Green Day to Open Super Bowl with Anniversary Ceremony Celebrating NFL Legends
In a unique move, the National Football League (NFL) is marking its 60th Super Bowl anniversary with an opening ceremony featuring Green Day, one of the most iconic punk-rock bands of all time. On February 8, Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, will host a special tribute to six decades of Super Bowl history, as the band performs alongside generations of NFL MVPs who have shaped the game.
The trio, consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, is set to take the stage ahead of Charlie Puth's performance of the national anthem, Brandi Carlile's rendition of "America the Beautiful," and Coco Jones' delivery of "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Green Day's performance will feature a selection of their most recognizable anthems as part of the ceremony.
"We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!" Armstrong exclaimed. "We are honored to welcome the MVPs who've shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let's have fun! Let's get loud!"
According to Tim Tubito, the league's senior director of event and game presentation, the opening ceremony is an ideal way to kick off Super Bowl LX. "Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL legends who've helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to start the big game," he said.
