Investigators say doomed UPS plane had cracks in engine mount, release dramatic photos of moments before deadly crash

Dramatic Photos of UPS Plane Crash Show Engine Detaching in Mid-Air, Investigators Say Crack in Wing Mount Was Key to Disaster

Federal investigators have released dramatic photos showing the moment when a US Airlines MD-11 cargo plane disintegrated in mid-air just 30 feet off the ground, killing all 14 people on board and 3 more on the ground near Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report states that cracks were found in the engine mount of the left wing, raising questions about whether these issues should have been addressed before the plane took off. The plane was due for a routine inspection of key engine mount parts with fractures but still had nearly 7,000 takeoffs and landings to complete.

The shocking images show an engine flying off the plane's left wing and soaring up and over it before coming back down in flames, engulfing the aircraft in a blaze. The last photo captures the plane slightly airborne with its left wing ablaze.

"This is a devastating tragedy that was preventable," said aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti. "UPS had been maintaining this maintenance within the required time frame, but I'm sure the FAA will now be pondering whether that time frame is adequate."

The NTSB has confirmed that evidence including the plane's black boxes have been recovered from the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board will likely focus on determining the root cause of the disaster and developing an inspection plan to repair or replace damaged engine mount parts. Once these repairs are completed, the fleet can return to service.

US Airlines President Bill Moore said that his company is working closely with investigators to identify the cause of the crash.

The victims of the disaster include a young child, who was a passenger on the flight and had been traveling with her best friend's family for the holidays. Three employees from Grade A Auto, one of the businesses hit by the crash, were also among those killed.

Ugh, can't believe this happened πŸ€•... I mean, it's just crazy to think about a plane disintegrating in mid-air because of some engine mount cracks. Like, what's the deal with that? How many times did they have to tell UPS to fix those issues before someone listened? 7,000 takeoffs and landings is a whole lotta neglect πŸ˜’... And now people are dead πŸ™... can't even find any info on if the plane had gone through the required inspection in time or not, just "maintenance within the required time frame"... what does that even mean? Need some sources here, pls!

πŸ€” I mean, what's the deal with these planes? 14 people dead, that's just crazy 🚨. So, cracks in the wing mount and engine mount, big whoop, shouldn't have been an issue... I guess? πŸ˜’ Still gotta wonder how many more close calls there were before this one happened 🀯. At least they got the black boxes out, that's a plus... or is it? 😐 Anyway, hope these investigations come up with some solid answers and not just a bunch of "it was an accident" nonsense πŸ’”.

I'm telling ya, this plane crash is more than just a tragic accident... it's like they knew it was gonna happen! I mean, think about it, the engine mount had cracks and no one thought to address them before takeoff? That's like ignoring a warning sign, you know? And now we're hearing that UPS had been maintaining those parts within the required time frame... what does that say? It says they were just covering their own behinds.

And have you seen the photos of the engine flying off in mid-air? 🀯 That's not an accident, that's a design failure. I'm not saying it was intentional or anything, but it's like they wanted to make sure everyone knew about this problem. And now we're gonna be hearing more about inspection plans and repairs... it's just gonna become a never-ending cycle of "we'll fix it, we'll fix it"... nope! It's all too convenient.

I'm keeping an eye on this one, folks... something fishy is going on here πŸ˜’.

man this is so sad πŸ€•πŸ’” another tragic plane crash and it's just devastating to think about all those lives lost. the fact that cracks in the engine mount weren't addressed before takeoff is just crazy 🀯 7k takeoffs and landings without fixing it? that's just unacceptable πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

and wow those pics of the plane disintegrating mid-air are insane 😲 like whoa. and to think a young kid was on board too 🎁😒 my heart goes out to their family and friends.

it's so important for regulators to be more strict about maintenance checks 🚫 and it's also super worrying that this disaster could have been prevented if only those cracks were addressed sooner ⏰. anyway, fingers crossed the NTSB gets to the bottom of this and makes sure it never happens again πŸ’―

OMG, this is just so sad πŸ€•πŸ˜”... 14 lives lost & what really blows my mind is that the plane had like a gazillion takeoffs & landings left to do before they even addressed these cracks in the wing mount πŸ™„... how did they not see that coming? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, yeah, maybe the FAA will re-evaluate their maintenance schedule but for now, it's just heartbreaking πŸ’”

