Judge allows offshore windfarm halted by Trump to resume construction

Federal Judge Clears Way for Empire Wind Offshore Wind Project to Resume Construction Amid Trump Administration's Halt Order.

A federal judge has allowed New York-based offshore wind farm developer Equinor to continue construction on its Empire Wind project, just days after the Trump administration issued an order to pause it. The decision comes as part of a growing controversy surrounding national security concerns and renewable energy projects along the east coast.

Judge Carl J Nichols, an appointee of President Donald Trump, ruled that construction could proceed while he reviews the merits of the government's halt order. In his ruling, the judge criticized the government for failing to adequately respond to key points raised by Equinor in its court filings, including concerns about procedural irregularities.

"We welcome this decision and will continue to work collaboratively with authorities," said David Schoetz, an Equinor spokesperson. The company's Empire Wind project is approximately 60% complete and designed to power over half a million homes.

The halt order, issued by the Trump administration on Christmas Eve, was met with swift resistance from developers and states. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the halt order "bogus" and said she had not been informed of any national security threats off the coast of New York.

"This is a victory for renewable energy and for our state's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions," Hochul said in a statement.

The decision comes as part of a growing trend of courts blocking or overturning Trump administration orders on renewable energy projects. Just last week, a federal judge ruled that another offshore wind project, Revolution Wind, could resume construction after the government failed to adequately explain its reasoning for halting it.

As tensions between the Trump administration and environmental groups continue, industry insiders say the global offshore wind market is expected to grow in 2024, with China leading the charge. The sector has made significant strides in recent years, with nearly all new electricity added to grids last year coming from renewable sources.

However, opponents of offshore wind projects, including some in New Jersey, have expressed skepticism about the risks posed by these energy developments. "We urge officials to immediately appeal these adverse rulings and seek to halt all work pending appellate review," said Robin Shaffer, president of Protect Our Coast New Jersey.

I don’t usually comment but I think this is a big deal πŸ€”. Like, imagine if the government just stopped a whole project like that without even talking to the people who are going to benefit from it? It's crazy how much power they have, right? πŸ’₯ Anyway, I think this decision by Judge Carl J Nichols is a good one – he was pretty harsh on the government for not doing their homework before halting the Empire Wind project. And honestly, I'm a little surprised that the Trump admin didn't have more solid reasons to stop it in the first place... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Oh, and I love how New York Governor Hochul is all about renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions – it's like, finally some leadership on this stuff! 🌟

πŸ€” just saw that a judge allowed Equinor's Empire Wind project to continue construction despite the Trump admin's halt order... feels like a win for renewable energy & NY state's climate goals 🌟 the government was all like "national security concerns" but didn't even bother to explain themselves properly πŸ˜’ guess we're gonna see more offshore wind projects popping up in 2024 🌊

I'm so glad to hear that justice is being served for Equinor's Empire Wind project 🌟! This decision is a huge win for renewable energy and the environment, and I think it's amazing that the judge held the government accountable for not providing sufficient explanation for their halt order 😊. It's crazy how fast the offshore wind market is growing - China is leading the charge, which is awesome to see 🌎! Of course, there are still some naysayers out there, but I think it's time we give credit where credit is due to pioneers like Equinor and Revolution Wind πŸ’š. Can't wait to see what 2024 brings for this industry!

🌟 just saw this news about the Empire Wind project being cleared to resume construction 🌊 it's amazing how a federal judge is basically saying that the government's concerns aren't as solid as they thought πŸ˜… and at the same time, all those people who were worried about national security are still like what's going on? πŸ€”

anyway, i think this is a huge win for renewable energy and it's awesome to see New York Governor Kathy Hochul standing up for her state's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions πŸ’š and did you know that the global offshore wind market is expected to grow even more in 2024? 🌈 that's just so cool!

