'It's just surreal': jubilant Macclesfield fans reflect on FA Cup heroics

Macclesfield FC has pulled off the greatest shock in FA Cup history, knocking out Premier League team Crystal Palace and becoming the first non-league opposition to beat cupholders since 1909. The Cheshire market town club's part-time squad of PE teachers, podcasters, and property developers will add one more title: giant-killers.

The victory caps a phoenix-like rise from oblivion barely five years after Macclesfield Town FC was wound up by the high court with debts of over ยฃ500,000. Lifelong fan Richard Snape, who has been watching his beloved Silkmen since 1987, was back at the 6,000-capacity Moss Rose Stadium on Sunday to buy souvenir scarves and check if it was all just a dream. "Last night I kept thinking I'm just going to wake up and it's all a dream," he said. "It's unbelievable. I still haven't got over it, to be honest. For quite a few days now, it will just be surreal."

The team's heroics were led by captain Paul Dawson, who scored the only goal of the game despite being injured just minutes after coming on. Macclesfield's triumph was all the more poignant as it came only weeks after the death of their 21-year-old forward, Ethan McLeod, in a car accident on the way back from a game.

The celebrations lasted long into the night, with many of Macclesfield's jubilant players out until the early hours celebrating with fans. The town was packed with pubs and even Crystal Palace fans joined in the celebrations, with one fan heard singing "We were shit, we were shit, we were shit." Tom Broadhead, a 35-year-old local who designs and sells merchandise bearing his hometown's name and heritage, proudly showed off a Macclesfield FC jumper with a scarf embroidered across the front. He hopes the FA Cup heroics will prove infectious and inspire confidence across the town.

Macclesfield's manager, John Rooney, said: "What we did will outlive us all." The club's head of sponsorships, Bob Trafford, echoed this sentiment, saying that the victory was a reward for all the hard work. As one fan noted, Macclesfield FC is no longer just about football - it's about the art of the possible and striving to achieve great things despite adversity.

Omg what an epic shock ๐Ÿ˜ฎ! I mean I've been following this team since they were in div 3 and you'd think they're a joke now ๐Ÿคฃ but nope, these guys are on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ! It's amazing for the town too, it's brought everyone together. I was there at Moss Rose on Sunday and it was like nothing I've ever seen before ๐ŸŽ‰. The atmosphere was electric and the fans were going wild ๐Ÿ˜†. And can we talk about Paul Dawson? What a legend he is ๐Ÿ’ช. His injury could've been so much worse but he still manages to score the winning goal ๐Ÿ‘. It's definitely not just about the football, it's about the spirit of the town ๐ŸŒŸ and I'm so hyped for them now ๐Ÿ”ฅ! They're gonna be huge ๐Ÿคฉ

I'm totally stoked for Macclesfield FC ๐Ÿคฉ! Their FA Cup win is a massive deal, especially considering they're from non-league opposition ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I mean, who would've thought that a part-time squad of PE teachers, podcasters, and property devs could take down a Premier League team like Crystal Palace? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ It's all about the underdog story, you know? And to make it even more amazing, they did it just weeks after losing their young forward Ethan McLeod in a car accident ๐Ÿค•. That makes it an even bigger achievement, imo. The celebrations are totally justified too - who wouldn't want to party with a giant-killing team like that? ๐ŸŽ‰

I'm not sure I agree with how epic this victory is ๐Ÿค”... like, I mean, it's a big win and all, but 1909 was actually a really important year for English football history? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Did they even play in the FA Cup back then? Maybe they just wanted to make themselves sound more legendary than they are ๐Ÿ˜œ.

And yeah, it's sad that Ethan McLeod passed away and stuff, but I'm not sure it's fair to say his death is what made this win so poignant ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. That's a bit dramatic if you ask me... also, Paul Dawson was injured like 2 minutes into the game? How did he even get on the field then? ๐Ÿคฏ

I guess what I'm saying is that Macclesfield FC might be a big deal now, but let's not overhype this too much ๐Ÿ˜…. They're still just a bunch of part-time players playing in a league they shouldn't be in. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that they pulled off the win and all, but I'm just keeping things real, you feel? ๐Ÿ‘Š

OMG, can you even imagine?! ๐Ÿคฏ They did it! ๐Ÿ˜ This is like something out of a movie! I'm literally speechless right now. Macclesfield FC going up against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup? It's like David vs Goliath, but they came out on top! ๐Ÿ’ช And that captain Paul Dawson, scoring the only goal despite being injured... what a legend! ๐Ÿ™Œ

