Fenwick shocks East St. Louis to win the 6A state title

Fenwick Friars Shock Upset-Riddled East St. Louis Flyers to Win State Championship

In a thrilling matchup that saw several twists and turns, Fenwick's junior Jake Thies stole the show with two game-changing plays that propelled his team to a hard-fought 38-28 victory over heavily favored East St. Louis in the Class 6A state championship game.

Thies' first big play came in the third quarter when he burst through a gap and ran 74 yards for a touchdown, giving Fenwick its largest lead of the night. The Friars' defense then stiffened, holding off a late Flyers rally that saw East St. Louis score 10 points to cut the deficit to just eight.

The decisive blow came on the final play of the game when Thies intercepted an East St. Louis pass and set up a three-yard touchdown run by Jamen Williams with just seconds left, sealing the win for Fenwick.

For his heroics, Thies was beaming with pride after the game. "I was just trusting my speed," he said. "I knew once I got into the open field they weren’t going to catch me. It was a good play call. Coaches saw something. I found the gap and burst through."

Williams also had a stellar game, throwing for 155 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 39 yards and another score.

Fenwick's coach Matt Battaglia praised his team's resilience, saying "It helps when you have a great team around you." He also lavished praise on Thies, calling him "a great player" whose play was impossible to ignore.

Not so fortunate were the Flyers, who struggled with turnovers and mental mistakes that their opponents capitalized on. East St. Louis quarterback Reece Shanklin threw for 158 yards but also tossed two interceptions, while running back Myson Johnson-Cook rushed for 181 yards but couldn't lead his team to victory.

For the Flyers' coach Darren Sunkett, the loss was tough to swallow. "A ton of mental mistakes on our part," he said. "Turnovers on our part. They took advantage of our mistakes and capitalized on them."

The win marked Fenwick's first state championship since 2021 and its third in school history.

OMG, I am beyond hyped for Fenwick Friars!!! 🀩 Jake Thies is a total game-changer! That last-minute TD run by Jamen Williams was insane πŸ’₯🏈 I'm so proud of the team for never giving up and playing with heart πŸ’– Matt Battaglia is one lucky coach to have such an amazing squad behind him 😊 The Flyers put up a great fight, but East St. Louis just couldn't keep up πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Reece Shanklin and Myson Johnson-Cook are talented players, but mistakes cost them the game πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Can't wait to see what the future holds for Fenwick! πŸ’«

I mean, think about it... what does this say about the state of youth sports? I mean, East St Louis is supposed to be one of the top programs, but they get taken down by a team like Fenwick that's expected to be a dark horse. It's like the whole system is rigged, you know? The top teams always seem to be favored, and it's hard for the underdogs to break through.

And what about the mental game, right? I mean, East St Louis had all these turnovers and mental mistakes that cost them the game. That's what happens when you don't have a solid system in place, when you're not teaching your kids how to stay focused under pressure. It's like, no wonder they couldn't compete with Fenwick.

And then there's Thies' play... it's like he single-handedly changed the outcome of the game. Is that what we want in sports? To have one player make all the difference? I mean, I know it's awesome to see a kid shine like that, but at the same time, it raises questions about the importance of teamwork and strategy.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is... this game just highlights some bigger issues with our youth sports system. We need to be looking at how we can support underdog teams and give them a fair shot. Otherwise, we're just gonna keep seeing games like this where one team dominates the other. πŸ€”

Ugh, come on πŸ™„! How can you have a Class 6A state championship game where the winner is only down by 10 points with like 2 minutes to go?! That's just crazy! πŸ˜‚ The Flyers were so close, but those turnovers and mental mistakes killed them for sure. And Thies' interception return at the end was just lucky, TBH πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Can't a team just get one break? It's like, Fenwick got some great plays from their defense, but East St. Louis had plenty of chances to win it too... it's all so frustrating! 😑

omg what a game!!! 😲 fenwick's jake thies is literally the man 🀩 he came up with those huge plays and just destroyed it πŸ’₯ i mean east st louis was supposed to win that one for sure πŸ€” but fenwick's defense held strong and thies made some insane runs πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ and jamsen williams was on fire too πŸ”₯ 38-28 is a crazy score though lol what a game πŸ‘

omg can u believe fenwick friars pulled off that crazy upset? jake thies was INSANE πŸ”₯🏈 his 74 yard run for a touchdown was game-changing! and that last play where he intercepted the pass and set up jamen williams' winning score? 🀯 i'm still on the edge of my seat just thinking about it. fenwick's coach matt battaglia should be so proud of his team, they showed so much heart and resilience. sorry east st louis flyers, u got game but fenwick came out on top this time 😊

OMG 🀯, this game was literally insane! I'm still reeling from the upset 🀯. East St. Louis was supposed to be a shoe-in for that championship, but Fenwick just came out on top πŸ’ͺ. Thies' plays were CRAZY πŸ”₯, especially that 74-yard sprint πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ. And can we talk about how clutch Williams was? Two touchdowns and a score in the final seconds? ⚑️

But what really gets me is how Fenwick's team came together to outsmart East St. Louis πŸ€“. The coaches made some smart calls, and it paid off big time πŸ’Έ. And let's not forget about Thies' interception - pure perfection 🎯! This kid's got the skills 🌟.

As for East St. Louis, they just couldn't seem to get anything going πŸ˜”. Turnovers and mental mistakes cost them the game πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, you can't deny the Flyers had some chances, but Fenwick just kept them at bay πŸ”’. It's gonna be tough for them to bounce back from this one πŸ’”.

