Fort Bend ISD estimates it could lose $7.8M due to the new voucher program

New School Voucher Program Sparks Financial Concerns for Fort Bend ISD

Fort Bend Independent School District (ISD) officials are estimating that the new school voucher program could result in a significant financial loss of up to $7.8 million, according to recently obtained documents. The district has faced declining enrollment in recent years and is now considering closing as many as seven elementary schools due to this decline.

Parent John Strader, whose child attends Austin Parkway Elementary School, one of the schools at risk, expressed his concern over the potential closure. "It seems that they're setting things up to say that they just can't afford it," he said. The school's principal has been with the school for 13 years, and several teachers have worked there for over 20 years.

The district is facing a decline in enrollment due to various factors, including the new voucher program. According to estimates, Fort Bend ISD could lose around 780 students to the voucher program, resulting in a significant financial impact. The estimated loss would be equivalent to approximately 1% of the district's current enrollment of about 78,000 students.

While Fort Bend ISD is sharing its estimates regarding the vouchers, other districts have not disclosed their own budget projections. A public workshop will be held next week to discuss school boundaries, and a vote on possible closures is expected to take place in next month.

Some parents are already considering removing their children from the district by applying for the state's new voucher program. Strader, who has been actively speaking at board meetings and protesting, mentioned that he is looking into possibly homeschooling or private schooling for his children.

Ugh, this is so sad... I mean, I get why they're trying to cut costs and whatnot, but 7 schools closing? That's like, a whole community being torn apart 🤕. And it's not just the kids who are affected, either - all those dedicated teachers and staff members who've been working there for years... it's like, goodbye, 13-year principal! 👋 What really gets me is that parents are already starting to make plans to pull their kids out of the district because of the voucher program. Like, what's next? Are we just gonna abandon our schools altogether and let them get taken over by private companies? 🚫 That would be a tragedy.

Ugh I just can't believe what's happening with our schools 🤦‍♀️! They're closing schools like it's nobody's business and now they're telling us that the voucher program is going to cost them 7.8 million dollars?! That's insane! 😱 It's no wonder parents are freaking out, I mean who wouldn't want their kid to lose a school with a principal who's been there for 13 years? 🤔 The district should at least try to find ways to keep those schools open, but instead they're just going along with it... it's so frustrating! 😡

I'm getting a bit worried about this school voucher program in Fort Bend ISD... 🤔 They're basically cutting their own nose off with this one - losing 780 students would be huge, and it's going to affect the schools badly. I can see why John Strader is stressing out - his kid goes to one of the schools that could close! It's not just about the money (although $7.8 million is a lot), it's about the impact on the community. All these years, the principal and teachers have been working hard at Austin Parkway Elementary, and now they're being told they might have to close? 😱 It's heartbreaking.

I'm not sure why other districts aren't sharing their budget projections... does that mean they're also hiding something? 🤑 The lack of transparency is what's really getting my goat here. We need more info on how these voucher programs are going to affect schools in the long run. Can we trust that it'll all work out okay for everyone involved? 🤷‍♀️

I don't usually comment but... have you guys noticed how fast schools can turn around when they're not facing financial struggles? Like, one day they're all about providing education and the next, it's "we're gonna close some schools to save money". It just feels so abrupt. I get that districts are trying to adapt to changing circumstances, but shouldn't we be doing something to support these kids instead of just cutting costs?

I'm thinking about our own school system here and how we've been dealing with funding issues for years. It's always the same story - cuts, layoffs, more cuts... Meanwhile, parents are having to scramble to find alternative options for their kids. I don't think it's fair that some families have to resort to homeschooling or private schools because of budget constraints.

I'd love to hear from some folks who live in Fort Bend ISD - how do you guys feel about this? Do you think the district is doing everything they can to support its students, or are there other factors at play? 🤔

🤔 I'm really worried about this school voucher program - it seems like a recipe for disaster for our local schools 🚨. First of all, Fort Bend ISD is already facing a financial strain due to declining enrollment, and now they're estimating that the vouchers could cost them up to $7.8 million 💸. That's a lot of money to lose, especially when you consider that it's equivalent to 1% of their current student population 📊.

And what really concerns me is that we don't know how much other districts are going to be affected by this program either... are they just going to sit back and let their students get taken away without saying anything? I think not! 🙅‍♂️ Parents like John Strader are already taking action, speaking out at board meetings and protesting the closures. He's even considering homeschooling or private schooling for his kids - that's a lot of work and expense just to keep them safe in a school system they trust.

It's hard to see what's happening here as anything other than a huge gamble with our students' futures 🤝. Do we really want to be the ones responsible for deciding which schools get funding, or which kids get left behind? I don't think so... this whole thing just feels like a mess waiting to happen 😬.

the way this whole voucher system is set up is just super concerning 🤯. like, schools are already struggling to make ends meet due to funding issues, and now we're gonna add this new layer of uncertainty where students might be leaving because their parents think it's a better deal elsewhere? 🤑 it's like, what about the actual kids stuck in the district who don't have those options? do they just get left behind? 🤔

OMG u guys!!! 🤯 I cant even believe what's happening in Fort Bend ISD! 🤕 They're considering closing 7 elementary schools because of the new voucher program?! That's just heartbreaking, especially with all the teachers who've been there for so long 🤗 The principal has 13 years experience and the teachers have over 20 years... can u imagine if they just shut down like that?! 🚫 It's not just about the school itself, it's about the kids and their families too! 💔 I'm literally shaking thinking about all the parents who might have to look into homeschooling or private schooling because of this 😱 How are we supposed to know what's going on if they're not sharing their budget projections?! 🤷‍♀️ It's like, where's the transparency?! We need to keep fighting for these kids and make sure our schools stay open! 💪

😱 this can't be happening! our schools are getting cut already... what's next? 🤕 7 elementary schools closing?! 💔 those teachers have dedicated their lives to educating our kids... don't they deserve some support?! 🙏 my heart goes out to John Strader and all the parents affected by this decision 🤗
