LSU fires football coach Brian Kelly

LSU Unloads Coach Brian Kelly in Fourth Year of Decade-Long Deal Amid Disappointing Season

The Louisiana State University athletic department has made a significant shake-up by firing head coach Brian Kelly, effective immediately. According to Scott Woodward, the school's athletic director, Kelly's decision to leave after four seasons will cost LSU about $100 million, a staggering figure that highlights the team's struggles in recent years.

Kelly, who took over at LSU in 2021 and has led the Tigers to a 34-14 record since his arrival, failed to deliver on the promise of multiple SEC championships during his tenure. Instead, the program struggled to compete with top-tier teams, including Texas A&M, which handed them a crushing 49-25 loss over the weekend.

The move comes as no surprise, given LSU's disappointing season. The team has lost two straight games and is currently ranked fifth in the Southeastern Conference. Kelly's inability to lead the Tigers to a playoff berth despite significant investment in recruiting and player development was seen as a major letdown for Woodward, who hired Kelly with the expectation of securing a national championship.

Despite some success on the field, including reaching the 2022 SEC title game and mentoring quarterback Jayden Daniels into a Heisman Trophy winner, Kelly's tenure was marked by inconsistency. The school had previously offered Kelly a significant extension through the 2031 season, but negotiations have broken down over the terms of his departure.

Kelly, 64, will be replaced by associate head coach Frank Wilson, who will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. Woodward has vowed to maintain LSU's high standards, stating that the program will not "lower our standards" or compromise its pursuit of excellence.

The move marks another significant change in LSU's football leadership since the departure of Ed Orgeron in 2021. The school's athletic department has been embroiled in controversy over player compensation and recruiting tactics, including a major buyout for former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher last year.

Kelly's departure raises questions about whether Woodward will be able to replicate his predecessor's success at the helm of LSU football. For now, it remains to be seen how the program will bounce back from this significant setback.

Ugh man, 100 million bucks gone down the drain ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ’ธ just because Kelly couldn't deliver that SEC championship. I mean, I get it, seasons come and go but still, that's a huge chunk of change. And to make matters worse, they're already saying they won't lower their standards? Like, what even is that? ๐Ÿค” It's just gonna be more of the same old thing... I need to see some changes in the way they do recruiting and player development before I get on board with this new interim coach Frank Wilson. Maybe someone should just reformat the whole team's strategy sheet, you know, give it a fresh start? ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ’ป

Man, can you believe what just happened? They're axing Coach Kelly like that! I mean, I knew they were struggling, but $100 million? That's crazy talk! ๐Ÿค‘ Back in my day, we didn't pay that kind of cash to fix a losing season. And what's with all these coaching changes? First Ed Orgeron, now this guy... it's like they can't even get it right.

I'm not surprised they're keeping it internal, though - Frank Wilson, huh? At least he knows the system. I just hope Woodward doesn't go crazy trying to prove a point or something. LSU needs some stability, you know? They've been through enough already. ๐Ÿคฏ It's gonna be tough for them to bounce back from this, that's for sure...

omg is this guy for real? 100 million bucks gone down the drain because he couldn't lead them to a sec championship lol what was LSU thinking? they paid him a fortune and still managed to mess up the playoffs like twice ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ‘Ž francis wilson is gonna have a tough time fixing this but hey at least they're not paying jimbo fisher anymore ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm shocked, but not surprised. I mean, I knew they were struggling lately ๐Ÿค”. Four years is a long time, and you'd think they'd get some wins by now. The $100 million exit fee is crazy, though... that's like buying an entire stadium ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I hope Frank Wilson can turn things around, but it won't be easy. They gotta rebuild the program from the ground up. It's a shame, too - Kelly had his moments, like that 2022 SEC title game win ๐Ÿ†. Still, consistency is key in college football, and they just didn't deliver.

ugh $100m is crazy... like what did they even get in return for getting rid of him? he had some good years but consistency is key i guess that's why they're gonna have to find someone new now ๐Ÿค” LSU needs to focus on recruiting and building a solid foundation before making another big change

OH MAN, I'M SHOOK BY THIS NEWS!!! Lsu is like totally losing their coach and they're gonna lose like a ton of money too! $100 million is CRAZY! i feel bad for brian kelly tho, he's been trying his best but it just didn't work out ๐Ÿค•. this change in leadership has me wondering if scott woodward is ready to take on the challenge of getting lsu back to where they need to be ๐Ÿ’ช. and what about frank wilson? is he gonna be able to bring some stability to the team? only time will tell ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I mean, come on... 100 million bucks for one guy? ๐Ÿคฏ That's just crazy talk! I remember when college football was all about passion and pride, not just about winning at all costs. Coach Kelly just couldn't seem to get it done, no matter how much money they threw at the problem. And now he's gone, and I'm sure there'll be more shake-ups before this program figures itself out. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's like they say, "you can't buy class"... but I guess that's exactly what they tried to do! ๐Ÿ˜…

so LSU just dumped their coach after 4 years ๐Ÿคฏ $100 million is a crazy amount of money for him to go but i think its about time they made a change. kelley's record wasnt exactly stellar, especially considering all the hype around him when he first took over. and lets be real, losing to texas a&m like that is just embarrassing ๐Ÿ˜ณ

i dont think its surprising at all that woodward decided to make a move now that they're already 5th in the sec and have two straight losses. kelley's inability to get them into the playoffs was a major letdown for him and for everyone else who expected more from him.

