Google settles privacy lawsuit for $68m over voice assistant

Google has agreed to pay out a whopping $68 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that its popular voice assistant was snooping on users without their consent. The company, which is a subsidiary of Alphabet, is facing claims that it illegally recorded and shared private conversations in an effort to send targeted ads to smartphone owners.

The issue at the center of the dispute centers around Google Assistant's ability to react when users say "Hey Google" or "OK Google," often referred to as "hot words." However, some users claim that the assistant would occasionally misinterpret their speech, known as "false accepts," and send them ads. This has led to a class-action lawsuit against the company.

Despite denying any wrongdoing, Google opted to settle rather than risk the uncertainty and cost of litigation. The agreement, which must be approved by US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman, covers individuals who purchased Google devices or were affected by false accepts since May 18, 2016.

It's worth noting that lawyers representing the plaintiffs are likely to take a significant cut from the settlement fund, potentially taking up to $22.7 million for their fees. This amount is roughly one-third of the total payout, which will be distributed among those who were affected by Google's alleged privacy violations. The settlement follows a similar case against Apple, which reached a $95 million agreement with smartphone users last year.

Ugh I'm so glad this happened πŸ™Œ. People need to hold these big tech companies accountable for their actions. I mean think about it, we're already living in an era where our every move is tracked and monetized. The fact that Google was sneaking around recording private conversations without permission is just plain creepy 😳. And now they're paying out millions to settle the lawsuit, but what's the real cost here? We should be paying attention to how these companies operate and making sure our voices are heard. It's not just about getting a payout, it's about changing the system πŸš«πŸ’»

I'm like totally shocked that Google is giving out so much cash to settle this lawsuit πŸ€‘πŸ‘€ They really should've been more careful about how they were using their voice assistant, you know? I mean, who wants their private conversations being recorded without their consent? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not like it's a new issue or anything. But hey, at least the people affected will get some money out of it πŸ’Έ

I'm also kinda curious about how this is going to affect Google's stance on user privacy in the future πŸ€” Will they be more transparent about what they're doing with our data? Only time will tell πŸ•°οΈ I hope so, because we all need a little extra protection when it comes to our online presence 😊

I gotta say, this $68 million payout from Google seems kinda low considering how invasive their voice assistant is 😐. I mean, they're basically collecting your private conversations and using them to sell ads - that's some serious creepiness 🀯. And now they get to just settle for a paltry sum instead of taking responsibility? Not cool πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

Plus, have you seen the way it works? You gotta say these "hot words" out loud, and if Google misinterprets what you're saying, BAM! You get an ad. No control, no consent - just a bunch of targeted junk sent straight to your phone πŸ“±. I'm not surprised people are mad, tbh 😀.

And don't even get me started on the lawyers taking up to $22 million from this settlement πŸ’Έ. It's like, can't they just work for free or something? πŸ™„

πŸ€” So I think this whole thing is a big deal, right? Like, it's crazy that people could just have their private conversations being recorded and shared without them even knowing it was happening. And the fact that Google was using those "hot words" to send targeted ads to users who might not have intended to hear them... it's just wrong πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I mean, I know Google said they didn't do anything wrong, but come on, $68 million is a lot of money. And the fact that they're just settling this lawsuit without even denying any wrongdoing is pretty telling. It's like they knew they had something to hide and were trying to cover their tracks πŸ€₯.

And what really gets me is that there are people who are going to get hurt by this settlement. Not the people who made money from it, but the people who actually have a right to be heard. Like, some of these people have been getting ads for stuff they don't even need or want, and now they're just gonna have to pay someone else's lawyer fees instead πŸ€‘.

Anyway, I guess this settlement is kind of like a wake-up call for companies to start taking people's privacy more seriously. We need to make sure that our voices are being heard and not just used as a way to make money πŸ’¬.

