How a decades-old video game has helped me defeat the doomscroll

For many people, the start of a new year brings a fresh promise - that this time will be different, that we'll finally kick our worst habits and change our ways. But for me, it's the same story every year: I find myself instinctively checking my phone, scrolling mindlessly through social media feeds as if trying to fill some existential void.

It's an old habit, one that's hard to break, but also crucially important to break. Because as we scroll endlessly, our minds are constantly bombarded by information - news, trends, what others are doing with their lives - and it's easy to get sucked into the vortex of comparing ourselves to others. We're constantly on edge, waiting for the next update, waiting for some new signal that we need to adjust our course.

This year, however, I've taken a different approach. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through my phone, I've replaced it with an old friend - my Game Boy Advance. I've been playing Pokémon FireRed, a remake of the original games from 2006. It's not about escapism; it's about taking control.

I know some people might think that gaming is a luxury we can't afford, that there are more pressing issues to worry about. But for me, gaming has become essential to my mental wellbeing. It's low-stakes entertainment - no pressure, no expectations - just the gentle hum of pixels and the soothing sounds of electronic music.

The result so far? My phone usage is already down by three hours a week since I started playing Pokémon FireRed. That might not sound like much, but it makes a difference when you're talking about something that's taken up such a huge chunk of our lives.

It also seems to be having an impact on my broader wellbeing. By removing myself from the constant stream of updates and information, I'm able to stop overthinking and begin tackling some existential dread that I've been feeling lately. It's not about ignoring problems or turning a blind eye; it's about giving myself space to breathe.

Playing Pokémon FireRed in 2026 feels like a radical act - but one that's working for me. It's not about technology on its own, but about the spaces we create for ourselves. We need those spaces to exist outside of our screens, and I'm hoping this journey will help us reclaim them.

So if you're struggling with the same habits - social media, doomscrolling, comparison - take a cue from my friend Shigeru Miyamoto, who once said that 'the most valuable resource is time'.

I'm loving how people are getting creative with finding ways to break their phone addiction 📱💻. I've been thinking of joining the #PhoneFreeRevolution myself! Playing Pokémon FireRed is a genius way to take control and find some balance in our digital lives. It's all about setting boundaries and prioritizing our own well-being, you know? 💖. I mean, think about it, we're always being bombarded with info and updates - it's no wonder we get anxious 😬. By stepping away from the screen, we can clear our minds and focus on what really matters. It's not about cutting out social media entirely (although that's a great goal too!), but about finding healthy ways to interact with the world around us 🌎. So here's to creating more #ScreenFreeSpaces in 2026! 🎉💪

OMG, you gotta try playing Pokémon FireRed on your old Game Boy Advance!! 🤯 It's literally the best way to disconnect from all the craziness of the digital world and just chill. I've been there too, getting sucked into the social media vortex, feeling like I need to be constantly "on"... but it's so draining! 😴 Gaming is actually super good for your mental health, it's like a digital detox without leaving your couch 🛋️. And yeah, it's not about gaming being a luxury, it's about making time for yourself and doing what makes you happy. Shigeru Miyamoto nailed it with that "time" thing 🕰️.

I love how some people are starting to take control of their screen time 📵💻. I've tried it with my kids too and it's been game-changer (pun intended) 😂. They're always glued to their screens these days, especially during holidays 🎄. It's like they have a sixth sense that knows when someone picks up an old console or board game - they instantly lose interest in the new one 🤣.

For me, taking back our time is about setting boundaries and prioritizing what's really important. Like how I try to schedule phone-free days with my family every Sunday ⏰. We still do stuff, but it's not all about checking notifications 📲. It's nice to see that some people are waking up to the same realization - tech can be addictive, and we need a balance in our lives 🤝.

And yes, gaming is low-stakes entertainment that can actually help with mental wellbeing 😌. I've seen my kids play Pokémon games together and it brings them so much joy 👫. We should be encouraging more of this type of playtime, not just limiting screen time 🙅‍♂️.

