Kazakh middleweight boxer Janibek Alimkhanuly has failed a drugs test before his scheduled unification bout against Erislandy Lara. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) detected the banned substance, meldonium, in Alimkhanuly's 'A' sample.
Alimkhanuly, who holds the IBF and WBO titles, will be replaced in the bout by Venezuelan boxer Johan Gonzalez. Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), who are promoting the event, made the announcement on Wednesday.
Alimkhanuly tested positive for meldonium after his last fight in April, but he claimed that Vada's findings were a mistake and requested a retest of his 'B' sample. However, PBC has refused to wait for the results of the retest before making the substitution with Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, who has won 36 of his 40 bouts, will face Lara in the undercard event at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. The bout is scheduled to take place on December 3rd.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) banned meldonium in 2016 due to its potential performance-enhancing effects.
