I Love LA review – Rachel Sennott's HBO comedy finds itself but takes its time

HBO's new comedy series "I Love LA" starring Rachel Sennott is a messy, self-absorbed portrayal of Los Angeles' creative class. The show was created by Sennott, an internet It Girl known for her modern indistinction between actor and celebrity, and the online sensibility that comes with it.

The series follows the life of Maia, a 27-year-old aspiring talent manager living in LA's affluent neighborhood of Los Feliz. Maia is played by Sennott, who brings to the role her unique blend of contradictions - she's hyper-self aware yet delusional, histrionic yet dead-eyed, and overtly sexual but girlish.

At first glance, "I Love LA" feels like a glossy prestige brand bet on Sennott's popularity, rather than a genuine portrayal of life in Los Angeles. However, as the series progresses, it begins to find its footing, revealing a more nuanced portrait of Maia and her friends.

The supporting cast includes Charlie, a celebrity stylist with a cynical gift for social climbing, Alani, a clueless nepo baby working at her father's production company, and Tallulah, a New York Instagram influencer who blazes back into Maia's life. The chemistry between Sennott and A'Zion, who plays Tallulah, is undeniable, and their scenes together are some of the most enjoyable in the series.

The business of internet celebrity and Hollywood's navel-gazing world can be a tricky combination to capture on screen, but "I Love LA" eventually finds its footing. Director Lorene Scafaria brings an artful, emotionally intuitive approach to the show, and the visuals are refreshing.

While "I Love LA" is not without its flaws - some episodes feel mechanical, and Sennott's Maia can be insufferable at times - it's a bumpy ride that rewards patience. The show's sharp ironies and increasingly textured portrait of Los Angeles' creative class make for compelling viewing.

Ultimately, "I Love LA" is a show about the endless embarrassments and boundless opportunities of celebrity in one's 20s. It's a portrayal that feels both timely and timeless, and Sennott's performance at its center makes it impossible to look away.

🤔 I feel like HBO took a risk with "I Love LA", but it kinda pays off 🤑. The show's messy vibe is actually kind of relatable, especially if you're part of the creative class in LA 💼. Rachel Sennott's performance as Maia is wild and all over the place, but that's kinda what makes her so lovable 😂. I love how the show doesn't shy away from the absurdities of internet fame and Hollywood's superficial world 📺. The cast is also great, especially A'Zion and their chemistry with Sennott is 🔥. My only issue is that some episodes can be a bit meh 😴, but overall it's a bumpy ride worth watching 🎬.

I don't usually comment but I have to say that "I Love LA" feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy and cool. Like, the lead actress is literally a social media star herself and it's kinda cringy to see her playing this character who's trying to navigate the same world she's built her persona in. 🤔 The show does have some great moments though, like when Rachel Sennott and A'Zion chemistry on screen is undeniable. It's like they're having a real conversation rather than just reading lines. And I love how the show explores the absurdities of LA's creative class, it's so relatable. But overall, I think it's a messy show that could've benefited from some tighter writing and editing. 😐

im not sure im sold on rachels new show i mean dont get me wrong she can act but this whole LA creative class thing just feels so... tryhard 🤷‍♀️. like are we really gonna sit here and watch these people be all extra and self-absorbed for the sake of entertainment? also, what's up with the constant references to social media and online fame? can't we just focus on actual talent for once? 📺

omg i love how rachel sennott just owns every scene as maia lol she's like the ultimate embodiment of los angeles' creative class - all the self awareness but still totally clueless at the same time 🤣 anyway i think the show gets better as it goes on, the supporting cast is so interesting and the chemistry between rachel and a'zion is everything 💖 the visuals are also really cool, director lorene scafaria did a great job of capturing the vibe of los angeles. some episodes can be a bit meh but overall i'm here for maia's messy life 🤗

I gotta say, I was pretty meh on this new HBO series "I Love LA" when it first dropped 🤷‍♀️. At first glance, it just seemed like a bunch of rich kids playing with their privileged cards, and I wasn't exactly sure if I wanted to tune in. But after giving it some time, I gotta admit that it's actually got some real depth to it 💡.

