Huge Brazilian raid on Rio gang leaves at least 60 people dead and 81 under arrest

Brazil's Police Launch Massive Raid on Gang, Leaving Dozens Dead, Over 80 Detained

In a brazen operation, Brazilian police and soldiers launched a massive raid on a notorious gang in Rio de Janeiro Tuesday, arresting 81 suspects and sparking violent shootouts that left at least 60 people dead. The scale of the operation was unprecedented, with around 2,500 officers involved.

The raid targeted the Red Command gang, which controls much of the city's favelas. The police operation, which included helicopters and armored vehicles, also resulted in the deaths of two police officers, according to witnesses.

Critics are calling for a thorough investigation into each death, with some likening it to "a huge tragedy" and a "disaster." Human Rights Watch has condemned the use of excessive force by police, saying that these kinds of operations often fail to catch the masterminds behind the gang but instead target lower-ranking members who can be easily replaced.

Governor Claudio Castro described the operation as the biggest in Rio's history, seizing 75 rifles and a large amount of illicit drugs. However, experts say that such operations are inefficient because they do not address the root causes of crime.

"This is not a public safety policy," said Luis Flavio Sapori, a sociologist at Pontifical Catholic University. "It's a policy of extermination, which makes the everyday life of Black and poor people a Russian roulette."

The Marielle Franco Institute has also criticized the operation, saying it ignores the root causes of crime and instead perpetuates violence against marginalized communities.

As the investigation into Tuesday's raid unfolds, questions remain about whether this kind of heavy-handed approach will ever be effective in tackling Brazil's persistent problem with organized crime.

omg u guys r goin crazy!!1! how can they just sweep in w/ 2500 officers & helicopters & just start shootin ppl? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ it sounds like a total war zone over there ๐ŸŒช๏ธ like, what even is the goal of this op? are they tryna catch the big bad gang leaderz or jus go around killin innocent people too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ i mean i feel 4 the cops who got hurt tho ๐Ÿ’” but like, isn't there a better way to tackle this whole crime thingy? ๐Ÿค” u hear what marielle franco institute is sayin' about it? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ all about addressin root causes & not just executin ppl w/ guns ๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

.. I mean, come on ๐Ÿค”... 2k5 is all about gettin' to the root of the problem, ya know? So, when it comes to these massive police raids like this one... they gotta think outside the box ๐Ÿ“ฆ. Just detainin' lower-ranking members ain't gonna solve nothin'! It's like tryin' to put out a fire with a squirt gun ๐Ÿ”ซ.

And don't even get me started on the fact that 2 cops died ๐Ÿ’€... now we got more questions than answers ๐Ÿคฏ. We need an in-depth investigation, for real ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ. These "experts" sayin' it's all about extermination? Give me a break! ๐Ÿ™„ That just perpetuates the cycle of violence, you feel? ๐Ÿ’”

And what about them root causes, tho? Poverty, inequality... we gotta tackle those head-on ๐Ÿ’ช. Just lockin' people up ain't gonna make Brazil safer ๐Ÿšซ. We need systemic change, not just a bunch of SWAT teams raidin' neighborhoods ๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

Let's hope the investigation goes deep enough to get to the bottom of this ๐Ÿ’ก.

man... I'm watching all these vids of ppl dyin in that brazilian raid ๐Ÿค• and it's like somethin outta a movie, but at the same time it feels sooo familiar - remember them movies from the 90s where the cops would do crazy raids on gangs & it'd always be some kinda wild shootin' scene? ๐Ÿ˜ณ anyway, i feel bad for all those ppl who lost their lives, but at the same time... ๐Ÿค” what's the point a' havin all these police officers & helicopters if we're just gonna have more crime in the long run? ๐Ÿšจ

omg u wont beleev wat just happnd in rio! brazilian polis r really takin it too far w/ these massive raids on gangs ๐Ÿคฏ they r not even catchin the big fish jus targetin smaller members ๐Ÿšซ human rights watch is all like "hey hold up, didnt we teach u guys about proportionality?" ๐Ÿค” anyway, 2 cops died in the op which is def a tragedy ๐Ÿ’” & now ppl are wonderin if these ops r jus gonna keep makin things worse ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿค” 60 people dead is just crazy man... I feel for the families who lost loved ones ๐Ÿค•. The police did their job but at what cost? ๐Ÿšซ 2k officers involved, that's a lot of lives put on the line ๐Ÿ’ฅ. I mean, can't they find a better way to deal with these gangs? It seems like just a numbers game to me, arresting and killing lots of people without addressing the real issues ๐Ÿ“Š.

I've been reading a lot about this issue and it's hard to see how these operations ever really make a difference ๐Ÿ’”. The Red Command gang has been around for years and they just keep coming back ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like they're a hydra, cutting off one head only for another to grow back in its place ๐ŸŒฟ.

I'm not saying the police aren't trying to do their job, but sometimes I feel like we're just treating the symptoms instead of the disease ๐Ÿ’Š. We need to get to the root causes of crime and find ways to address those issues if we ever want to make a real difference ๐Ÿค.

omg ๐Ÿคฏ just saw that there was this crazy raid on a gang in Rio and it's like whoa ๐Ÿ˜ฒ 60+ people dead is wild. i feel for the victims & their families ๐Ÿ’” but at the same time, idk if this is the best way to tackle crime cuz isn't it just gonna push more ppl into gangs or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ also what about the police officers who got killed tho ๐Ÿ˜ข. guess we need to keep an eye on how this whole thing goes down ๐Ÿ‘€

I'm so worried about the people who lost their lives today ๐Ÿค•. I mean, 60 is a huge number and it's not like they were just ordinary gang members... some of them could have been kids or families. It's just so sad. And what really gets me is that we're still trying to find ways to tackle organized crime but are using methods that seem more like a war zone than a solution ๐Ÿคฏ.

I think we need to take a step back and try to understand why these gangs exist in the first place. Is it poverty, lack of opportunities? We can't just keep arresting people without addressing the root causes. It's like trying to put out a fire with gasoline... not gonna work ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. We need to focus on creating jobs, education, and a way for people to escape that cycle. Until then, these kinds of raids will just keep happening and more lives will be lost ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿ˜” my heart is breakin' for those 60 innocent lives lost ๐Ÿ™ it's just so sad that we're still livin' in a world where violence and gang wars are a norm ๐Ÿ’” these things are always so senseless, like what can we do to prevent this kind of tragedy from happenin' again? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
