New School Voucher Program Sparks Financial Concerns for Fort Bend ISD
Fort Bend Independent School District (ISD) officials are estimating that the new school voucher program could result in a significant financial loss of up to $7.8 million, according to recently obtained documents. The district has faced declining enrollment in recent years and is now considering closing as many as seven elementary schools due to this decline.
Parent John Strader, whose child attends Austin Parkway Elementary School, one of the schools at risk, expressed his concern over the potential closure. "It seems that they're setting things up to say that they just can't afford it," he said. The school's principal has been with the school for 13 years, and several teachers have worked there for over 20 years.
The district is facing a decline in enrollment due to various factors, including the new voucher program. According to estimates, Fort Bend ISD could lose around 780 students to the voucher program, resulting in a significant financial impact. The estimated loss would be equivalent to approximately 1% of the district's current enrollment of about 78,000 students.
While Fort Bend ISD is sharing its estimates regarding the vouchers, other districts have not disclosed their own budget projections. A public workshop will be held next week to discuss school boundaries, and a vote on possible closures is expected to take place in next month.
Some parents are already considering removing their children from the district by applying for the state's new voucher program. Strader, who has been actively speaking at board meetings and protesting, mentioned that he is looking into possibly homeschooling or private schooling for his children.
