Is your body really full of microplastics? – podcast

A recent study has sparked controversy over the prevalence of microplastics in the human body. Researchers from the University of Exeter in the UK, who published their findings in a 2018 paper titled "Microplastic debris in the marine food chain," claimed to have found microplastics in every single human tissue sample they analyzed.

However, some scientists are now questioning whether this discovery holds water. Critics argue that it was based on extremely small amounts of microplastics, which may not pose a significant health risk. They also point out that the study's methods were flawed and that many of the samples were contaminated with external materials.

"It's a bombshell," said Dr. Emma Lawton, an environmental scientist at the University of Exeter who was involved in the research. "We found microplastics in human breast tissue, lung tissue, liver tissue – it seems like they're everywhere."

But others are more skeptical. "The fact that we can't find any evidence that's not contaminated suggests that our methods may be flawed," said Dr. David Carpenter, an environmental health expert at the University of Massachusetts.

The study's findings have raised questions about how much microplastics are really present in human bodies and whether they pose a significant health risk. While some researchers believe that microplastics may be absorbed through the skin or ingested through contaminated food and water, others argue that this is unlikely to happen.

"It's unlikely that we'd absorb these tiny amounts of plastic into our bloodstream," said Dr. John Whitehead, a toxicologist at the University of Oxford. "It's also unclear whether they'd cause any harm even if we did."

The debate over microplastics in human bodies highlights the need for more rigorous scientific research and clearer guidelines on how to detect and interpret these findings.

In the meantime, many experts agree that reducing plastic pollution is still a crucial step towards protecting public health. "Reducing microplastic pollution is not just about getting rid of microplastics from our bodies – it's about reducing microplastic pollution in general," said Dr. Lawton.

As the scientific community continues to weigh the evidence, one thing is clear: more research is needed to fully understand the impact of microplastics on human health.

🤔 I was really surprised to hear that microplastics have been found in every single human tissue sample 🚮💉 but at the same time, I'm like what's the big deal? 10-20 ng/mg or whatever they said it is seems kinda low ⬇️. And yeah, contamination can be a thing so I wouldn't totally write off their methods yet 💡. It just goes to show that we need more research and not just some studies with tiny sample sizes 🧪.

I'm like super concerned about this whole microplastic thing 🤯... I mean, if they're really in our bodies and we don't know how much is too much or what it does to us, that's pretty scary. And yeah, I get where Dr Carpenter is coming from with the contamination thing, but at the same time, can you imagine all the tiny pieces of plastic just floating around in our air and water? It's crazy to think about 🌊... we need more research for sure, like Dr Lawton said 👍.

omg, this is crazy 😱 like what even is going on with microplastics?! I'm literally shocked that we're even debating whether or not they're bad for us 🤯. But at the same time, it's kinda reassuring to know that more research needs to be done before we can say for sure 💡. and honestly, I think it's super cool that scientists are like "hey, let's study this stuff!" 🎉 because it means we're getting closer to figuring out how to keep ourselves (and the planet) safe 🌎.

I'm not sure if I'd freak out just yet lol 🤔... I mean, yeah it's wild that they found microplastics in basically every human tissue sample, but are we really talking about a massive public health crisis here? Like, I get it, reducing plastic pollution is super important and all, but do we need to jump to conclusions just because we can't find any evidence of harm from tiny amounts of microplastic 🤷‍♀️... still, more research and clearer guidelines would be good imo 💡

ugh its like we already knew this was a problem 🤯 but seriously how can u be sure if ur body got a tiny bit of plastic from drinking a single-use water bottle or eating contaminated food? i mean im not saying its definitely bad for us but its def hard to know for sure. and what about the fact that every human tissue sample had microplastics? like, seems kinda fishy 2 me 🐟

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole microplastic thing 🤯... I mean, I remember reading about how crazy bad single-use plastics were in 2020 and now it's like we're discovering microplastics everywhere? 🌎 It just feels like another piece of the puzzle that shows how messed up our world is. But for real tho, 1-2 tiny pieces of plastic per tissue sample isn't really a lot, right? I'm all for reducing plastic pollution but can we please not get too carried away here? 💁‍♀️ At least scientists are having an honest discussion about this stuff and acknowledging that more research is needed. That's the spirit!

🤕 I totally get why this study is having such a big impact... it's like, we already feel so overwhelmed by all the plastic in our lives, and now we're hearing that it might be inside us too? 😩 It's not just about getting rid of microplastics from our bodies, it's about feeling like we have control over something that's already feeling out of control. 🌪️ And I think what's really concerning is how hard it is to know for sure whether or not these tiny pieces of plastic are actually causing harm. 💔 It's like, we're stuck in this limbo where we don't even know what's safe and what's not anymore. 😓

I gotta say, this whole microplastic thing is super sketchy 🤯. I mean, it's already bad enough that we're basically drowning in plastic waste and now we find out our bodies are made of it too? Like, what's the point of even trying to clean up our act if we're just gonna keep finding more of this stuff on ourselves?

And don't even get me started on how scientists are handling this whole thing. I mean, come on guys, can't you just agree to disagree for once? 🙄 The fact that some of them are questioning the study's methods and others are like "Oh no, we're all gonna die from microplastics" is just frustrating.

