Federal authorities have charged a high-ranking New York Police Department (NYPD) sergeant with impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, according to an indictment released yesterday.
The suspect, Sgt. Atickul Islam, allegedly posed as the director of ICE's New York Field Office and deceived a family into reporting to an immigration facility in the city by April 15th. Authorities revealed that Islam made contact with the victim and their family in March, leading them to believe they were required to appear at an ICE facility.
Islam faces one count of false impersonation of an officer of the United States and could face significant penalties for his actions. However, it remains unclear what motivated him to undertake this scheme.
As a result of the allegations, Islam has been suspended from the NYPD without pay, according to department spokesperson Brad Weekes. The suspect's salary is reportedly $155,813, with a base wage of $105,606.
Islam's case is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday evening, although his attorney's information was not immediately available for comment. The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on the matter.