the thing is, lsu has been through some drama in recent years with player compensation and recruiting tactics, so its hard to say if they'll be able to find someone who can restore their football program to its former glory. frank wilson's gonna have his work cut out for him ๐Ÿค”

come on , what a waste ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. $100 million down the drain for one bad season? that's just crazy. i mean, kelly was supposed to be the savior of lsu football, but turns out he couldn't even get them to a playoff berth ๐Ÿˆ. and now they're gonna break up with him after 4 years because the product on the field just ain't there ๐Ÿ’”. what's next? firing the team's entire coaching staff? or maybe just giving 'em all a parting gift of $50 million each ๐Ÿ˜‚. seriously though, scott woodward needs to reevaluate his strategy because this one's not gonna cut it ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

๐Ÿค” The way they just dropped Brian Kelly like hotcakes is wild. I mean, 4 years and $100 million gone, all because of a disappointing season? That's a lot of money for one coach's departure ๐Ÿค‘. And let's be real, LSU knew what they were getting into when they hired him - a guy with some big shoes to fill after Ed Orgeron left. But still, it feels like Woodward and the athletic department just didn't see it coming, you know? The team was struggling for years before this season, but maybe that's on them too ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Either way, Frank Wilson is stepping in now, so we'll just have to wait and see how he does ๐Ÿ‘€. One thing's for sure though - it's gonna be a wild ride at Death Valley Stadium for the rest of the season ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

idk man ๐Ÿค”... can't say i'm surprised lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ they were always gonna fire him eventually. but still think lsu messed up by not giving kelly more time. he had some good years, like that 2022 sec title game ๐Ÿ†. andjayden Daniels is a legit heisman winner ๐Ÿ™Œ. but at the same time... kelly's tenure was pretty inconsistent. like, one week he'd win big, next week they'd lose by like 30 points ๐Ÿ˜ณ. and that 49-25 loss to texas a&m? yikes ๐Ÿคฎ. so yeah, i'm all for frank wilson taking over as interim head coach ๐Ÿ™Œ... but can we pls just get some stability in the coaching staff? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

๐Ÿ˜ฌ I mean, what's up with these massive buyouts? $100 million is crazy! ๐Ÿค‘ It's like they're paying Kelly to just leave. And the season's already tanking, so I'm not sure why it's worth breaking up now. ๐Ÿค” The program needs some serious overhaul, if you ask me. All that money spent on recruiting and player development isn't translating to wins, you know? ๐Ÿˆ It's like they're throwing good money after bad. ๐Ÿ’ธ The coaches are always the first to go when things aren't working out, but what about the system or the players themselves? ๐Ÿ‘€ Is it time for a total shake-up at LSU? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg u guys i cant even believe what just happened at LSU they literally fired their coach after 4 yrs and its gonna cost them like a billion dollars lol im not surprised tho the guy was all over the place last yr and couldnt lead them to nothin but losses he did manage to make one of their qbs win the heisman tho so idk why they didn't just give him a raise or somethin anyway i feel bad for scott woodward cuz this is gonna be super hard 4 him 2 find someone who can turn it around i guess we'll c how it all plays out

๐Ÿ’ธ $100m is just crazy! I mean, you're investing that kind of cash in a coach and he can't deliver? I'm no expert but it seems like LSU needs to rethink their whole approach to recruiting and player development. I get that coaches make mistakes but four years is a long time to be stuck on the same old thing ๐Ÿค”. Plus, 64 and still getting paid $10m+ a year? That's just wild ๐Ÿ’ธ. Can't say I'm surprised though, season has been pretty underwhelming ๐Ÿ˜. Wonder how Woodward's gonna fix things now ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

What a mess is happening in Death Valley ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿˆ! 100 million bucks just flushed down the drain because Kelly couldn't lead the team to victory? ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm not surprised tho, he's been struggling since day one ๐Ÿ’”. LSU needs someone who can bring consistency and make playoff runs, not some hot-and-cold coach like Kelly ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Frank Wilson's gotta do better than this if they wanna turn it around ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘Š. And btw, 64 yrs old? That's ancient in the coaching world ๐Ÿ˜‚. Time for a new era at LSU โฐ.

I'm literally shocked ๐Ÿคฏ by this decision! I mean, Brian Kelly was a solid coach and all, but four years is a looong time to be stuck on one job. And that $100 million buyout? Crazy talk ๐Ÿ’ธ. I think Woodward should've been more patient with him or at least given him some more creative control. The Tigers need someone who can shake things up and bring in some fresh talent. Frank Wilson's the man for the job, but can he really lead them to a playoff spot next year? ๐Ÿค” Only time will tell! ๐Ÿ‘€
