Emma Raducanu storms into Cluj semi-finals with win over Maja Chwalinska, Sonay Kartal beaten

Emma Raducanu, the British number one, stormed into the semi-finals of the Transylvania Open with a commanding victory over Poland's Maja Chwalinska. The 23-year-old, who is still seeking her first WTA title since winning the US Open in 2021, rushed through the first set without losing a game and never looked back.

Chwalinska, ranked 146th in the world, managed to stay in the match for a while, but Raducanu's form was too strong. She won the second set 6-0 before wrapping up the victory with a convincing win in the third set. The result marked Raducanu's fourth quarter-final appearance since her US Open triumph five years ago.

After the match, Raducanu expressed her happiness with her performance and praised her ability to overcome adversity during the match. "I'm very happy with my performance today," she said. "I played a great match from the beginning. As always there's some moments of adversity you have to overcome and I did that well in the second set, so I am really proud of that."

Raducanu will now face Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova in the semi-finals. Oliynykova, who saved 21 out of 23 break points against Chinese fourth seed Wang Xinyu to reach her first WTA Tour semi-final, is expected to give Raducanu a tough test.

Meanwhile, British number two Sonay Kartal suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Sara Bejlek in the Abu Dhabi Open quarter-finals. Kartal lost 10 consecutive games and was broken back after coming up midway through the second set. Bejlek won the match 6-0 6-2 to reach her first WTA Tour semi-final.

Kartal's loss marked her third straight quarter-final defeat, with her only victory coming in a tournament title win in 2024. She will need to regroup and refocus if she wants to make a deep run in the rest of the season.

she played really well today πŸŽΎπŸ‘ but chwalinska wasnt that bad lol πŸ˜‚ i mean, ranking isnt everything, but still gotta give raducanu props for her game πŸ‘

πŸ€” I was at that age when Emma Raducanu won the US Open 🎾, now she's back with some great form πŸ’ͺ! It's amazing how our game evolves as we get older, don't you think? We must have been young and hungry like her back then, trying to make a name for ourselves. Anyway, I'm glad to see she's still got it πŸ”₯... now let's see how she'll do against Oleksandra Oliynykova 🀞!

🀩 I'm loving Emma Raducanu's vibe right now! She's like a machine on the court, totally dominating her opponents. The fact that she can overcome adversity during matches is super impressive - it shows her mental strength and resilience. Can't wait to see how she takes on Oliynykova in the semis! πŸ’ͺ Also, sad to see Sonay Kartal struggling πŸ€• but we've all been there right? Time to bounce back and focus on the next tournament! πŸ‘

I gotta say, Emma Raducanu is looking like a total rockstar out there on the court 🀩! I mean, that semi-final win over Maja Chwalinska was just dominant - 6-0 in the second set? That's insane. She's got some serious skill and confidence going for her right now. And it's great to see her bounce back from adversity like she did in that match 🀝.

But, on a more serious note, I'm curious to see how she'll match up against Oleksandra Oliynykova in the semis. She's got some tough competition ahead of her for sure πŸ‘Š. Sonay Kartal's loss was pretty brutal, though - 10 consecutive games lost? That's not something you can just bounce back from quickly πŸ€•.

What I'm really excited about is Raducanu's growth as a player since that US Open win in 2021. She's got some serious momentum going for her right now and if she can keep it up, we might see some big things from her this season πŸŽ‰.

Yaaas πŸ™Œ Emma Raducanu is on FIRE πŸ”₯! I'm so stoked to see her dominating on court, especially after that tough start to the year. Maja Chwalinska put up a good fight, but Raducanu's game just took over 🀯. And can we talk about how proud she should be of herself? She's already thinking about overcoming adversity, which is the mark of a true champion πŸ’ͺ! Now, let's see if she can take down Oleksandra Oliynykova and make a deep run in this tournament... Fingers crossed 🀞!

πŸ€” I mean, Emma Raducanu is literally unstoppable right now! I know she's still chasing that first WTA title since US Open 2021, but her form is so strong πŸ™Œ. And Chwalinska can't be too mad about getting thrashed in the first set πŸ˜‚. It's not like she didn't give it a go though.

Sonay Kartal on the other hand needs to get back to basics...like, stat πŸ”„. Ten consecutive losses? That's just mental πŸ’”. Bejlek deserved that win imo πŸ‘. Kartal has some tough draws coming up but I still got faith in her she'll bounce back! 🌟

OMG, Emma Raducanu is on FIRE πŸš€πŸŽΎ! I mean, I was expecting her to have a tough time against Maja Chwalinska but she totally destroyed her 🀯. And now she's got a tough test ahead with Oleksandra Oliynykova in the semis... will she be able to pull it off? Fingers crossed for our girl! 😍

But, like, Sonay Kartal, huh? πŸ˜” 10 consecutive losses is just rough πŸ€•. She needs to regroup and refocus if she wants to make a comeback. Wish her the best, but it's looking tough right now... 😞

lol what's going on with kartal? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ 3 straight quarter-finals, 0 wins 😩 she needs a major overhaul in her game πŸ”„ maybe get some new coaches or something πŸ’‘ raducanu is looking strong tho, her form is insane πŸ”₯ but oliynykova better be ready, that girl's got skills πŸ•Ί

Raducanu's form is on fire πŸ”₯! I mean, the girl just dominated that match, it was like watching a pro πŸ™Œ. And 6-0 in the second set? Unbelievable πŸ’―. She's really showing why she won the US Open all those years ago πŸŽ‰.

Kartal's loss is a bit of a bummer though πŸ˜”. The girl had some promising results last year, but now it seems like she's hit a wall 🚧. Oliynykova's gonna give Raducanu a tough test, that's for sure πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to see how this semi-final goes down!

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s crazy how fast Raducanu is back on track after that injury layoff 🀯 Her form is just insane, and she's playing some of the best tennis of her life right now. And omg, Kartal's loss was like a total meltdown πŸ˜‚ 10 straight games losing? That's not something you see every day. Bejlek totally deserved to win that one πŸ’ͺ
