Japan’s sumo association turns 100 – but the sport’s rituals have a much older role shaping ideas about the country

I'm not sure about this idea that sumo needs to 'evolve' just because it's not cool anymore 🤔. I mean, the sport is an important part of Japanese culture and has been around for thousands of years - can't we appreciate that without trying to fit it into some modern Western mold? And yeah, maybe the governing body should address the issues with diversity and inclusion, but let's not forget sumo's history of being super welcoming to foreigners 🤝. Take baseball, for example - it became popular in Japan because of its modernizing influence, but it still had a strong connection to American culture. Can't we just appreciate sumo for what it is, without trying to change it? 🤷‍♂️

idk why sumo needs 2 b rebranded 🤔... its all about respect 4 tradition & community 💪. dont get me wrong, i think its cool that japanese culture is gaining traction worldwide, but sumo wrestling's got its own identity now 🌸. cant just change it 2 fit w/ modern standards 😂. its like trying 2 put a square peg in a round hole 🤯. sumo needs 2 be authentic 2 itself b4 trying 2 appeal 2 the masses 👀.

sumo needs to evolve 🔄💪 or it'll be left behind baseball is proof that sports can break down cultural barriers 🤝🏃‍♂️ japan has a lot to offer but its image needs a refresh 🌸👀 foreign wrestlers are few and far between for now 🚫 women in sumo need more support 🙌 but sumo's traditional culture is also what makes it unique 🥋💥 maybe it can find a balance between old and new ⚖️ or just stick to the tournament ring 🏆👊
