Greg Brown, Founding Cake Guitarist Who Wrote 'The Distance,' Has Died

Beloved Alternative Rock Guitarist Greg Brown Dead at Age

Greg Brown, the founding guitarist and key songwriter behind influential alternative rock band Cake, has passed away after a brief illness. The news was announced by the band on social media, with a heartfelt message paying tribute to Brown's immense creative contributions and presence within the band.

Brown joined Cake in 1991 alongside singer John McCrea, multi-instrumentalist Vince DiFiore, and others. While McCrea served as the primary songwriter, Brown co-wrote tracks for the band's early albums 'Motorcade of Generosity' (1994) and 'Fashion Nugget' (1996), with one of his most notable contributions being the hit single 'The Distance.' Released in 1996, 'The Distance' became a massive success, solidifying Cake's place in the alternative rock scene.

In an interview with Billboard in 2021, Brown discussed the creation of 'The Distance,' saying that McCrea took to it right away but he didn't fully understand what McCrea saw in the song. Despite this, Brown acknowledged his admiration for McCrea's taste and ultimately accepted the band's choice to release 'The Distance' as their single.

Brown left Cake following the tour supporting 'Fashion Nugget,' citing turmoil within the group and a decision that would benefit his health. He went on to pursue other musical endeavors, including forming his own band Deathray with fellow former Cake member Victor Damiani on bass. Additionally, Brown contributed to Weezer's side project Homie, playing on their single "American Girls."

In recent years, Brown reunited with Cake for a solo stint as guitarist on the 2011 album 'Showroom of Compassion.' The news of his passing marks a loss not only for Cake but also for fans worldwide who have cherished Brown's unique guitar work and contributions to alternative rock.

πŸ˜” just saw this news about Greg Brown 🎸🎢 I'm so sad... he was such an iconic part of Cake's sound, you know? πŸ™ 'The Distance' is still one of my fave songs ever 🀩 always loved how the guitar riffs complemented John McCrea's vocals πŸ’• I'm gonna miss seeing Greg's face in old concert vids and hearing his playing style 🎸 rest in peace πŸ˜”

ugh, this is sad πŸ€• I remember listening to Cake's music back in the day and loving 'The Distance' - it's crazy that Greg Brown is no longer with us πŸ’” I've always thought his guitar playing was underrated, but now I get why people say he was the glue that held the band together 🀝 sadly, I don't think about these kinds of losses enough... maybe I'll have to go back and listen to some Cake again 😊

πŸ˜”πŸŽΈ Oh noooo, another legend gone too soon... Greg Brown was like the guitar superhero of alternative rock! I mean, have you seen those fingers on that axe? 🀯 He brought a whole new level of awesomeness to 'The Distance' and let's be real, who didn't love singing along to that catchy tune? 🎡 But seriously, 25 is way too young... it's like the world lost its best guitar-playing friend 😒.

Man I'm shook πŸ€•... just heard about Greg Brown's passing 😒. That guy was such an underrated talent, you know? People always talked about John McCrea's vocals, but Greg's guitar work on 'The Distance' is what really took that song to the next level 🎸. He might've left Cake after a few years, but his legacy lives on in all the bands he collaborated with 🀘 - Weezer, Deathray, Homie... the dude was a true original 🌟. I remember seeing Cake live back in '97 and Greg's guitar playing just blew me away 😲. What a loss for music fans everywhere πŸ’”

ugh I'm still trying to get into cake 🀯 I've heard they're like a one-hit wonder or something... do you think 'the distance' is their most popular song? 🎸 i mean, it's super catchy but i don't know if it's as good as some of the other songs by weezer... and what's up with cake being so influential in alternative rock? is that even a thing now? πŸ€” anyway, sorry about greg brown... he sounds like an awesome guitarist 😒

🀣 Sorry to hear that Greg Brown is gone, he was always rocking out in the background πŸ˜‚. I mean, 'The Distance' still gives me chills to this day, that guitar riff is like a time machine back to 90s alt-rock πŸ•°οΈ. But for real though, it's sad to see him go, he was an underrated dude πŸ€“. Cake's music will live on, and who knows, maybe Greg Brown's ghost will start jamming with Weezer again πŸ‘»πŸŽΈ. On a lighter note, I wonder what Deathray's next album will be like... "Greg's Gone, But the Riffs Remain" πŸ˜‚.