Fenwick's win is an amazing story for their fans πŸŽ‰! The school hasn't had a championship since 2021, so this must mean the world to them 🌟. And let's not forget about Thies' heroics - he's gonna be remembered as a legend in no time πŸ’₯!

idk about this, sounds like a fluke to me πŸ€”. East St Louis was heavily favored for a reason, so it feels like they got lucky πŸ˜…. I'm not buying that Thies just "trusted his speed" on those big plays πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ... there's gotta be more to it than that πŸ’‘. And what's with all the turnovers? if they can't even keep the ball for a quarter, how's that gonna take them far in the future? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

awww man, that's amazing for Fenwick! πŸ™Œ they were so down but Thies and his team came through in the clutch. it's crazy how one play can change everything, like that 74-yard run in the 3rd quarter was insane 😲. and congrats to Jamen Williams too, he had an incredible game. πŸŽ‰ I'm sure East St Louis will be back stronger next year, but for now, Fenwick gets to celebrate their state championship win πŸ†πŸ’ͺ

I'm low-key shocked by this upset, especially considering the odds were against Fenwick 🀯🏈. Their team dynamic seems to be all about supporting each other, which paid off big time with Thies' game-changing plays πŸ˜‚. The way East St Louis's turnovers and mental mistakes cost them is a good reminder that sports can be unpredictable πŸ”„. It's awesome for Fenwick that they're back on top after a few years out πŸ‘‘. And credit to coach Battaglia for building a resilient team – it makes all the difference in moments like this πŸ’ͺ.

omg u guys fenwick friars are insane !! jake thies is a total hero with those 2 game-changing plays 🀯πŸ’₯ i was literally on the edge of my seat when he burst through that gap for that 74 yard touchdown πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ!! and jamen williams' 3-yard touchdown run at the end was pure clutch πŸ”₯πŸ‘ fenwick's coach matt battaglia said it all "it helps when you have a great team around you" indeed!!! they really showed resilience and teamwork out there πŸ’ͺπŸ”΄

OMG, what a game!! 🀯 I'm still in shock that East St Louis lost to Fenwick! 😱 Thies is literally a superhero, his 2 big plays sealed the deal for them. And Williams had an amazing game too! πŸ™Œ I was on the edge of my seat when it all went down. Mental mistakes from East St Louis are just heartbreaking. πŸ’” Guess you gotta learn from your losses to come back stronger next year. Congrats to Fenwick on their first state championship since 2021, that's so sweet for them! πŸŽ‰

omg this kid Jake Thies is a total game changer 🀯 he ran like 74 yards for a touchdown mind blown! 🏈 i'm so happy for the kids on the field they deserved it after all that hard work & perseverance their coaches must be super proud too coach Battaglia said it all - having a great team around you makes all the difference πŸ‘«πŸ’ͺ

omg can't believe fenwick won the state championship 🀯 i mean east st louis was favs by like 10 points or something but that jake thies dude is a total game changer his speed is insane πŸ’¨ he single handedly took it to the flyers and sealed the win for fenwick. tho, gotta say, east st louis had some major mental fumbles πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ if they'd just held on for like 2 more min they probably woulda won. anyway congrats to fenwick on their first state championship since 2021 πŸ‘

I gotta say, the whole thing just didn't sit right with me... like those game-changing plays by Thies, yeah they were sick but what about East St. Louis having way more talent on their team? I mean, Myson Johnson-Cook rushed for 181 yards and Reece Shanklin threw for 158 yards, that's no joke! And they still ended up losing. The turning point was a bit too convenient with Thies just "bursting through" the gap... sounds like some Hollywood script to me πŸ˜’. Plus, where was East St. Louis' defense when it really mattered? They got torched by the Flyers all game and couldn't stop them from scoring. It's not fair that Fenwick gets all the credit for their win πŸ€”.

this is insane fenwick's jake thies is a total game changer πŸ’₯ his speed is unreal i mean 74 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter is just ridiculous, but what's even crazier is how he was able to intercept that last pass and seal the deal 🀯 east st louis had some major mental mistakes throughout the game, turnovers and all, it's clear they weren't as prepared as fenwick was coach battaglia must be so proud of his team for staying focused and not giving up on their chances πŸ’ͺ

ugh, great job to fenwick friars, I guess πŸ™„... those two plays by thies were INSANE, but like, not surprising at all lol. coach battaglia needs to work on his post-game interviews though, "a great team around you" is soooo generic πŸ˜’. and east st louis was just having a super bad game, turnover after turnover, mental mistakes galore... cant blame them for getting upset πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ but still, fenwick deserved it more or less. congrats to thies on his "heroics" πŸ‘

This sports victory has got me thinking about teamwork and perseverance 🏈πŸ’ͺ. It's clear that Jake Thies had a huge impact on the game, but his teammates played a crucial role too! Jamen Williams' stellar performance wasn't just about individual skill, it was also about how he worked with others to get the job done.

And I gotta say, East St Louis's struggles with turnovers and mental mistakes were like watching a cautionary tale - you can be so close to victory, but it all falls apart if you don't stay focused πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. It's actually really inspiring to see how Fenwick's coach praised his team for resilience, because that's what sports is all about - learning from your mistakes and coming back stronger πŸ’•.

I love how this championship win is like a reminder that even the underdog can rise to the occasion 🐾πŸ’₯! Okay, I'm done gushing... but seriously, Fenwick Friars are my new heroes 😊.