Omg this is so heartbreaking πŸ€•πŸ™ I cant even imagine loosing 17 lives like that its just too much 😩 my heart goes out to the families of the victims esp the little kid who was traveling with her friends for holidays πŸŽ„πŸ˜” and those employees from Grade A Auto 🀝 they were just going about their day when tragedy struck πŸ’”

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Like, what's up with these maintenance records? 7,000 takeoffs and landings without addressing a crack in the wing mount? 🚨 That's not exactly reassuring when you're hurtling through the air at Mach 1. The FAA's "adequate" timeline just doesn't cut it here. And now we get to deal with the aftermath - losing 17 lives, including that poor kid who was just trying to enjoy her holidays. 😒

Man this is so sad πŸ€•. I'm still trying to process how something like this can happen on a plane that was already due for an inspection. It's just not fair to all those families who lost loved ones in such a tragic way πŸ’”. The thought of cracks in the engine mount going unnoticed for so long is just heartbreaking 😩. We need to make sure our airports and air travel safety protocols are top-notch, you know? It's like, we should be able to look at these photos and think "okay, that could've happened to us" instead of thinking it's something that can never happen again 🚫.

🚨 The fact that a plane just 30ft off the ground can literally fall apart in mid-air is mind-blowing. I mean, what's going through your head when you see an engine flying off like it's nothing? 🀯 Like, did they not notice anything weird before takeoff?

And honestly, if there were cracks in the wing mount and still flew 7,000 times without addressing them... I don't know how many people would be here talking about this. It just goes to show that one wrong move can have catastrophic consequences.

I'm glad investigators are looking into it because we need to make sure this kind of tragedy never happens again. But at the same time, there's a bigger question here - was the required inspection time frame really not enough? We need answers πŸ€”

I'm low-key shocked that the maintenance team only needed 7k more flights to fix this major crack in the wing mount 🀯 The NTSB is right though, it's a total bummer that these cracks weren't addressed before takeoff πŸ˜” It's not like they were trying to save money or anything... who knows how many lives could've been saved if they just prioritized maintenance? 🚨 Anyway, I'm sure the FAA will come up with some new regulations to make things "safer"... but let's be real, can't we just have a 24/7 maintenance schedule on all planes already? πŸ’ͺ

OMG, what a nightmare 🀯! I mean, can't we just get one plane to make it through a routine inspection without disintegrating mid-air? πŸ™„ It's like they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... or in this case, if it's cracked and worn out, maybe don't fly it for another 7k landings πŸ˜‚. And what's up with the wing mount cracks? Did UPS just decide to be all "we're good" with that? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm shaking my head over here... all those lives lost, and I'm just thinking about how they should've checked that thing before sending it off into the wild blue yonder 🌊.

OMG 🀯 u think 7k takeoffs & landings should've fixed that wing mount crack lol like what was UPS thinking? they knew it needed inspection before flight πŸ’€ but clearly didnt wanna delay the plane or lose revenue πŸ€‘ now its gonna be all about who's accountable for this disaster 🚨 gotta feel for the poor child who lost her life on that flight 😒

😱 Oh man... this is just devastating! How could this have happened?! They knew there was a crack in that wing mount and still took off. It's like they were playing with fire πŸš’πŸ’₯. And what's with all these takeoffs and landings to do before the inspection? Shouldn't safety come first?! 😑 The images are haunting, I don't know how anyone can watch those and not feel sick to their stomach. A young child was killed... it's just not right πŸ€•.

OMG what a horrific tragedy πŸ€•πŸ˜± this plane crash is so devastating and it's just not right that it happened with all those people on board πŸ’”πŸš¨ 7k takeoffs & landings without major issues beforehand? I mean I know maintenance can be tricky but it seems like they should've done something about the engine mount crack before the flight πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ’₯ and now these innocent lives are lost 😒😭 rest in peace to everyone who was on that plane ❀️

OMG, like seriously?! 14 lives lost because of that crack in wing mount? And they knew about it but still didn't do anything about it? I mean, I get it, it's not like they just ignored it or something 😩, but still, 7k takeoffs and landings is a whole lotta flying! You'd think that'd give them some time to fix the issue, you know? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ And now they're gonna have to redo all that maintenance, it's just so frustrating! πŸ’”

🚨😱 this is just terrible! 14 lives lost... and it could've been prevented if they checked those engine mounts before takeoff πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. 7k flights to go before they did? 🀯 4.9 billion passengers carried by UPS last year alone πŸ“ˆ, and now this happens. 1 in every 11 million flight hours results in a fatal accident according to the FAA πŸ˜•. that's just crazy!
