Illinois, dozens of states sue Trump administration over planned SNAP funding cuts

Illinois Joins Nationwide Bid to Stop Trump Administration's SNAP Funding Cuts

A federal lawsuit has been filed by attorneys general from 25 states, including Illinois, against the Trump administration over its decision to cut food stamp funding as the government shutdown continues. The move would leave nearly 2 million Illinois residents without benefits in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), starting November 1, unless the shutdown ends.

The lawsuit claims that the federal government has access to $3 billion in SNAP contingency reserve funds, which it is using a "necessary to carry out program operations" clause to justify withholding funding. The coalition of attorneys general and governors argues that this move would harm low-income families and have ripple effects on other social programs and the economy.

According to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, the Trump administration's decision is "deliberate, illegal, and cruel." He stated that the funding cuts would disproportionately affect households with children, who make up 45% of SNAP recipients in Illinois. The lawsuit also claims that each dollar in SNAP benefits generates about $1.54 in economic activity, highlighting the significant impact on grocery stores and related industries.

Illinois stands to lose approximately $350 million in funds if the funding is cut off, which would be a blow to the state's economy. Food pantries have already begun bracing for longer lines due to federal cuts in other social programs like Medicaid. Grocery stores that accept SNAP payments also face significant economic losses, with SNAP spending leading to an output of about $1.3 billion in Illinois grocery and retailing industries.

The lawsuit seeks a federal judge's order to compel the Trump administration to use contingency reserve funds to continue funding the program for families who need it most throughout November.

I'm low-key shocked that the Trump admin is still trying to screw with people's food security ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, come on, can't they see how this would affect real people? Those SNAP cuts aren't just about budgeting; they're about abandoning folks who need help the most. Illinois losing $350 million in funds would be a major blow to the state economy too - it's not like we don't have enough problems already ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm all for holding the admin accountable, but this lawsuit feels like just another example of the system being slow to react to real-life consequences. I mean, where were they when actual people were struggling? The fact that food pantries are already preparing for longer lines just shows how messed up our social safety net is ๐Ÿšจ.

It's interesting to see all 25 states banded together on this one - at least it means some folks are finally speaking up. Fingers crossed the judge sides with Illinois and the other affected states ๐Ÿ’ช

omg i'm literally shocked that 25 states are coming together like this ๐Ÿคฉ i mean, can you imagine if illinois was alone in fighting for its people's right to food stamps? it's like a big ol' weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing that there are ppl who care about the well being of all americans ๐Ÿ’– and let's be real, those $3 billion contingency reserve funds should definitely be used to help out low-income families ๐Ÿค‘ i'm not sure what's more impressive, the fact that the fed gov is trying to cut funding or the fact that attorneys general from 25 states are fighting back with all their might ๐Ÿ™Œ

omg what if they actually win the case? ๐Ÿค” wouldnt that be a huge relief for all those ppl relying on snap in illinois? like, i dont get why the trump admin would do this... wont affect anyone but ppl who are already struggling so much ๐Ÿ˜” how does $1.3 billion affect grocery stores tho? isnt that just money circulating through the economy or somethin? ๐Ÿค‘ also, isnt it kinda unfair to leave households with kids who need food most without any help? ๐Ÿ‘ช

๐Ÿค” this is so messed up I mean, i get that trump wants to cut costs but 2 million ppl in illinois are gonna be affected ๐Ÿค‘ and its not just about the money fam these people rely on food stamps to get by & now its gonna take a hit on grocery stores too ๐Ÿ›๏ธ i feel for low-income families they're already struggling as it is. $350 million might seem like a lot but when u gotta put food on the table, every little bit counts ๐Ÿ’ธ

OMG, this is so unfair ๐Ÿคฏ! The Trump admin's decision to cut SNAP funding during the gov shutdown is basically heartless ๐Ÿ’”. Like, can't they see that low-income fams are already struggling? ๐Ÿ™„ Those $350 million in lost funds would be a huge hit on IL's economy ๐Ÿ“‰ and we're talkin' about people who really need food on their tables ๐Ÿด. I mean, the impact on grocery stores & related industries would be HUGE ๐Ÿ’ธ! And did you know each dollar in SNAP benefits generates like $1.54 in economic activity? That's a pretty strong argument for not cutting funding ๐Ÿค‘. Illinois AG Kwame Raoul is right to call it "deliberate, illegal, and cruel" ๐Ÿ˜ก. The coalition of attorneys general & governors should get this lawsuit settled ASAP ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ #StandWithIL #ProtectSNAP #FoodForAll

I'm so worried about what's happening with food stamps in Illinois ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ”. I mean, remember when you could get free school lunches and breakfasts? Now, it feels like they're just taking away everything that helps people, especially the poor ones who can't afford groceries themselves. I know we've been through tough times before, but this feels like a really big deal ๐Ÿคฏ.