I mean, I know it's not just about football for Macclesfield FC - it's about the community coming together and believing in themselves. They've been through so much since they were wound up barely five years ago, and to see them do this is just incredible. ๐Ÿ’• I'm sure Ethan McLeod would be proud too (RIP). This is like a fairy tale for the town of Macclesfield! ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ Can't wait to see what's next for these underdogs! ๐Ÿ‘

idk why people are making such a big deal out of this... yeah i know its crazy that a non-league team beat a premier league one but lets be real, crystal palace has been struggling like everyone else in the prem ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. macclesfield is a small town with a huge heart and some lucky people who just happened to play well on the day. it's not like they're gonna go on to win the league or something ๐Ÿ˜‚. the fact that ethan mcleod passed away is sad but we should be celebrating their win for the community, not just the team ๐Ÿ™. it's a great feel-good story and i'm happy for the fans but lets keep things in perspective ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿ† they actually did it lol macclesfield is like the ultimate underdog story i'm shook that they beat crystal palace on the cup holders...it's crazy how far this small town has come from being in debt ยฃ500k just 5 years ago ๐Ÿค‘

๐Ÿ† OMG I'm still in shock!!! Who would've thought that a non-league team like Macclesfield FC could take down a Premier League team? ๐Ÿคฏ It's insane! And the fact that they were down 21 years ago and almost got dissolved because of debt, now they're FA Cup heroes ๐Ÿ™Œ It's like their story is a real-life Cinderella tale. I'm so happy for the fans and the town, it must be an incredible feeling to live through this moment. ๐Ÿ’– The team's determination and resilience are truly inspiring, especially after losing one of their own players just weeks ago ๐Ÿค•. This win will definitely go down in history and show that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฏ Can you believe this?! Macclesfield FC has pulled off the biggest upset in FA Cup history! I mean, who would've thought that a part-time squad of teachers, podcasters, and property devs would take down Crystal Palace? ๐Ÿค“ The team's underdog story is so inspiring - from being wound up by the high court just 5 years ago to becoming giant-killers now. It's like they say, "the art of the possible" ๐Ÿ’ช. I'm loving this vibe, and it's not just about football anymore, it's about the power of community and perseverance ๐ŸŽ‰. Who knows what's next for these incredible players? They're already heroes in my book ๐Ÿ˜Š!

๐Ÿ˜Š I'm still in shock after reading about Macclesfield FC's historic win over Crystal Palace! 1909 was a long time ago, but it's amazing that they've made history again ๐Ÿ™Œ. The team's come from nothing to taking down a Premier League team - it's like something out of a movie ๐ŸŽฅ. You can feel the emotions and pride of their fans, especially Richard Snape who's been supporting them since 1987 โค๏ธ. It's not just about the football, though - this win has brought the whole town together ๐ŸŒŸ. I'm sure Tom Broadhead's merchandise is flying off the shelves now ๐Ÿ˜†. This is what makes footy so special - the underdog story, the community spirit... it's pure magic โœจ. Macclesfield FC's manager, John Rooney, is right - this win will outlast us all ๐Ÿ’ซ.

Man I cant believe what just happened! Macclesfield FC, they're like from nowhere man! ๐Ÿคฏ They got crushed by Crystal Palace in a normal game but then BAM! They knock them out of FA Cup. Its crazy thinking about it ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. Their team is so underdog story, just five years ago they were bankrupt and now they're giants-killers ๐Ÿ’ช. I remember the good old days when teams from non-league could actually win big tournaments ๐Ÿ“š. This will inspire confidence in their town and get everyone talking about Macclesfield FC again ๐Ÿ‘.

man this is insane ๐Ÿคฏ... like who would've thought a team made up of PE teachers podcasters and property devs would take down a Premier League team? ๐Ÿ™Œ it's crazy how far they've come from being wound up 5 years ago, that ยฃ500k debt was a huge blow ๐Ÿ˜ฉ but i guess you could say they've proved all the naysayers wrong now. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ the fact that they were led by a player who scored the winning goal despite being injured just minutes after coming on is just mental ๐Ÿ’ช. and the celebrations, wow, it's not every day you see Crystal Palace fans singing about how shit their team is ๐Ÿ˜‚. kudos to the whole squad and management for pulling off this historic win ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, can you believe it?! Macclesfield FC went from basically nothin' to takin' down Crystal Palace in the FA Cup! It's like somethin' outta a movie, bro. ๐ŸŽฅ They're talkin' about bein' giant-killers now, but let's be real, they're still just a bunch of passionate fans with a decent squad and some clever management. ๐Ÿค“ Still, I gotta give 'em props for the heart and determination - it's awesome to see a team from nowhere take on the big boys and come out on top.

