Kenwood, Leo boys basketball coaches suspended by IHSA for four games

Two Illinois high school basketball teams, Kenwood and Leo, have been hit with a combined four-game suspension by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). The penalty comes after both teams failed to follow rules related to practice scheduling and scrimmages. In November, Kenwood coach Mohammed Cookbey allowed his team to participate in a scrimmage that was not allowed under IHSA regulations. Leo coach Jimalle Ridley also made a mistake, with the school citing an error in judgment from Ridley. The Lions won all four games under interim coach Mario Pittman after the incident.

As for Kenwood, the suspended game against Farragut on Tuesday has been identified as one of the ones that will be lost due to Cookbey's misstep. Additionally, they have games against Dyett and Young which fall within their span, with Cookbey missing those matches in total. The IHSA decision comes after an investigation by Chicago Public Schools Office of the Inspector General, who looked into allegations of residency rule violations among Kenwood players.

The case is not new to the Broncos. In March 2024, five Kenwood players along with coach Mike Irvin and two assistant coaches were ruled ineligible due to their alleged failure to meet IHSA residency rules. The team eventually played on in the state tournament despite the issue before losing in the sectional semifinals.

I think it's kinda harsh that both teams got suspended, but at the same time, can't expect them to be perfect with all these new rules and regulations πŸ€”. I mean, it's not like they were cheating or anything, just a simple case of miscommunication, you know? Coach Cookbey should've double-checked those scrimmage rules before allowing Kenwood to participate, and Leo coach Jimalle Ridley was probably caught up in the heat of the moment too πŸ˜’. Still, four-game suspension is pretty steep for one mistake. And what's with all these residency rule violations from last year? Shouldn't they've had more time to get it sorted out before getting suspended again πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

I mean come on... four games of suspension for a mistake that could've happened to anyone? I'm not saying the coaches didn't make a mistake, but it seems kinda harsh. πŸ€” I don't get why they're being punished so hard. And what's with all these residency rule violations? It just smells like a bigger problem is going on beneath the surface. Can't we focus on teaching kids how to play basketball instead of stressing them out about rules? πŸ˜’

can't believe these high school teams got caught up in this mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... just think about how much time those kids are gonna lose from their season because of some rules they messed up πŸ˜”. i mean, coaches gotta keep it straight somehow... four games is a pretty steep penalty for mistakes like that, but at the same time... shouldn't they have known better by now? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and another thing, what's with all these residency rule violations lately? does nobody do background checks on these players anymore? 🚫 just seems like an extra layer of complexity to an already complicated sport. i'll believe it when i see it...

This is just another example of how sports can reflect our flaws as a society πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, who gets suspended for 4 games when there are bigger issues going on? Like, have you seen the conditions in some of those Chicago schools? The lack of funding and resources is real πŸ€‘. It's like they're focusing all their energy on suspending teams instead of fixing the problems that really matter πŸ’”. And what's with the residency rule violations? Are we even taking these issues seriously? πŸ˜’. I'm not saying the coaches didn't make mistakes, but it just feels like a distraction from the real issues at hand πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. We need to be focusing on supporting our schools and communities, not just punishing them for minor infractions 🚫.

πŸ˜’ I'm so surprised they're actually getting punished for messing up... like, what's the point of having rules if everyone can just make exceptions? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ These coaches were probably just trying to get their teams ready for the season and didn't think it through. And let's be real, who hasn't made a mistake in coaching before? πŸ˜… It's not like they intentionally tried to cheat or anything. The IHSA should just give them a slap on the wrist instead of suspending games. πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ

aww man, these Illinois high school basketball teams are having a tough time πŸ€•. I mean, I get it, mistakes happen and all that, but four games? that's like, a whole season of losses πŸ†πŸ˜¬. And to make matters worse, they're dealing with residency rule violations again... it's like, they can't catch a break πŸ˜”. But you know what? I still believe in the power of sports to bring people together and teach us valuable lessons 🀝. These players, coaches, and teams are not defined by one mistake or penalty - they have so much potential to grow from this experience πŸ’ͺ. Maybe it's time for a fresh start with some new perspectives and leadership πŸ‘₯πŸ’¬.

πŸ€” I'm not buying into all this drama. Four-game suspension? That's pretty harsh, especially considering how many other teams have had similar infractions and gotten away with less. It feels like Kenwood's got a bit of a target on their back - first the residency rule thing, now this practice scheduling mess... is it just bad luck or are they getting singled out for something?

And can we talk about Leo coach Jimalle Ridley for a sec? An error in judgment? That's pretty broad. I mean, I'm not saying Ridley was right to skip the scrimmage, but come on, let's see the full story before we start doling out penalties. It feels like some teams are getting away with stuff while others get nailed. Not cool. 🚫

I'm so fed up with this whole thing! I was really looking forward to watching those games, especially Kenwood's against Farragut πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. But now they're gonna lose those games and it's not fair on the other teams who played them all already. And what's even more annoying is that it happened again in November, which is just ridiculous! You'd think they'd know the rules by now πŸ˜’. I mean, I've seen my friends mess up with their group projects, but this? It's like a whole different level of mistake 🀯. Can't Kenwood just follow the rules for once and not make all these drama-filled mistakes? I'm not sure how the players are gonna bounce back from this too...

Omg I'm literally shook by this news 🀯 - I mean can you even imagine having to coach a team with all those eligibility issues going on? Like, how do you keep track of who's supposed to be from where and whatnot?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It sounds like it was a nightmare for the teams involved. And poor Kenwood, they already dealt with this stuff last year and now they're getting hit again... what even is that?! 😩 I can imagine how frustrating it must be for Coach Cookbey to have to deal with all these extra stressors on top of just trying to coach a team πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. And btw, those Leo players totally took advantage of the situation and won all their games under interim coach Pittman... like, nice job Lions! πŸ‘
