Freezing reptile dubbed ‘Lizard in a blizzard’ is rescued after being buried in Rhode Island snow

A Lizard Buries Itself Alive: Tegu Reptile Rescued from Rhode Island Snowbank

In a bizarre and heart-wrenching tale, a massive cold-blooded reptile was discovered buried in the snow of Rhode Island, with its survival a testament to the resilience of some creatures. A Providence resident stumbled upon the enormous tegu lizard while walking his driveway on Tuesday, sparking an unprecedented rescue operation.

The unlikely hero turned out to be ET Reptiles, a local store specializing in exotic pets, which swooped in to assist the distressed reptile. The creature's fragile state necessitated immediate medical attention, as it was found "extremely weak, underweight, and not moving well" by veterinarians at an animal hospital.

The lizard's ordeal was compounded by prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, which had resulted in frostbite on its tongue and debilitating muscle weakness. In the end, a small portion of its tongue had to be amputated as part of its recovery plan, a critical step towards saving this extraordinary creature.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the New England Wildlife Center and ET Reptiles, the rescuers are cautiously optimistic about the reptile's prospects for survival. The center revealed in a social media update that "he is now resting comfortably and finally warm, which makes all the difference!" As medical professionals continue to monitor its progress, everyone involved remains deeply invested in the recovery of this remarkable "lizard in a blizzard."

It's wild how it managed to survive that long without anyone noticing until now. The whole rescue operation was so cool, I love how the local pet store stepped in to help out. And yeah, losing a bit of tongue isn't ideal, but at least it can still live its best life 😂. It's amazing to see how dedicated the team at New England Wildlife Center is – they really care about those animals. Fingers crossed for this little guy's full recovery 🤞.

OMG, can you even imagine finding something like this outside? 🤯 It's crazy how the cold weather can affect animals, right? I mean, that little guy was in so bad shape, it's amazing the rescuers were able to save him. The fact that they had to amputate a part of his tongue is wild... but at least he's on the road to recovery now 😊. It just goes to show how resilient some animals can be, even when faced with extreme conditions ❄️. Fingers crossed for this little guy, though - I'm sure we're all rooting for him 🤞!

Omg, who knew lizards could survive snowbank ordeals like that?! 🤯🐢 I mean, kudos to ET Reptiles for stepping up and saving its life! Their efforts are truly heroic. And the vet work? Insane! The part about amputating a small portion of its tongue... yikes 😷. But seriously, this little guy's survival story is giving me all the feels 🐢❤️. I'm glad to see the New England Wildlife Center and ET Reptiles working together for his recovery. Fingers crossed he makes a full comeback! 🤞

OMG, can u believe this 🐢😱? I mean, I've heard of animals being resilient before, but this is just crazy! A lizard gets buried in snow and still manages to survive... it's like something out of a sci-fi movie. And the part where they had to amputate a piece of its tongue because of frostbite? That's just wild 🤯. I'm so glad that the New England Wildlife Center and ET Reptiles were able to step in and save this guy - it's amazing what people can do when they come together for a good cause 🙏. Anyway, fingers crossed that this little guy makes a full recovery and gets back to its natural habitat soon 🌴💚

I'm literally shaking just reading about this poor guy. I mean, who knew lizards could survive in snow? It's insane! They gotta be so cold-blooded or something 🤯😂. I'm glad those animal rescue folks were there to save it, that's some seriously good karma. And amputating a part of its tongue? That's wild 😳. I just hope it recovers fully, it'd be such a shame if it didn't make it 🐢💔.

🐢😬 gotta feel bad for that poor lizard, been through way too much already... freezing temps, snowbank, and now they're gonna lose a part of its tongue 🤕 hope it pulls thru tho, kinda crazy it's still alive 🌟

This story sounds fishy 🐟. I mean, come on, a lizard just waltzes into a snowbank and gets buried? That's like saying a cat jumps into a bathtub by accident. I'm not buying it 😂. And what's with the store jumping into action to rescue this guy? It doesn't exactly sound like altruism to me... where's the vet bill gonna come from? Also, didn't they just say the lizard was "extremely weak" and needed medical attention, but then somehow gets amputated on a whim? Sounds like an animal hoarding situation to me 🤔. Where are the pics of this rescue op? And what exactly did we learn from this ordeal about reptiles' survival skills in snowbanks?