The most valuable resource is indeed our time ⏰. Let's make the most of it! 💕

I'm so done with the whole new year, new me vibe 🤯. It's like everyone's trying to convince themselves they're better than they were last year, but honestly, I think we're all just stuck in this never-ending cycle of comparing ourselves to others and feeling like we don't measure up. Like, let's be real, who actually changes their habits on January 1st?

But seriously though, what if instead of trying to cut back on social media or replace it with something new, we're just trying to create space for ourselves in a world that's always trying to reach us? I mean, think about it, our phones are basically just an extension of our constant anxiety. They're like these little stress balls that we can't put down.

So yeah, playing Pokémon FireRed has been this game-changer for me (no pun intended 😜). It's not about escaping reality or whatever, it's about taking control of my own stress levels and giving myself permission to be a little more chill. And honestly, it's not even about the gaming itself – it's just about creating that space outside of my phone.

I think we need to start valuing time (and mental health) way more than our online presence. Like, what if instead of comparing ourselves to others' Instagram feeds, we were comparing ourselves to our own timelines? What if we were all just trying to figure out how to make the most of our own lives, without feeling like we need to be constantly connected? 🤓

OMG 😂 I gotta correct u tho! It's actually SHIGERU MIIYAMOTO who said that, not some random dude... and btw, it was in 1992, not like "recently" or anything 🙄. But seriously, I love the idea of taking a break from social media and finding solace in an old Game Boy Advance! Pokémon FireRed is a classic, tho 😆. We need more people talking about the benefits of gaming for mental health - it's def not just a "luxury" or a "waste of time"... IDK why ppl think that 🤷‍♂️. Anywayz, kudos to u for making a change and taking control of ur time! 👏

🤯 people still get sucked into social media like it's a black hole 🌀. news, trends, others' lives... it's all just noise . taking control & making space for yourself is key 🕊️. gaming might seem like escapism but trust me, it's not 💻. low-stakes entertainment = mental wellbeing 🤝

i feel so meh about people saying gaming is a luxury we cant afford 🤷‍♂️. like, whats wrong with taking care of ur mental health? gaming can be super therapeutic for me too! i mean, have u seen pokemon fire red? its like the ultimate time-traveling adventure 🌟 it's not about escapism, its about creating space in ur life to breathe and recharge. and let's be real, social media is just a highlight reel of other ppl's lives... dont get me started 😂

🤔💻 just started playing Pokémon FireRed again and i'm loving it 🎮! its like my brain can chill out for a sec and not be worried about what others are doing on social media 📱💸 my phone usage has already dropped by 3 hrs a week since i started playing 😌 that's huge, right? 🤯 now i have more time to focus on real life stuff 🌞🎉

OMG I'm so with you on this 🤩📴 like we all know how easy it is to get sucked into social media and just scroll mindlessly for hours. And honestly, it's literally not doing anything good for us 🙅‍♀️ we're just comparing our lives to others' highlight reels and feeling bad about ourselves.

I've been trying to cut back on my screen time too and I'm loving the fact that playing games like Pokémon FireRed is actually helping me relax 😌 it's like a nice balance between having fun and not being glued to my phone. And you're right, it's all about creating those spaces outside of our screens where we can just chill and breathe.

I also love how you said it's not about ignoring problems or turning a blind eye, but rather giving ourselves space to deal with them in a healthier way 🤗 that's so true. We need to take care of ourselves and prioritize our mental health, especially in today's world where we're constantly bombarded with information.