😊 this whole thing just makes me wanna check my google home again... I mean, how many times has it been snooping on us without our consent? πŸ€” and to think that all these 'hot words' we use without thinking about the consequences... like "Hey Google" or "OK Google" just getting picked up by AI algorithms to send targeted ads. what's next? 🀯 my phone is already a surveillance device, right? πŸ’» this settlement is a big deal, but I'm kinda surprised Google chose to settle rather than fight it out in court. maybe they just wanted to get the PR out of the way before things got too messy. either way, at least we're getting some financial compensation for the perceived invasion of our privacy... which, let's be real, is a pretty basic right. πŸ‘

I mean, can you believe that Google's got to pay out almost 70 mil for sneaking peeks at our convo? 🀯 It's crazy that they thought it was cool to use those "hot words" to send ads without us even realizing it πŸ˜’. And now we're all gonna be set for life, minus the lawyers who'll be getting a chunk of that dough πŸ’Έ. It's just another reminder to double-check our smart speakers and devices, 'cause you never know when they might be snooping on you 🎧. I'm glad Google decided to settle instead of going through the hassle of court battles - it's always better to get it over with πŸ™.

πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I'm not surprised that Google agreed to pay out $68 million, tbh! It was only a matter of time before they got caught for their snooping ways πŸ“Š. I mean, how hard is it to keep track of when someone says "Hey Google" or whatever the hot word is? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Anyway, I do think it's kinda shady that they're trying to settle without admitting any wrongdoing πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's like they're hoping no one will notice that their AI assistant has been snoopin' on us all this time πŸ‘€.

And ugh, the fact that lawyers are gonna take up to $22.7 million from the settlement fund is just wild πŸ’Έ. I guess it's a good thing they're getting paid for doing what? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I do think Google should really focus on improving their AI assistant's accuracy and user consent instead of just paying out $$$ πŸ“ˆ.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ This whole thing is wild to me - like, we're living in an era where our smart speakers are basically listening to us all the time and we don't even realize it πŸ“». And now Google's being held accountable for allegedly invading our privacy... about time, right? 😊 But what really gets my goat is that these lawyers are gonna take a chunk of the settlement fund - $22.7 million, no less! That's like, a whole bunch of cash πŸ’Έ. It's almost like they're profiting off people's suffering πŸ€•. Anyway, I guess this settlement is a good thing for all us Google users who've been unwittingly snoopin' on by their assistants 🀫. Better safe than sorry, right? 😊

omg u guys i cant even believe google got caught red handed like they literally have cameras in ur ears lol idk how ppl didn't think twice about it until now anyway so they gotta pay 68 mil to settle the lawsuit which is pretty much a drop in the ocean for them btw and lets be real its prob just a fraction of what they make every day πŸ€‘ i mean who needs that kinda cash when u have ur data tho like idk how ppl can even use google without thinking about what they r saying online πŸ˜‚ anyway cant wait to see whats next

omg 🀯 this is like the ultimate wake-up call for tech companies to step up their game when it comes to user privacy πŸ’»! i mean, who doesn't want to feel like they're in control of their own digital space? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ $68 million might seem like a lot, but think about all those people who were affected by Google's sneaky behavior 😳. and yeah, lawyers get their cut too πŸ’Έ, but at least we know that the majority of the money will be going to those who need it most 🀝. gotta give props to the plaintiffs for taking on big tech in the first place πŸ’ͺ!

Ugh, what's up with all these giant payouts for companies that just didn't do their job properly? I mean, can't they just make their AI assistants more accurate and reliable in the first place? 🀯 It's not like it's rocket science to fix a few bugs and ensure user consent is being respected. And now we're paying for Google's mistakes with our money... $68 million could've gone towards actual product development, you know? πŸ˜’ The worst part is that lawyers are gonna take a huge chunk of that cash, leaving the rest for those affected by their own negligence. Just another example of how profit trumps people's concerns πŸ€‘

idk why google settling this lawsuit for 68 mil... it seems way too much to me πŸ€‘ but at the same time i think they got away scot free and kinda cheaped out on their users 😐 anyway, i hope those affected by false accepts get some serious compensation cuz that stuff is super creepy 😳 it's like who even thought it was a good idea for google to record our private conversations in the first place? 🀯