lol what's with the Trump admin trying to stop offshore wind projects? like isn't that just gonna make our lives worse in 20 years or so when they're all done? 🌊 anyway, i was thinking about my niece's birthday party this weekend and we were gonna have a huge cake with like a million candles but then she changed her mind at the last minute and wanted a piñata instead... can you imagine walking into that room full of kids and just seeing one little kid standing there looking all disappointed? 🀣

omg u guys i cant even believe this 🀯 so like there was a halt order on some wind farm project in new york and the gov was all worried about national security but now a judge is like "nah fam" and said they can keep building πŸŒ‰ i mean idk what's going on with the trump admin but it sounds like theyre trying to slow down climate change progress which is super sus πŸ€” and btw has anyone noticed how many ppl are actually against offshore wind farms? its kinda weird πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ

im so surprised that a trump appointee judge gave equinor the green light πŸ€” it just goes to show how much of an influence trump has on the judiciary system in this country πŸ™„ i mean who needs national security when you can power homes with wind turbines? πŸ˜’ and what's with the government not knowing about any potential threats before handing out a halt order? sounds like some pretty bad communication skills to me πŸ“

🚨 I'm not sure what's more concerning - the fact that a federal judge is having to step in to allow the Empire Wind project to resume construction or that the Trump administration was willing to pause it in the first place πŸ€”. It just seems like another example of how out of touch the current administration is when it comes to renewable energy and climate change πŸ’‘.

And what's with all these "national security concerns" being thrown around? I mean, we've got more pressing issues on our hands, like the fact that climate change is real and we need to start taking action ASAP 🌎. It's just so frustrating when politicians use vague excuses to block progress on projects that could make a real difference.

At the end of the day, it's up to us as citizens to demand more from our leaders and hold them accountable for their actions πŸ’ͺ. We can't just sit back and let them dictate what's best for us - we need to be the ones driving change πŸ”„.

I'm not surprised about this decision πŸ€”. It's just another example of how the courts are stepping in to make sure that the Trump admin's decisions aren't just some knee-jerk reaction. I mean, who gets to decide what's good for the country and what's not? Not the politicians, apparently.

And honestly, it's about time someone stood up to those concerns about national security 🚫. The East Coast is already a busy shipping lane, and offshore wind farms aren't exactly going to bring down the whole system. It's just more money being wasted on unnecessary lawsuits.

But you know what really gets me? The fact that people are still having this back-and-forth over renewable energy πŸ’ͺ. We're talking about something that could literally save our planet, and some folks are still worried about a few lost jobs or increased costs. Come on, people! Let's get moving on this already ⏱️.

And btw, I'm loving the fact that New York Governor Hochul isn't afraid to speak her mind πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. It's about time someone in power started using their voice for good instead of just spewing out empty rhetoric.

omg what's going on with this offshore wind project 🌊😬 so like equinor is finally free to build its empire wind thingy again and i'm low-key hyped about it πŸ’₯ meanwhile the trump admin was trying to halt it over national security concerns but honestly who knows what they're talking about πŸ€” anyway, it's just another example of how courts are stepping in to save these renewable energy projects πŸš€πŸ’š plus, china is gonna dominate the offshore wind market next year and we should be reppin them for that πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³πŸŒŸ what do you guys think about this whole situation?

I'm so down for this halt order 🀣 I mean who needs a bunch of renewable energy projects ruining the coastlines and harming marine life? The Trump admin is totally doing us a solid by putting the brakes on this Empire Wind project. It's about time someone looked out for national security... or at least, that's what they're saying πŸ˜‚. I don't trust these offshore wind farms to start with, all that noise pollution and stuff. And can we talk about the environmental impact? It's a total hoax. Give me fossil fuels any day!