I was talking to my grandma the other day, and she told me how she used to rely on food stamps when she was struggling to make ends meet. She's always saying that things were better back then, and I think she's right ๐Ÿ˜”. We need to make sure that everyone has access to food and support, not just those who are already doing okay.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but we need to do something about this ASAP โฐ. Can't we just use some of that $3 billion in contingency reserve funds to help people out? It's just not right that they're taking away our safety net like this ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

omg u guys can u imagine if they actually cut off that money?? ๐Ÿคฏ ilinois would be literally lost on food stamp funding its like $350 million!! and all those ppl wouldnt have nothin to eat lol my aunt has family in chicago & illinois she would freak out if this happened๐Ÿ˜ฑ & what about the grocery stores? snapchat spending is already huge in that state u dont wanna cut it off now thats just gonna hurt more ppl & the economy ๐Ÿค‘

Ugh, can't believe the Trump admin is at it again ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, what even is the point of having a contingency fund if you're just gonna cut off people's food stamps? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's not like they're trying to help anyone, it's just a cruel joke. And now Illinois is taking them to court and it's about time someone stood up for those families who need the help. The econ impact of cutting SNAP funding would be huge too, I mean, have you seen the numbers? $350 million in losses just for one state? It's like they're intentionally trying to hurt people's livelihoods. Anyway, can't wait to see how this all plays out ๐Ÿค”

omg i cant even imagine what those 2 million illinois residents will have to go through no food on the table and now they got to worry about it too ๐Ÿค• its like the trump admin is trying to make their lives harder and more stressful already with the government shutdown.

i feel so bad for all those families with kids who rely on snap its not just money, its stability and security for them. and you're right, every dollar counts when it comes to the economy too $1.3 billion in grocery industries losing that amount is huge

illinois should totally win this lawsuit i hope they get a judge who agrees and helps those families out

idk how ppl in DC think they can just cut SNAP funding like that ๐Ÿคฏ $350 mil isnt chump change for illo, esp with all the grocery stores already strugglin due to medicaid cuts... whats next? a big ol blockin of all social programs just cuz trump said so?

I'm literally shook by this ๐Ÿ˜ฑ news. Like, I know the government shutdown has been going on for ages, but cutting SNAP funding in November? That's just cruel, you feel? ๐Ÿ’” 2 million people are gonna lose benefits?! My heart goes out to those low-income families with kids who already struggle to make ends meet.

I mean, we all know that Illinois is already facing financial struggles ๐Ÿค‘, so losing $350 million is a huge blow. And it's not just the people who lose benefits, but also the grocery stores and industries that rely on SNAP spending. Like, how are they supposed to keep their businesses afloat if they're not getting those funds? ๐Ÿ’ธ

I'm all for being fiscally responsible, but this feels like a slap in the face to some of our most vulnerable citizens ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. I just hope the court sees it that way too and forces the Trump administration to use those contingency reserve funds to keep SNAP going. We can't let people go hungry because of politics ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ, 2 mil ppl in IL are gonna lose SNAP benefits?! That's like, so not fair fam ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! The gov't is literally cutting off food for people when they really need it most. I mean, we gotta keep our priorities straight, ya know? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ They're saying the contingency reserve funds can be used for "program operations", but what about the people who are struggling already?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Can't they see how this is gonna affect all those families with kids?! ๐Ÿคฏ

omg can't believe they're going after food stamp funding ๐Ÿคฏ like how are they gonna make life worse for low income families? Illinois is already struggling with its own budget issues and now this? $350 million is a lot of money, especially when you consider the impact it has on grocery stores and related industries... SNAP spending in IL generates over 1.3 billion in economic activity ๐Ÿ“ˆ plus they're saying each dollar in benefits generates like $1.54 in economic activity, that's crazy! It just shows how interconnected everything is, and how one decision can have so many far-reaching consequences... ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿค• Food stamps are important 4 many familes & illinois is getting hit hard ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. $350 million cut? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ That's a big deal 4 their economy ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ“‰. Low-income families will suffer the most ๐Ÿ‘ช๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜ข. Every $1 in SNAP benefits brings in $1.54 in economic activity, so it's not just about cutting costs ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก. Grocery stores & related industries will feel the pinch too ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ›๏ธ. We need to support our familes & SNAP recipients during this difficult time ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฝโค๏ธ. The lawsuit is a good start ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ, but we need to keep pushing for change ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿ’ช.

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ, this is just another example of how the government shutdown is affecting everyday people ๐Ÿ™„. I get that we gotta balance budgets and all, but cutting food stamp funding? That's just heartless ๐Ÿ˜“. Like, what's gonna happen to those families who are already struggling? They're not exactly swimming in cash ๐Ÿ’ธ. And it's not like they can just magically find more money or something ๐Ÿค‘. The fact that the government has access to $3 billion in contingency reserve funds and is still trying to justify cutting funding is just mind-boggling ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, come on! Use those funds to help people who need it most, not to stick it to low-income families ๐Ÿ‘Ž. It's like they're counting on people being too poor to notice or something ๐Ÿ˜’.