I think the show does a great job of poking fun at the absurdity of Hollywood's social climbing scene, but also explores some really relatable themes about identity and finding your place in the world 🌆. And Rachel Sennott's performance is just top-notch - she's got this weird charisma that makes you love to hate her character 😂.

The supporting cast is pretty great too, especially A'Zion as Tallulah 💁‍♀️. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their scenes together are some of the most enjoyable parts of the show. Overall, I'd say "I Love LA" is a bit of a messy, self-absorbed portrayal, but it's also refreshingly honest and timely 🕰️.

OMG 🤣 I gotta say, this new show "I Love LA" is like, so extra 💁‍♀️! Rachel Sennott is playing this character Maia who's literally the epitome of online fame and it's just... meh 🤷‍♀️. At first, I was like "is this a parody or are they actually serious?" 🤔 but then as the series goes on, you can see her growing into this more nuanced version of herself.

And don't even get me started on Tallulah, A'Zion's character is literally my spirit animal 💖! The chemistry between Sennott and A'Zion is real 🔥 and I loved their scenes together. Lorene Scafaria as the director did a great job bringing this artful vibe to the show.

The thing is, this show isn't just about the internet fame, it's about the ups and downs of being in your 20s trying to figure out who you are and what you want. It's relatable, but also a little cringeworthy at times 🙃. Overall, I'd say it's worth watching, especially if you're into that sorta thing 😎

OMG, u guys! I'm literally obsessed with this new show "I Love LA"!! 🤩 The way Rachel Sennott plays Maia is like, SO relatable 😂. I mean, who hasn't felt like they're trying to adult in LA but really they're just winging it? 🤷‍♀️ And the cast is everything! Charlie and Alani are my fave 🙌. The way Lorene Scafaria directs is so artful 💕. But what I love most about this show is how it's like, poking fun at all of us who are trying to make it in Hollywood 🤣. It's not perfect but it's SO entertaining 💖.

Ugh I love how this new show is like a total mess but in a good way you know? It's like the creators are all trying to say something deep about LA's creative class but they're just kinda throwing a bunch of weird characters and situations at us 🤣 And can we talk about Rachel Sennott's performance? She's like the ultimate 20-something girl - all self-aware and delusional at the same time, it's so relatable! But what I love most is how the show slowly starts to get its footing and reveals this really nuanced portrait of Maia and her friends. It's like they're trying to say something about the absurdity of internet fame and Hollywood's obsession with itself. And honestly, I'm kinda obsessed with it now 😂

idk why ppl r so hard on this show... i think its actually kinda refreshing to see someone like maia - all her flaws & contradictions - on screen 🤷‍♀️. im tired of watching perfect ppl everywhere, you know? i love how the show gets real about LA's creative class & their struggles with fame & identity 📺. rachel sennott is a genius in her own way, bringing so much energy to this role 💁‍♀️. and can we talk about the chemistry between maia & tallulah tho?! 😍 i'm not gonna lie, its been a wild ride watching this show... sometimes it feels like they're pulling somethin on us 🤯, but then you just roll with it & enjoy the messy, self-absorbed ride 🎉.

omg i feel like they're being kinda harsh on rachel sennott 🤔 she's already got so much charisma in her acting career, and i love how the show's trying to capture that online sensibility vibe 💻 but yeah, some eps can be super meh idk about tallulah tho 😐 A'Zion is tho tho tho lol what do u think about this new series? is it gonna be a guilty pleasure or a must-watch for u 🤗

OMG u guys I just watched this new HBO show "I Love LA" 🤩 starring Rachel Sennott and I gotta say its SOOO messy lol! she plays this girl Maia who's like the ultimate self-absorbed celeb wannabe 🤪 but at the same time its kinda relatable idk? anyway, I love how the show starts off all superficial but then gets deeper into the characters and their struggles 🤗 A'Zion is SO HOT 🙌 and I ship Tallulah & Maia's friendship 💕 but some episodes feel like they drag on forever 😴 still worth watching tho!