πŸ™Œ just saw that a judge is giving Equinor the green light to keep building the Empire Wind project 🚨 can't believe the Trump admin thought they could just shut it down w/o explanation tho πŸ€” anyway, it's great news for NYC and NY state who are all about renewable energy πŸ’š the fact that this project alone will power half a million homes is insane 🌎

πŸ€” I gotta say, this whole situation with the Trump admin's halt order on the Empire Wind project is wild πŸŒͺ️. Like, can't they see that renewable energy is the future? 🌞 We're already seeing growth in the global offshore wind market and it's only gonna get bigger πŸ’Έ. It's like they're stuck in the past, you know? πŸ”™

And what's up with this Judge Carl J Nichols being a Trump appointee? πŸ˜’ That just adds fuel to the fire, imo. I mean, shouldn't he be impartial or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But nope, it seems like he's got some beef with Equinor and their concerns about procedural irregularities. Procedural irregularities? What are they even talking about? 😴

On the other hand, I gotta give props to Governor Hochul and the states who are standing up for this project πŸ™Œ. It's great to see them fighting for what they believe in and pushing back against these bogus national security concerns 🚫. And let's be real, we all know that offshore wind projects are a game-changer when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 🌟.

So yeah, I'm rooting for Equinor and the Empire Wind project 🀞. Bring on 2024 and let's see what the global offshore wind market has in store! πŸŽ‰

πŸ€” so like a federal judge is saying Trump's administration didn't do its due diligence on the offshore wind project & now they can keep building πŸ’¨ meanwhile there's already another one getting back to construction after gov't messed up πŸ™„ this whole thing is kinda crazy especially with states & devs pushing back against national security concerns πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I mean, I'm not surprised that the judge gave Equinor the green light 🌟. It's like, the Trump administration is already under a lot of fire for their environmental policies, so it was bound to happen eventually πŸ’ͺ. And hey, at least someone's getting the project back on track! The Empire Wind project will be able to power over half a million homes - that's awesome news for New York and the country as a whole 🌎. And let's not forget, offshore wind is just one of those things that's gonna keep growing in popularity anyway πŸ“ˆ. I mean, renewables are the future, right? So, even if there are some naysayers out there (looking at you, Protect Our Coast New Jersey πŸ˜‰), we've gotta stay positive and focus on making progress πŸ’«.

the judge's decision is a major win for renewable energy, but it's also a reminder that the Trump admin has no qualms about using its power to stifle clean energy projects πŸŒžπŸ’‘ 70% of Americans support offshore wind as a way to reduce carbon emissions, so it's time to put the science over politics. construction on Empire Wind will add another 3GW of renewable energy to the grid by 2027, which is a huge deal for NY and NJ residents who want to see real action on climate change πŸŒŠπŸ”‹

meanwhile, the global offshore wind market is projected to grow by 25% in 2024, with china accounting for half of that growth πŸš€πŸ’Έ. we need more investment in clean energy, not less πŸ’Έ. the industry insiders are right, but what about those who don't have a seat at the table? πŸ€”

and let's talk numbers... the empire wind project is already 60% complete and will power over half a million homes by 2027 πŸ“ˆπŸ’‘. that's like taking 1.2M cars off the road, which is equivalent to a 200gm reduction in co2 emissions per year πŸŒŽπŸš—

idk why the gov't is being so strict about this empire wind project πŸ€”... it's not like they're building a nuclear power plant or anything πŸ˜‚. offshore wind farms are actually really good for the environment and stuff 🌱. i mean, we should be encouraging more renewable energy projects, not trying to slow them down. and can we please just get over the national security concerns already? πŸ™„ it's like, what's the worst that could happen? a bunch of birds might get killed or something 🐦. anyway, glad the judge ruled in favor of equinor... now let's hope they can finish this project ASAP so we can start harnessing some real clean energy πŸ’š.

I'm loving how this is playing out πŸ˜‚. I mean, who needs national security threats when you've got renewable energy to power half a million homes? 🌞 It's crazy that the Trump administration was trying to pause construction in the first place - it just shows how invested they are in keeping fossil fuels alive πŸ’Έ. The fact that Equinor is moving forward with their Empire Wind project is huge news, and I'm stoked that New York Governor Hochul isn't letting it slide πŸ™Œ. It's all about progress now! As the industry continues to grow, I can see why experts predict a surge in offshore wind market growth by 2024 - China leading the charge? Bring it on 🀩!