But what really gets me is the backstory here. From bein' wound up by the high court just five years ago to this incredible FA Cup win... it's like they're proof that even in the darkest times, there's always hope for a comeback. ๐ŸŒŸ And now, with Ethan McLeod's memory still fresh in their minds, this victory is all the more special.

I dunno, man, I'm gettin' chills just thinkin' about it. Maybe this is what happens when you've got a town that truly believes in its team? Maybe it's proof that football can be more than just a game - it can bring people together and inspire 'em to be their best selves.

Anyway, congrats to Macclesfield FC on this epic win! You guys are the real deal now. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

idk if i believe all this hype ๐Ÿค”... like yeah they won against crystal palace but that was only 1 game right? its not like they're gonna keep winning in the league, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ on the other hand, i'm also kinda impressed by how far they've come from being wound up and almost gone out of business. it shows that even when all hope seems lost, something amazing can happen... but idk, maybe im just reading too much into this one win ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ oh my gosh, can you even believe this?! Macclesfield FC totally slayed Crystal Palace in the FA Cup! ๐Ÿ† I mean, who would've thought a non-league team could take down cupholders like that? It's truly insane! The fact that they're from Cheshire and barely 5 years ago they were wound up with debt of ยฃ500k just shows how far they've come. Their fans are so proud and it's amazing to see the whole town celebrating together ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘. And poor Ethan McLeod, RIP ๐Ÿค• but I'm sure his memory will live on through this incredible achievement. What an inspiration for underdogs everywhere! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ˜Š oh man can you believe it?! macclesfield fc going from almost being out of existance to pulling off the biggest fa cup upset EVER! ๐Ÿคฏ i mean, 500k debts and all they did was knock out crystal palace? that's insane! ๐Ÿ˜‚ it's not just about the team either, it's about the whole town coming together and proving that even in adversity, you can achieve greatness. ๐Ÿ™Œ and yeah, it's especially sweet after losing a player just weeks ago ๐Ÿ’” but i guess that's what makes this victory so special ๐ŸŽ‰ macclesfield fc is definitely on the map now ๐Ÿ˜Š

man i cant even right now lol ๐Ÿคฏ macclesfield fc has literally gone from nothing to somethin in like 5 yrs they went from bein wound up to makin history, thats insane... it feels like they're playin in a video game or somethin ๐Ÿ’ฅ they got a part-time squad but they made it work and its not just about the players, its about the whole town comin together and believin in themselves. reminds me of when the chelsea u23s pulled off that crazy comeback against man united back in 2009 ๐Ÿ† maybe this is the start of somethin special for macclesfield...

OMG, can you even believe what just happened?! ๐Ÿคฏ Macclesfield FC is literally a giant-killer! They went up against Crystal Palace, one of the top Premier League teams, and came out on top. I mean, I've seen some crazy results in football history, but this takes the cake. The fact that they were part-time players who hadn't even won their league for years just makes it even more amazing.

I'm low-key obsessed with Paul Dawson, the captain who scored the only goal despite being injured. He's literally a hero! And to make it even sweeter, they did it after losing one of their own players in a car accident just weeks ago. It's like they're defying all odds and proving that anything is possible.

I'm loving how the whole town is coming together to celebrate this win. The pubs are still buzzing with fans, and even Crystal Palace supporters were joining in on the fun! ๐ŸŽ‰ This is more than just a football result โ€“ it's a testament to the power of perseverance and teamwork. Macclesfield FC is definitely going to be remembered for this moment forever, and I'm so here for it ๐Ÿ˜

I'm telling you, this is gonna be short-lived ๐Ÿ™„. One of these days they'll get exposed as a bunch of part-time amateurs playing with borrowed equipment. The fact that Crystal Palace got knocked out doesn't even surprise me, they've been struggling for years anyway โšฝ๏ธ. And what's with all the hype about Macclesfield FC being giant-killers? They were just lucky, plain and simple. Paul Dawson scoring the goal while injured is exactly what I'd expect from a team that's been coasting on mediocrity. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see them have some success for once, but I'm not holding my breath for a repeat performance ๐Ÿ’”.
