James Beard names 23 Chicago semifinalists for food awards, including EL Ideas and Kasama

Chicago's culinary scene has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation as 23 semifinalists for this year's prestigious food awards. Among them are EL Ideas, a Near West Side eatery serving eclectic American fare from chef Phillip Foss, and Kasama, a Ukrainian Village restaurant that recently earned its second Michelin star.

The list includes notable chefs such as Diana Dávila of Mi Tocaya Antojeria in Logan Square and Zachary Engel of Galit in Lincoln Park, both of whom have been selected as semifinalists for Outstanding Chef. Chicago is also home to nine regional chefs on the semifinalist list for Best Regional Chef, including Thai Dang of HaiSous.

The James Beard Awards celebrate excellence in American cuisine, recognizing outstanding restaurants, chefs, and hospitality providers across the country. Last year's winners included West Loop dining bar Kumiko and chef Noah Sandoval of fine dining restaurant Oriole.

This year's semifinalists will be announced on March 31, with the awards ceremony set to take place on June 15 at Chicago's Lyric Opera House. The list includes a diverse range of categories, from Outstanding Restaurant and Emerging Chef to Best New Restaurant and Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.

omg can't believe our city is killin' it in the food scene! el ideas & kasama making the cut is amazing, but what's up with no more spots for south side restaurants? think there should be a separate category just for neighborhoods like south east chicago where the authentic flavors are poppin

OMG, yay for ChiTown's food scene!!! 😍 I'm so hyped that EL Ideas and Kasama made the cut! Phillip Foss is a genius chef and his eclectic American fare is everything 🤩. And Diana Dávila is killing it at Mi Tocaya Antojeria too 🌮. Zachary Engel's Galit is another fave of mine, love their creative cocktails 🍹. This James Beard Awards ceremony is going to be SO lit 🎉 can't wait to see who wins! 💖

I'm so confused about this news 🤔... I mean, isn't it awesome that our city is getting some recognition for its food scene? 🎉 EL Ideas and Kasama deserve all the credit, they're serving up some crazy good eats! 👌 But at the same time, I'm thinking... what's with all these categories? Can't we just have one award for Best Restaurant or something? 😩 And why do we need a separate category for Emerging Chef? Doesn't that just make it harder for newbies to get noticed? 🤷‍♀️ On the other hand, I'm excited to see Thai Dang from HaiSous on the list - he's been making waves in the culinary scene for ages! 🌊 And I guess what really gets me is... why do we have to wait until March 31 to find out who else made the cut? Can't they just give us a little teaser or something? 😒

I'm super hyped for our city's culinary scene! 🤩 Chicago is killing it in the food world right now. It's awesome to see restaurants like EL Ideas and Kasama getting recognition for their amazing food. Phillip Foss is a total genius with his eclectic American fare, and Diana Dávila is slaying her game at Mi Tocaya Antojeria too! 🤯 Zachary Engel is another one to watch out for - he's doing incredible things at Galit.

I love how the James Beard Awards are all about celebrating excellence in American cuisine. It's not just about fancy restaurants, but also about supporting up-and-coming chefs and foodies. And I'm so stoked that our city has such a diverse range of categories to choose from - it makes everyone feel included.

March 31 can't come soon enough when we get the list of semifinalists! Who's your favorite chef or restaurant in Chicago? 🤔 Let's keep cheering on our culinary heroes and celebrating all the amazing food we have here.

I think some of these restaurants are getting a bit too much attention 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, EL Ideas and Kasama sound awesome, but why do we need another Michelin star? 🤑 We already have enough fancy awards for the same old places. And what's up with all these celebrity chefs? Can't they just focus on making good food instead of being famous for it? 🤷‍♂️ I'm also not impressed that there are only 9 regional chefs on the list out of who knows how many people in this city. Where's the diversity, right? And what about all the up-and-coming restaurants that don't get any love at all? 📦 It just feels like the same old clique getting together to pat themselves on the back.

🍴👏 I'm not surprised to see Chicago's culinary scene being recognized globally 🌎. The city has always been known for its vibrant food culture, and it's exciting to see restaurants like EL Ideas and Kasama making a name for themselves on the James Beard Foundation's list 💼. Chef Phillip Foss's eclectic American fare at EL Ideas is a great example of the diversity and creativity that Chicago's chefs are bringing to the table 🌮. The recognition of Thai Dang from HaiSous as a regional chef semifinalist is also noteworthy, highlighting the importance of underrepresented voices in our food scene 🙌. Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing the full list of winners announced in March and celebrating the best of Chicago's culinary world with the awards ceremony on June 15 💫.

🍴 So it's no surprise that Chi-Town is killin' the food game right now! 23 semifinalists for James Beard Awards? That's crazy! 🤯 El Ideas and Kasama are definitely two of the top spots, but what I'm excited about is seeing all these talented chefs from different backgrounds get recognition. Diana Dávila's got a solid track record with Mi Tocaya Antojeria, and Zachary Engel's Galit in Lincoln Park is supposed to be on point too! 🤤 And Thai Dang of HaiSous bringing the heat in the Best Regional Chef category? Yaaas, more diversity = more awesome food options for us! 😋 The fact that there are categories like Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker shows they're thinking outside the box. Can't wait to see who'll take home those awards this June! 📆

omg I'm so excited for chicago food scene 🤩! i was just thinking about trying out that new restaurant in the west loop with all the rave reviews 📣 i've heard great things about el ideas, never been but their menu looks super interesting 🍴 and kasama is another one on my list, that second michelin star is a big deal 💸 can't wait to see who wins the james beard awards this year, zachary engel's restaurant galit sounds so good 🤤 do they have any vegan options? 🌱

omg u guys!! chicago is killin it in the food scene!!! i mean, el ideas & kasama makin it into james beard semifinals? thats dope! philip foss's eclectic american fare & zac engel's galit menu got some serious talent goin on. & dont even get me started on thai dang's hai sous - that place is hella good!! chicago's representin so hard this year, gotta be hyped for the awards ceremony at lyric opera house. cant wait to see who takes home those james beard medals 🤩🍴👏

I think it's awesome that Chicago's got some top-notch foodies making it into the James Beard Awards semifinals 🤩! I mean, EL Ideas and Kasama are both killing it in their respective fields - Phillip Foss's eclectic American fare is always on point, and Kasama's Michelin-star win was well-deserved. And nice to see Diana Dávila and Zachary Engel getting some love too - they're definitely two of the most talented chefs in Chicago right now 🙌.

But what I think is even more interesting is that this list has a ton of regional representation - Thai Dang's got his spot on the Best Regional Chef list, which is awesome for the local food scene. And it just goes to show that Chicago's culinary scene is really on the rise - last year's winners like Kumiko and Oriole were no surprise, but this new crop of semifinalists is giving me hope for what's next 🤞. Bring on March 31 and the rest of the awards process! 👏

I'm loving how Chicago's culinary scene is killing it! I mean, who wouldn't want to dine at EL Ideas or Kasama? Phillip Foss' eclectic American fare is giving me all the feels 🤩 and Kasama's second Michelin star is well-deserved - have you tried their pierogies? Diana Dávila's Mi Tocaya Antojeria is also a fave of mine, her Mexican cuisine is on point! And it's awesome that Thai Dang from HaiSous made the list for Best Regional Chef. The James Beard Awards are all about celebrating American cuisine, so I'm excited to see who'll take home the awards this year! 🍴