man I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 🀯 Greg Brown was more than just the guitarist in Cake, he was like the heartbeat of the band, you know? all these years I've been thinking that there was something fishy about him leaving Cake, it's not just that he said he needed time for his health, I think he might've been trying to get out of some drama within the band πŸ€” I mean, have you seen those interviews with McCrea where he talks about Brown taking a song to the band and they all just ran with it? it's like they were hiding something from us 🎸

man this is sad news... πŸ€• i'm still in shock, gotta give it up for Greg Brown - what a talented guitarist 🎸 he brought so much depth to cake's sound and that riff from 'the distance' still gives me chills πŸ”₯ anyone who grew up on alternative rock can't help but feel this loss πŸ’” his passing is a reminder of the transience of life, even in an era where we're constantly connected online πŸ“±

just got the sad news about Greg Brown πŸ€•, he was an iconic part of cake's sound and i'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he's gone. like, remember 'the distance'? how they managed to make a song with just one chord progression sound so epic? that was definitely brown's thing 🎸. anyway, it's crazy to think about how he left cake in 1997 and went on to do his own thang... and now we're saying goodbye 🎢.

OMG I'm still in shock 😱😒 this is such sad news... Greg Brown was an amazing guitarist and songwriter, his music brought so much joy and energy to the alternative rock scene 🀟🎸 his legacy will live on through Cake's discography and all the incredible songs he helped create πŸ’• especially "The Distance" which still gives me chills every time I listen to it 😍🎢 Sending love and condolences to John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, and the entire Cake fam πŸ€—πŸ’—

I don’t usually comment but I just saw this and gotta say... Greg Brown was such an underrated talent 🀯. People always talk about John McCrea, which is cool, but Brown brought that special sauce to Cake's sound, you know? 'The Distance' is a classic for a reason 😎. I loved how he talked about McCrea taking it to the next level in that interview... like, yeah, McCrea has great taste! πŸ€“ Anyway, I don't want to be all nostalgic but... Greg Brown will be deeply missed by fans of Cake and alternative rock in general πŸ•ŠοΈ. He had a way with guitar that was just infectious πŸ”₯.

πŸ˜” just heard about Greg Brown's passing 🎸😒 he was an incredible guitarist and songwriter, so underrated πŸ’― i loved how he co-wrote with John McCrea on some of Cake's biggest hits 🀩 'The Distance' still gives me chills every time 🎡 my favorite thing about his playing style is how emotive & expressive it was - always felt like it came from the heart ❀️ anyway, total loss for Cake and their fans πŸ‘πŸ•ŠοΈ

man πŸ˜” i'm really saddened by this news, greg brown was an incredible guitarist & songwriter he brought so much depth to cake's music 🎸 especially on songs like 'the distance' it's crazy that the band had a falling out but his legacy lives on πŸ’• i remember reading about him in interviews and how humble he was despite being part of such an influential band 🀝 what's really interesting is that he went on to do some amazing stuff outside of cake, collaborating with weezer & forming deathray πŸ‘ anyway, let's celebrate greg brown's life & music – he will be deeply missed πŸ’”

πŸŽΈπŸ˜” I'm kinda disappointed that Greg Brown left Cake, he seemed like the glue that held them together back in the day 🀝. Don't get me wrong, I love 'The Distance' but if I'm being real, it's not like he was the primary songwriter or anything πŸ€‘. McCrea got all the credit and Brown just kinda... existed on stage, playing his guitar πŸ’ͺ. And don't even get me started on how long it took him to find success after leaving Cake - what a letdown 😐. Still, his legacy lives on in 'The Distance' and his solo work with Deathray 🎸. Rest in peace, Greg πŸ‘»

πŸ˜” just heard the news about Greg Brown... he was such an underrated guitarist, people always focus on John McCrea's vocals but Brown brought this whole new vibe to Cake 🎸 his playing style is so distinctive, loved him on "The Distance" even though it's a super catchy song he didn't get the same credit as McCrea. anyway, I'm gonna miss that guy, hope he's jamming with Victor Damiani in Deathray or whatever project they're working on now 🀘
