'Is this doable?': why political paralysis threatens an ambitious Brussels arts complex

A highly anticipated arts complex in the heart of Brussels is facing an uncertain future due to political paralysis. The Kanal museum, set to open on November 28, 2026, boasts an impressive 95% completion rate and promises to be a game-changer for the city's cultural scene. However, the lack of a functioning government for the semi-autonomous Brussels-Capital region is now casting a shadow over the project.

With its ambitious plans to house 12,500 square meters of exhibition space, an architecture center, restaurants, and live performance venues, Kanal aims to establish itself as a major cultural destination in Europe. The investment is substantial, with predicted annual costs of €2 million for a five-year partnership with the Paris-based Centre Pompidou.

Despite its global ambitions, the project has faced criticism from local artists and politicians. Dirk Snauwaert, director of Wiels, a modern art gallery that does not receive structural financial support from the Brussels region, has questioned the feasibility of Kanal's plans. "Who thinks this is doable?" he asked.

The deadlock in the Brussels-Capital region has been ongoing for 537 days, with no end in sight. The proposed budget cuts have sparked concerns about the project's future. The Flemish Green party has suggested that the ambitions of Kanal should be severely curtailed due to its size and scope.

The situation is further complicated by the expected austerity measures and the proposed reduction in Kanal's operating budget by 60%. The director of the museum, Kasia Redzisz, believes that abandoning Kanal now would amount to "cultural suicide."

As the project teeters on the brink of collapse, it remains to be seen whether politicians will find a way to overcome their differences and bring this ambitious cultural complex to fruition. With €1 billion in savings needed from the total budget of €7 billion, all departments and projects are being asked to contribute to the collective effort.

The fate of Kanal hangs in the balance, with the city's artistic reputation hanging precariously in the balance. Can this massive arts complex be saved, or will it succumb to the politics that have been paralyzing the Brussels region?

Ugh 🤦‍♀️, can't believe what's happening to Kanal 🤯! I mean, €1 billion is a lot of dough 💸, but €7 billion is even more 😱. It's like they're asking everyone to dip into their own pocket and still manage to make it work 🤔.

I get that there's politics involved, and that's no good 🙅‍♂️, but can't we just put aside our differences for the sake of art and culture? 🎨🌟 It'd be a shame if Kanal goes under 💔. I mean, who doesn't love a good cultural hub with restaurants, live performances, and all that jazz 🍽️🎵.

Let's hope politicians figure out their act and come together to make this thing happen 🤞. We need more of this kind of stuff in Brussels – the arts can bring people together, you know? 💕

its so frustrating to see something like kanal museum get stuck in politics 🤯, i mean who gets to decide what art and culture gets shown in a city? shouldnt its the people who care about arts & culture who make decisions not politicians 🙄. i think kanal has some amazing plans but the way its being handled is just ridiculous 🚫. if they were to cut back on the budget even more, it'll be like taking the heart out of kanal 💔. i hope the city comes together and finds a way to make this happen, for brussels' sake 💪.

Wow 🤯, €1 billion is a huge amount of money and I hope the politicians can sort out their differences soon! Interesting 😊, I wonder if they'll find a way to make it work with the 60% reduction in operating budget. The city's artistic reputation is at stake here!

It's crazy how a project that's almost done can get stuck like this 🤯 The politicians are all talk, no action, and now Kanal is suffering for it 😔 I mean, 12,500 square meters of exhibition space sounds awesome, but if it can't even get funding, what's the point? 🤑 And €1 billion in savings needed? That's like asking artists to sell their soul just to keep the project alive 🎨💸

Ugh, can't believe it 🤦‍♂️... Kanal museum is like, so close to opening but now politicians are all like "meh" and won't let it happen. €2 million partnership with Centre Pompidou seems like a lot, I mean, what if they can't even make that work? 🤑 Local artists and politicians already hating on it too... who's gonna save the day? 😬 537 days of no government? That's just crazy!

I'm worried about the Kanal museum thingy 🤔... I mean, €2 million a year is crazy talk for just 5 years! How are they planning on paying for this? It's like they think money grows on trees or something 🌳. And what's up with the Centre Pompidou partnership? Sounds like they're trying to pawn off their problems on Brussels. Can't they just work out their own issues? The whole thing is stressing me out 😬...

omg this is so disappointing 🤕 i was super excited about Kanal but now im not sure if its even going to happen. €1 billion in savings needed from €7 billion is crazy talk! cant they just sort out their differences already?! the fact that local artists and politicians are speaking out against it makes me think there must be some serious concerns about this project. what was the point of planning a 95% completion rate if its still gonna get pulled back at the last minute? 🤦‍♀️

I gotta say 🤔, the whole thing is kinda like when you're trying to get a huge puzzle right, but every piece keeps getting lost in the mess. The Kanal museum, with its bright future plans and €7 billion budget, is like that first puzzle piece - full of promise 💡. But then you got your local artists and politicians, they're like the pieces that don't fit, they keep questioning if it's all even possible 🤷‍♂️.

