Jamiroquai review – hat-sporting acid jazz superstars are slick but lack substance

Jamiroquai's Glasgow show was a slick affair, with the quintessential 90s acid-jazz outfit bringing their signature blend of flashy production and catchy hooks to the stage. However, as they navigated their decades-spanning setlist, it became clear that some of the genre's most compelling elements were being lost in translation.

The band's live arrangements often felt overly polished, with Jay Kay, the sole founding member and self-proclaimed hat enthusiast, stuck at a safe distance from the crowd. His energetic stage presence was evident, but his tendency to bounce on monitors rather than engaging with the audience suggested that he was missing an opportunity to connect with the fans.

The show's strongest moments came when the band's sound issues were minimal, allowing them to shine in tracks like "Little L" and "Seven Days in Sunny June." These songs benefited from more stripped-back arrangements and acoustic instrumentation, which highlighted their organic charm. Jay Kay's impressive vocal range was also on full display, particularly in early single "Too Young to Die."

However, despite the band's technical proficiency, some of Jamiroquai's most iconic tracks fell flat due to over-reliance on flashy production. The sweeping strings and beats that defined songs like "Canned Heat" and "Disco Stays the Same" were often drowned out by the mix, leaving them feeling shallow and lacking in substance.

The problem was further exacerbated by the band's live arrangements, which sometimes felt too rigid and stage-managed to allow for a more dynamic performance. The use of multiple levels on stage created a sense of distance between Jay Kay and the audience, limiting his ability to fully engage with the crowd.

Ultimately, Jamiroquai's Glasgow show was a testament to their enduring appeal as a live act, but also highlighted the challenges that come with being a legacy group. While they may not be pushing the boundaries of their sound in new and exciting ways, they remain able to deliver a polished and professional performance that will continue to delight their devoted fanbase.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many ppl are obsessed w/ these 90s acid-jazz outfits 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Jay Kay's got some sick vocals 💥, but the production is just too over-the-top for me. I mean, can't we appreciate music when it's stripped-back & acoustic? 🎸 Those Jamiroquai shows sound like they're all about flashy lights & fancy beats, but where's the soul in that? 🌟

🎸 I gotta say, Jamiroquai's live show is always a wild ride, but this time around it felt like they were stuck between being too slick for their own good 🤦‍♂️. I mean, Jay Kay's energy is undeniable, but when he's stuck behind that monitor, it feels like he's not really connecting with the crowd 👥. And don't even get me started on how much of their iconic sound gets lost in translation 🎧. They're still putting on a great show, but it feels like they're playing to a different beat sometimes 💃. I think part of the problem is that they've been doing this for so long, they know exactly what works and what doesn't, but sometimes you wish they'd take some risks and try something new 🤔. Still, when it all comes together, Jamiroquai's live show is truly unforgettable 🔥!

🤔 I was there at the Glasgow show and gotta say, Jamiroquai's still got it... but they're not gonna blow anyone away with innovation like they did back in the day 🎸. Jay Kay's vocals are still insane tho! 🙌 They need to dial back on the production a notch or two and let their live arrangements breathe for real 💨. I mean, we all love "Canned Heat" as much as the next person, but it feels like they're more focused on looking slick than actually getting lost in the moment with the crowd 🤷‍♂️. Still, fans will love 'em no matter what, and that's what matters most 😊

🎸 Jamiroquai's show was definitely slick but I felt like it was missing that special something. Jay Kay's stage presence is always energetic but sometimes he feels too safe behind the monitors 📺. The band's got some amazing tracks like "Little L" and "Seven Days in Sunny June" that really shine when it's just them and their instruments 🎶. But when they rely too much on production, it can feel shallow 🤔. They're still a great live act but sometimes I wish they'd take more risks and push the boundaries of their sound 🔥

I dunno about this Jamiroquai show 🤔... I mean, they're still got the catchy hooks and all that, but sometimes it felt like they were relying too much on fancy production stuff rather than just playing the songs straight up. Jay Kay's vocals are insane btw, love how he can go from soft to crazy in like 2 seconds ⏱️. But yeah, when they toned down the arrangement and just let the music breathe, that's when it really felt special 🎵. They're still got the magic, but I'm not sure if it's as raw and real as their earlier stuff 🤷‍♂️

omg i loved jamiroquai back in the 90s but this show was kinda underwhelming 🤔 they need to find a balance between flashy production and actual human connection on stage 🎶 jay kay's voice is still so iconic tho!!! 💁‍♂️ what do u guys think, should they stick with their classic sound or try to innovate more? 🎵

the music industry is all about evolution 🎵💻 it's cool that jamiroquai is still rocking out decades later but sometimes u gotta wonder if they're still pushing the right buttons 🤔🎶 the 90s acid-jazz vibes are so iconic but when ur live show feels too polished and safe, it can be a bit meh 😐 maybe they should take some risks and try new things? 🔄 like who says u cant rock out with a full band on stage? 🤩

omg I was SOOO excited to see jamiroquai live 🤩 their energy on stage is just infectious, but I feel like jay kay's gotta find that balance between being the star of the show and connecting with the crowd, you know? I love how they played "little l" and it was like the whole audience was singing along in unison 🎶 those stripped-back arrangements really brought out the soul in their music. but yeah, some of their iconic tracks felt a bit lost in translation 🤔 maybe they should mix it up more often? still though, jamiroquai's always gonna be my fave and i'll follow them anywhere 💖
