Europe is holding the line against Trump's and Putin's plans for Ukraine. But it won't be able to for ever | Martin Kettle

European Diplomacy on the Brink: Can Nato Hold the Line Against Putin and Trump's Plans for Ukraine?

The recent failure of peace talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff may signal that Europe is finally being recognized as a key obstacle to a Trump-backed deal with Russia over Ukraine. However, it remains to be seen whether this dynamic will remain entrenched, or if it will lead to a reevaluation of the US diplomatic effort.

The underlying logic driving these interactions has been consistent since Trump's return to office in January 2021. The US is unwilling to provide military aid to Ukraine, opting instead for a bilateral deal with Putin that would require Ukraine to cede territory to Russia. Meanwhile, Russia continues to bomb Ukraine and make incremental gains on the battlefield.

The EU response has been intense and largely successful, with most European nations committing to material support for post-war Ukraine. However, this coalition lacks the power to shape US-Russia plans, only able to wound them. The coalition's ability to frustrate Trump and Putin's plans has been notable, particularly in the aftermath of Trump's Oval Office visit with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Despite this success, Europe cannot sustain its efforts indefinitely. The fundamental issue is that it lacks sufficient military power and wealth to influence a new peace settlement with Russia and the US. The 21st-century imbalance of power has turned against them, leaving Europe struggling to keep the post-war idea of Western unity alive.

If Trump were to abandon his diplomatic effort tomorrow, Nato's capacity for self-criticism and self-correction would be severely tested. While they would retain their military strength and commitment to Ukraine, the strategic recalibration required of Europe could prove arduous and costly.

The stakes are rising, with Russia increasingly testing its military capabilities in eastern Europe. The threat to Kyiv's main street, Khreshchatyk, is real, and the frozen Russian assets worth £253bn pose a significant challenge for international backers. Ultimately, Nato's ability to adapt to this new reality will be crucial in determining the fate of Ukraine and Western unity.

As the situation evolves, one thing is clear: Europe's role in supporting Ukraine has been thrust into the spotlight. Can they continue to hold the line against Putin and Trump's plans for Ukraine? The world watches with bated breath as Europe struggles to find a way forward in this critical moment.

man i'm gettin worried about europe's situation right now 🤕 nato needs to step up their game and provide more military aid to ukraine ASAP! but at the same time, i feel like they're stuck between a rock and a hard place - if they give in to trump's demands, it'll be seen as a major betrayal, but if they keep resistin' and pushin' back, it could lead to even more conflict 🤯 what can't europe just use some creative problem-solvin' skills and come up with a new plan that involves everyone? 🤔

omg I'm so worried about Ukraine 🤕🌪️, I mean Europe has been trying its best but it's not an easy task, especially considering the military imbalance 😩, Trump's plans are like, super concerning for Ukraine's future 🚨, and Putin's actions are just awful 💔, what can Nato do to help? 🤔 I wish there was a way to get all the countries on the same page and work together to find a solution that doesn't involve anyone losing 🙏, it's not like they don't have enough problems already with climate change and stuff 🌡️, can't we just put our differences aside for once? 🤗 I'm just so sad about what's happening over there, please let's all keep Ukraine in our thoughts and prayers 💕

omg u think nato can hold on much harder than that 💪🏽🤯 they got trump & putin in a headlock and cant escape 😂 Putin's got more power than he thinks nato needs to step up their game tho 🚀💥 but tbh, europe is all about talk-talk-talk 🗣️ we need action not just empty promises 💸

I'm worried that Nato's lack of military power and wealth is going to be the death knell for Europe's efforts to support Ukraine 🤕. They're putting all their eggs in one basket, relying on diplomacy and economic pressure to take down Russia, but it's not working. Putin's been bombarding Ukraine left and right and it seems like Nato's just throwing money at the problem without any real plan to stop the bleeding 💸.

The thing is, Trump's diplomatic effort might be the only thing holding back a full-blown war in Eastern Europe 🤝. If he pulls out, I think we're going to see some serious chaos erupt. The frozen Russian assets are just the tip of the iceberg - there's tons of wealth and influence at stake here that could destabilize the entire region 💸.

Nato needs to get its act together, pronto! They need to find a way to pool their resources and come up with a real plan to take on Putin. This can't keep going on forever - Ukraine's people are getting killed every day, and it's only a matter of time before the whole thing spirals out of control 😱.

I'm not sure what Europe is waiting for - something big is coming, and they need to be ready 🕰️. They can't just keep playing defense against Russia's aggression; they need to take the fight to them. If Nato doesn't step up its game soon, I think we're looking at a whole lot more trouble down the line 😬

idk about this nato & trump thingy... seems like europe is being pulled in all directions 🤔. if they can't provide military aid to ukraine, how are they supposed to stop russia from taking over? and what's with the €253bn frozen russian assets? shouldn't that be seized by ukraine instead of just "challenging" russia's military capabilities? 🤑 i'm not buying all this talk about nato's ability to adapt... where's the proof? sources, pls! 💡

I dont think nato has much of a chance here 🤔. Theyre already struggling with their own internal issues, like reforming their defense system. Theres also this whole issue with some european countries not contributing enough to the fight against russia. Trumps plan for ukraine might actually be a blessing in disguise, it could force nato to step up its game and show that they can still hold their own. But if europe doesnt come together and support ukraine, then whats the point? 🤷‍♂️ The EU is good at talking, but when it comes down to it, they need to actually put their money where their mouth is 💸.

the EU thinks it can just keep backing Ukraine forever with its fancy words but what about the actual resources? Russia is gonna blow up Khreshchatyk whether Nato likes it or not and then where's the EU gonna be? 🤦‍♂️💥