It's also making me think about how sometimes we gotta step back and look at the bigger picture 🌆. Is this massive arts complex really what Brussels needs right now? Or is it just a bunch of grand gestures that aren't gonna make a real difference in the end? I mean, €2 million a year for five years might sound like a lot, but when you're talking about saving €1 billion... 🤑

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if those politicians can put aside their differences and get their act together 💪. Can't help but wonder what the consequences would be if they don't ⚠️. Either way, it's gonna be a wild ride watching this one unfold 👀

I'm low-key freaking out about Kanal museum 🤯! Like, why is everyone so worried about politics holding them back? I think it's awesome that they're pushing boundaries and trying something new. Who cares if there are some disagreements? That's what makes it interesting, right?

And honestly, 12,500 square meters of exhibition space sounds like a dream come true 🤩. I'm all for arts getting the funding it needs. Let's not be too hard on Kasia Redzisz – "cultural suicide" is quite dramatic 😂.

I also think Dirk Snauwaert has a point, but not in the way people are interpreting it 🤔. Maybe instead of scaling back Kanal, they should try to find a solution that works for everyone? It's like, Brussels-Capital region politics are so predictable – can't they just work together for once? 😒

We'll see how this all plays out. But one thing's for sure: if Kanal goes down, I'm gonna be super sad 😔.

Ugh, can't believe what's happening with Kanal 🤕... like, they've worked so hard on this project and it's just being held back by all these petty politicians. It's not fair to the artists and creatives who are counting on this place to be a game-changer for Brussels' cultural scene. €1 billion is a lot of money, but I think it's worth risking to make something amazing happen 🎉... what if they scale back the plans and just focus on getting it open as soon as possible? It's better than giving up altogether 💔... fingers crossed that someone comes along and figures out a way to break this impasse 💪.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Kanal project 🤞... I mean, can you even imagine what would happen if they cancelled this?! 🚨 Art and culture in Brussels are already so underrated, we need more spaces like this to thrive! 💥 Plus, it's not just about the politics, it's about the people who made it happen - all those artists and creatives who poured their hearts into this project. The thought of them being left without a space is heartbreaking 🤕... I hope they find a way to get past their differences and make this dream a reality 💫

this is so crazy 🤯 i mean i get it, politics and budget cuts are a thing but €1 billion from 7 billion is like, barely scratching the surface lol. can't they find a way to make this work without having to slash every department's budget by 60%?! it's not just about Kanal, it's about the city's culture and artistic identity. what's next, closing down all the local museums and galleries too? 🤕 i think kasia redzisz is right, abandoning Kanal now would be like "cultural suicide" - we need this kind of investment to bring people together and create something new and amazing 💖

I'm getting major FOMO over this Kanal museum 🤯. I mean, €1 billion is a huge chunk of change and if they can pull it off, it's gonna be a game-changer for Brussels' cultural scene. But at the same time, €7 billion is a crazy amount to sink into a project with so many moving parts. The pressure is on politicians to get their act together before this thing tanks 🤦‍♂️. Local artists like Dirk Snauwaert have valid concerns about feasibility, and I don't blame them for questioning the plan. It's not just about Kanal's success or failure, but also the city's reputation on the line 🌎. Can they pull it off? Only time will tell 😬

omg i just cant even think about kanal right now 🤯 its like my heart is breaking for all the artists and creatives who were counting on this project to change the cultural landscape of brussels. i mean 95% completion rate is insane but at the same time its also super scary when u think about how close we are to it shutting down 💔 i feel bad for kasia redzisz she seems so passionate about her work and the thought of abandoning kanal now would be devastating for her and everyone involved. i hope somethin changes soon 🤞

I'm feeling so worried about the Kanal museum 🤕😩. It sounds like such a huge project and I can see why they'd want to make some changes, but €1 billion in savings is a lot! 🤑 What if it ends up not getting finished or gets cut back too much? That would be such a shame for Brussels' cultural scene 🎨👎. Do you think the politicians will ever figure things out and get their act together? 🤞
