 🥶 I mean, can you blame Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi for wanting to escape the chill? As a student who's been dealing with cold weather all year, I know how exhausting it can be. But seriously, I feel bad for these celebs who are having second thoughts about living in the UK. It's like, we get it, Trump is no joke 🙄, and it's not just him – his policies and rhetoric are giving a lot of people anxiety. I've been following Courtney Love's story, and if she's considering becoming a British citizen, that says a lot. As for me, I'm good with the UK's gloomy weather – at least it keeps everyone indoors where it's warm and cozy! ☕

I feel for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, tbh 🤷‍♀️. Who wouldn't want to escape the cold and dreary UK winter? But at the same time, I'm not surprised they're having second thoughts – all that drama with Trump's presidency did make them look like they'd be outta there in a heartbeat 😂.

Miley Cyrus was just joking about moving to Canada (or Trumpland 🤣), but I get why people would want to escape the politics. And Courtney Love becoming a British citizen? Girl, she's been living in London for years and loves it – no surprise there 💁‍♀️.

I do feel bad for Rosie O'Donnell's family, though. Safety is everything, especially when you're non-binary 🌈. It's crazy how politics can affect our personal lives so much. But hey, at least they found a new home in Ireland!󠁧󠁢󠁧󠁣󠁴󠁿

And honestly, I'm just curious – are there really that many celebs itching to leave the UK? Or is it just a case of "Winter is coming" (ahem, Game of Thrones 🤯)?

I'm low-key surprised Ellen and Portia are having second thoughts about staying in the UK! I mean, I get it, Trump can be a bit much for some people 🤣, but I thought they were all about living their best lives abroad? Anyway, I think it's cool that Courtney Love is becoming a British citizen tho 💁‍♀️🇬🇧. And omg have you seen the weather forecast for the UK right now? ❄️😱 It's like, who needs that kind of drama in their life? 😂

I'm feeling kinda weird about this whole celebrity departure thing... I mean, think about it, they're basically running away from the reality of Trump's presidency 🤔. But at the same time, isn't it kinda true what they say? Like, if you don't like something, just leave, right? ✈️ It's almost like a metaphor for life itself – we can choose to stay in our comfort zones or take a leap of faith and see where else life takes us. But is that really an option for some people, especially when it comes to their personal safety? 🤷‍♀️ I don't know... maybe I'm just overthinking this whole thing... 😅

I feel bad for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, you know? They've got a lovely home in the UK and I'm sure they love it there 😊. But can't blame 'em if they're getting a bit nippy, haha! It's like when we have a cold spell here and I just want to stay under the blankets with a hot cuppa ☕️.

It's also kinda funny that some of these celebs were so sure they'd stick it out in the UK last year, but now they're reconsidering 🤔. Maybe it's just human nature to want what you've got when it gets cold outside? 🌡️

I do think it's interesting that some of them are actually moving abroad for good, though. Like Courtney Love - she's been in London for ages and seems super happy there 💕. And Ireland is a beautiful country, perfect for a family like Rosie O'Donnell's 👪.

But at the end of the day, I think it's just about finding what makes you happy, right? Whether that's living in the UK or somewhere else entirely 🌎.