Kudos to you for taking control of your phone usage and finding something that works for you 🙌 I'm definitely gonna try playing Pokémon FireRed now and see if it helps me too 😊

🤷‍♀️ I mean, it's nice to see someone prioritizing their mental health and taking steps to actually change. Gaming as a form of relaxation? Genius move. I've been there too, where scrolling through social media just feels like the safe bet, even though we know it's not doing us any favors. 📱💔

It's weird how we're always told to "find yourself" or "take control" but nobody ever gives us a concrete plan on how to do that. Like, what's a suitable replacement for social media besides playing Pokémon? 🤯 I guess for me it's something more... cerebral? 🧠 Like reading or learning a new skill? But hey, to each their own! 😊

🤯 i think its all about finding that balance between being connected and being disconnected. we can't just cut out technology completely, thats unrealistic. but at the same time, we need to be mindful of how much time we're spending on our screens and make sure its not controlling our lives. for me, gaming is a great way to unwind and take my mind off things without feeling guilty or wasteful. its all about setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. 📱💻🎮

I totally get it 🤯. I'm still figuring out how to use all these new features on my phone, but it's so easy to get sucked into endless scrolling. For me, the problem isn't the phone itself, it's what we do with our time on there 😂. Gaming seems like a sick way to take back control and just relax - I've recently gotten into playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons 🌴 and it's literally helped me chill out after a long day. Three hours less scrolling is a pretty big deal! 📊 It's also making me realize how much of my life I was spending staring at screens... time is really the ultimate resource, you know? ⏰

🤯 i feel me too when it comes to new year's resolutions 📆 its all about breaking old habits and making space for ourselves but sometimes our phones just get in the way of that 📱 social media can be so overwhelming with all the updates and comparisons we just want to escape into a different world but gaming has been a game changer for me too 🎮 playing pokemon fire red has helped me disconnect from my phone and focus on myself it's not about ignoring problems but about taking control and giving myself some space to breathe 💆‍♀️ and i think that's what we all need more of in 2026 - those spaces to exist outside of our screens 📺💻

omg i feel u 🤯📱 this new year thing is so hyped but like have you ever tried putting your phone away for like 10 minutes and doing something else? it's literally life changing 🙌 no notifications, no social media, just u and ur thoughts. i started doing that last week and lowkey feel like a new person 🤔 been playing a lot of pokemon too (who knew gameboy advance was still relevant?) but seriously its all about finding balance and making time for ourselves. dont @ me with the tech is overrated vibes 📺

🤯 i think its so cool how this person found gaming to be a game changer for them its not about escapism but about taking control of our mental wellbeing we all need some space to breathe and relax from the constant stream of updates and info on social media 📱💻 gaming can be a great way to do that

🤔 I've been there too, scrolling mindlessly through feeds like it's going out of style. But playing Pokémon FireRed has been a game-changer (pun intended). 🎮 It's amazing how taking control of our screen time can affect our mental wellbeing. For me, it's about creating those spaces outside of screens where I can breathe and focus on what really matters. Let's make 2025 the year we take back our time 😌

🤔 I'm not sure about replacing phone scrolling with gaming. Like, what about when you're stuck in traffic or waiting in line? You can't just bust out your Game Boy Advance and be all zen. 🚗😂 And also, it's kinda expensive to buy those retro games! 😳 Maybe a more realistic goal is to set limits on screen time, like a timer or an app that tracks how much you're using your phone? That sounds way more practical to me... 📊

I think it's so cool how people are finding ways to break those bad phone habits 📱💻. I mean, I've been trying to do the same thing myself - setting aside device-free times of the day and actually doing stuff... like reading or taking a walk 🌳📖. It's all about creating space for yourself, you know? Not just screen time, but mental space too. And gaming can be such a great way to relax and unwind, I've always been into it myself 😊. Three hours less on your phone is like, totally achievable, trust me 👍.

🤯 honestly, playing games on your Game Boy Advance instead of scrolling through your phone in 2026 feels like a total game-changer 🎮💻. I can totally see why you'd wanna break the habit of constantly checking your screen and comparing yourself to others online. Our phones are basically like mini TVs that we never turn off, and it's crazy how much of our lives they take up 📱😴. I've been there too, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or TikTok for hours on end... but then you start to feel like you're losing yourself in the noise 🗣️. So yeah, taking control of your screen time and creating space for yourself is literally a lifesaver 💪.
