'I've played a lot of sneery bastards': Roger Allam on bad singing, big paydays and Elgar's level of 'gitacity'

Roger Allam, the man behind Javert in Les Misérables, recalls his experience of singing badly for The Choral. He describes attempting to sing in the film as "terribly difficult" due to having a baritone voice and not singing for 15 years. This led him to be relieved that it had to be bad.

The Alan Bennett-scripted film is set in a Yorkshire factory town on the cusp of huge societal change, hollowed out by grief as its young men die in foreign fields. Allam plays the gentle local mill owner who funds the choral society and finds a way to assuage his own grief. The piece features Elgar's oratorio The Dream of Gerontius, which initially intimidated him but proved exciting to sing.

Allam reflects on his experience playing Javert in Les Misérables, attributing its huge success to making people feel good about their moral character and stirring emotions through spectacular melodrama. He also mentions his roles in Game of Thrones, where he played a suave but beleaguered Tory MP, and Radio 4's Cabin Pressure.

Allam expresses discomfort being simply himself on television or participating in panel shows, preferring to focus on his craft as an actor. He feels most kinship with the character DI Fred Thursday in Endeavour, who is from his own working-class background.

The Choral taps into Allam's interest in exploring past lives of everyday people and creating beauty amidst hardship. He even contemplates joining a choir or taking singing lessons to discover if his voice still exists.

😊 I'm like "yaaas, Roger Allam is my ultimate hero!" 🙌 I mean, the guy's been in so many iconic roles - from Javert in Les Mis to suave Tory MP in Game of Thrones 🤴♂️... and he's still down-to-earth about it all. I love how he says he'd rather focus on his craft than just being himself on TV 📺. I'm intrigued by this new film, The Choral - the fact that it explores everyday people's lives and creates beauty amidst hardship really resonates with me ❤️. And can we talk about Roger Allam's voice? 😍 A baritone voice can be tough to work with, but he's like "oh well, I'll just sing badly" 🤣... kind of like how I am when I'm trying to cook dinner and everything ends up burnt 🍳. Anyway, I'm definitely looking into this film and maybe even checking out some choirs or singing lessons 🎶

I feel bad for Roger Allam when he talks about not being able to sing in the film adaptation of The Choral 🤦‍♂️. I mean, who hasn't had those moments where you're worried about sounding terrible? But it's cool that he was relieved it could be really bad - at least that way he knew his voice wouldn't be the focal point 😂.

It's interesting to see how Allam got into acting and what projects resonate with him. I love how he mentions his connection to the character DI Fred Thursday, who seems like a real underdog 🙌. And can you blame him for wanting to explore past lives of everyday people? It sounds like The Choral is tapping into something deeper than just entertainment... maybe it's a way for us to process our emotions and find beauty in tough times 💕.

I think it's pretty cool that Roger Allam is talking about being open about struggling with his singing voice... I mean, he literally sang badly in the film 🎶😳. It's like, we all have our own struggles and imperfections, right? And for someone who plays such iconic characters, it's actually refreshing to see him be so honest about it. Plus, his experiences playing Javert, Game of Thrones, and other roles are pretty interesting... I feel like he has a great perspective on how to tap into the emotions of a character without being too over-the-top 🤔. And who knows, maybe he'll even join a choir or take singing lessons - that'd be awesome! 🎵

omg lol can u blame roger allam for wanting 2 be himself on tv 🤣 i mean, being typecast as javert & game of thrones is like, so not him 😂 anywayz, sounds like The Choral's gonna b a super emotional rollercoaster with Elgar & all that drama 🎶 gotta respect the guy tryna find his voice after 15 yrs tho! 🤷‍♂️ maybe he'll even join a choir & bring some much-needed calm 2 the screen 🙏

I feel bad for Roger Allam, the guy's got range from Javert to Game of Thrones, what's next? 😂 Maybe he can sing like his character DI Fred Thursday in Endeavour and bring some Yorkshire charm to The Choral 🤣. I mean, who wouldn't want to hear Elgar's oratorio with a gruff mill owner trying to find solace? It's like the ultimate ' singing for my supper' story – 'Please don't notice how bad I sound, I'll give you £5 for that pint!'

I mean, I'm all for celebrating our local heroes and bringing arts into the community 🎶. The Choral sounds like it could be really powerful in shedding light on these under-recognized stories of everyday folk 🙏. But let's be real, it's also a bit worrying that they're relying so heavily on Elgar's oratorio - I mean, I get why it's grand and all, but can't we explore some more modern sounds? And what about the fact that Roger Allam is getting to sing at last? 🎤 Fingers crossed he doesn't sound too awful...

I feel bad for Roger Allam 😊, he had to sing like a cat in a bathtub to be part of The Choral 🎤. Can you imagine having to do that after 15 years without singing? 🙅‍♂️ At least it was Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, something he found exciting instead of intimidating. I'm more impressed by his work on Game of Thrones and Cabin Pressure, those roles are so cool 👍. I wish he'd focus on TV shows instead of panel shows though, you know, just be himself 🙏. Maybe joining a choir or taking singing lessons is a great idea, who knows what hidden talents we all have? 🎵

😊🎤 the way Roger Allam talks about his singing experience is relatable, you know? like he's actually admitting that his baritone voice made it tough for him in the film, and that's something i can definitely relate to 🤣. also its cool how he says the dream of gerontius was exciting to sing even though it intimidated him at first...i feel like thats me with some classical music too, sounds like hes trying to find beauty amidst hardship which is really inspiring 💕

Man I feel so bad for him 🤦‍♂️, trying to sing in that film after not doing it in 15 years is like asking someone who's never ridden a bike to do a marathon 🏃‍♂️, gotta respect the struggle. And can you imagine having to perform Elgar's Dream of Gerontius with a baritone voice? That's like trying to play a soprano part in La Bohème 😂. On a more serious note, I love how he talks about The Choral and how it allows him to tap into people's lives and create beauty from hardship that resonates so deeply 💕. He should defo join a choir, his voice would be amazing 🎶!

I love how these actors get to explore different roles and bring depth to their characters 🤩. Roger Allam seems like such a humble guy, I'm impressed by how he owns up to not being the best singer in The Choral 😂. It's great that he's getting to do what he loves and express himself through his craft. His background in working-class Yorkshire is really interesting, it must be really inspiring for him to play characters like DI Fred Thursday who are from similar walks of life 🙏. And I'm glad to see him prioritizing his acting over other gigs, let's keep seeing more of his talent on screen! 👍

idk how some ppl think Javert wasnt intense lol! 🤣 the way he just hunts down Jean Valjean like a dog in a slaughterhouse is straight fire 💥 but yeah I can see why Allam might be uncomfortable playing himself on TV, that sounds super awkward fam 😂

🎵 I feel bad for Roger Allam, singing like he did must've been super stressful especially with having that baritone voice 😩, but it's amazing how much emotion he got from singing Elgar's Dream of Gerontius 🙏. You know what's wild? He loved the dramatic aspects of playing Javert and Game of Thrones' suave MP, but being himself on TV just doesn't feel natural to him 🤔. I think that's totally cool though, focusing on his craft and finding solace in acting is so important for people who struggle with self-expression 💖. Maybe taking singing lessons or joining a choir could be the next step for him, who knows? 😉