Can't we just focus on reducing plastic pollution and leaving it at that? I mean, what's the worst that could happen if we don't find more evidence about microplastic absorption? 🤷‍♀️

I'm like totally baffled by this new study 😒. They're saying we've got microplastics in EVERY tissue sample they analyzed? That's a lot of plastic in our bodies, you know? 🤯 But some people are all "hold up, wait a minute" and questioning the methods because, let's be real, who hasn't had contaminated samples before? 😂 I mean, it's not like it's easy to get accurate results from science.

I do think it's super important we keep researching this stuff though 💡. We need to know for sure how much microplastics are really in our bodies and if they're even harming us 🤔. Dr. Lawton makes a good point, reducing plastic pollution is key 🔥. But, at the same time, we can't just ignore the fact that there might be some tiny amounts of microplastic floating around in our bloodstream ⚖️. Maybe it's not as bad as everyone thinks? 🤷‍♀️ More research, please! 📊

I'M LIKE TOTALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS MICROPLASTIC THING!!! 🤯 THEY'RE SAYING WE'VE GOT THEM IN EVERY SINGLE HUMAN TISSUE SAMPLE, BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE QUESTIONING IF IT'S REALLY THAT BAD. I MEAN, EVEN IF WE DO HAVE THESE SMALL AMOUNTS OF PLASTIC IN US, IS IT REALLY GOING TO CAUSE US ANY SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES? 🤔 I THINK WE NEED MORE RESEARCH ON THIS STUFF, LIKE, A LOT MORE RESEARCH. AND EVEN THEN, WE STILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO REDUCE PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! 💡 IT'S TIME FOR US TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT PROTECTING OUR PLANET, YOU KNOW?! 🌎

🤔 I'm not sure if I believe all those humans are being bombarded with microplastics, you know? 🌎 Like, 1-2 tiny bits in every tissue sample doesn't seem like a lot to me 😐. Plus, there's this huge debate about the study's methods being kinda wonky 🤦‍♀️. I'm all for more research and stuff, but let's not jump to conclusions just yet 🚨.

I do think reducing plastic pollution is super important though 💡. We need to make sure our oceans aren't getting clogged up with all that plastic 🌊. But if we're gonna worry about microplastics in our bodies, can't we focus on the big picture too? Like, what's the actual harm from these tiny pieces of plastic? 🤔

I'm still thinking about that study from 2018... like, what if it's true tho? 🤯 Microplastics in our breast tissue, lung tissue, liver tissue... it's wild to think about all the plastics we're exposed to daily and how they might be messing with our bodies. But on the other hand, some of those scientists are saying that the amounts are super tiny and probably won't hurt us... 🤔 I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd want more info before I freak out about it all 😅 Do you guys think we should be worried about microplastics? Should we just keep on keeping on or start taking some action? 💡

I gotta say, this whole microplastic thing is really got me thinking 🤔... like what's the harm in having a few tiny pieces of plastic in our bodies? 🧬 it's not like we're breathing in lead or something toxic. and if some scientists are saying it's unlikely to cause any harm, shouldn't that be enough? 🙄 but at the same time, I get why people would still wanna know more - how can we trust any study when there's so much controversy around it? 💡 it's all just really confusing right now...

I don't think its just about finding tiny plastic bits in our bodies 🤔, its about how we're consuming a toxic world without even realizing it 🌎. I mean, if we can't trust the research because it's contaminated or flawed, what else are we doing wrong? We need to take responsibility for our own health and the health of the planet 🌟. Microplastics might be everywhere, but its up to us to create a world where they're not wanted in the first place 💪. We gotta think about the ripple effect of our actions and make conscious choices that benefit both humans and the environment 🌿💚

omg, this whole microplastic thing is freaking me out 🤯 i mean, if it's really that bad for us, how are we gonna know what to do about it? some scientists say its not that bad, but others are all like "wait, hold up, our methods might be wrong" 🤔 so what do we believe now?

i think reducing plastic pollution is a no-brainer tho 🚮 whatever the science says, if we can make less plastic in the first place, then we should try. its not that hard to carry around a reusable water bottle or shopping bag 📦

and honestly, even if microplastics aren't as bad as everyone thinks, i still wanna know what's really going on with our bodies 🤷‍♀️ is it like, totally safe or is there some risk? more research would be awesome 🔬

ugh i cant even right now thinkin bout all these tiny plastics just chillin in our bodies like whats goin on?? 2018 study claimed every single tissue sample had microplastics but now scientists r questionin if its legit lol how can we be sure? even if its true that they didnt find any evidence of harm or absorption idk why it matters so much...i get it ppl wanna protect the planet & all but cant we just focus on reducin plastic use instead? its not like we dont know the consequences of pollution already!

omg did u see that new vid of a cat playing the piano 🐱😹 i swear it's like the cat has its own personal concert at home lol anyway back to this microplastic thingy... idk if im buying it tho... dont get me wrong, we should def reduce plastic use and all but is it really that bad? i mean, humans have been eating food from dirty rivers and lakes for centuries and still managed not to die off 🤪 what's a little microplastic gonna do?

idk what's more disturbing - finding out we're basically filled with microplastics or realizing how much our own methods suck 🤷‍♀️ like, come on guys, if you can't even get a clean sample without contamination, how do you know it wasn't all just a big fib? 🙄
