LSU fires football coach Brian Kelly

LSU's Brian Kelly Ousted as Coach Amid Loss to Texas A&M

The Louisiana State University football team has fired its head coach Brian Kelly after a disappointing loss to No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday night, leaving the program without direction and sparking questions about the future of the athletic department.

Kelly's four-year tenure at LSU was marked by high expectations following his hiring in 2021. However, the Tigers failed to achieve the promised level of success, finishing with a record of 5-3 and 2-3 in conference play. The loss to Texas A&M was Kelly's second straight defeat, and it capped off three consecutive losses for the team.

Athletic director Scott Woodward announced the decision on Sunday night, stating that "the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize" during Kelly's time at the helm. Woodward had high hopes when Kelly arrived four years ago, but ultimately felt that the program fell short of expectations.

Kelly's tenure was marked by several notable achievements, including a trip to the 2022 SEC title game and the development of quarterback Jayden Daniels into a Heisman Trophy winner in 2023. However, he also struggled to achieve consistency, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

Woodward's decision marks a significant shift for LSU, which had invested heavily in Kelly's hiring and vowed to make him the "outstanding leader, teacher and coach" who would lead the program to greatness. Instead, the Tigers' struggles have left Woodward facing an uncertain future, including the possibility of paying Kelly over $52 million if he refuses to leave.

Kelly's departure marks another blow to Woodward, who had previously navigated a similar situation with Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman earlier this year. The move also raises questions about the state of college football coaching salaries and the demands placed on top-tier programs like LSU.

In a statement, Kelly said that he would not compromise on excellence and vowed to find a new path that "fits our culture and community." However, his departure from LSU has left many wondering what could have been for the program during his time at the helm.

Wow 🀯 interesting how much pressure is on college football coaches to perform πŸˆπŸ’Έ $52 million is wild πŸ’Έ they gotta find someone who's gonna bring in that winning culture ASAP πŸ‘Š

.. can't say I'm surprised πŸ€”... coaching changes happen in college football all the time. it's not like LSU didn't have some amazing moments under Kelly - that 2022 SEC title game was wild! 🏈 but consistency is key, right? and it sounds like that wasn't quite Kelly's strong suit. wonder if he'll end up getting paid out by LSU... can't blame the athletic director for trying to make a change, though 😬... now we just gotta see what happens next for the Tigers. πŸ’ͺ

ugh, another coach bites the dust πŸ™„... i feel bad for brian kelly, he had some good years at lsu but consistency was a major issue πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. 52 million dollars is a lot of cash, i wonder if he'll take it or walk away πŸ’Έ. scott woodward's gotta navigate this whole thing carefully, can't afford to mess up the athletic department again πŸ™. lsu needs someone who can bring that winning culture back, hopefully they find the right person πŸ‘.

omg, i cant even believe they let brian kelly go lol he had some awesome moments like dat heisman winner jayden danials but tbh his team was pretty meh overall πŸ˜’ i feel bad for scott woodward tho, hes gotta navigate all this uncertainty now πŸ€” and college football coaching salaries are just getting crazy πŸ’Έ like whats next? 52 mil is insane! πŸ€‘ anyway, kelly seems to be taking it in stride, but idk what he's gonna do next πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

omg lol what just happened 🀯😱 i'm so shocked!! i mean i knew brian kelly's team wasn't that great this season but i didn't think they'd fire him πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ like, what's going on? scott woodward is supposed to be the genius who made all these high hopes about kelly's hire and now he's just dumping him πŸ’Έ 52 million dollars? no way! i love brian kelly btw he's a legend πŸ™Œ can't believe they're gonna pay that much for someone else. what about jayden danials though? did they even consider his future or was it all about the money? tbh i'm kinda sad this happened because i had high hopes for lsu too πŸ€”πŸ‘€

you know what's wild? have you ever tried those new matcha soft serve cones from baskin robins πŸ¦πŸ‘€ they're super rich and creamy, but also kinda weirdly perfect? like, i was thinking about how kelley's tenure at lsu went down the drain after that one loss to texas a&m, and then i started craving those matcha soft serve cones lol anyway, it seems like scott woodward is in for a wild ride trying to fix up the program now πŸ˜‚

man this is so weird they went from high hopes to total dumpster fire in like 2 seasons 🀯 and now scott woodward's gotta deal with all the drama and potential lawsuit πŸ€‘ anyone think kelly was due for a change? πŸ€” personally i think he showed some flashes of brilliance but consistency eluded him πŸ”₯ maybe they just needed someone else to shake things up at lsu πŸ‘Š what do u guys think would've made it work?

πŸ€” this is such a shame, LSU had so much potential with Kelly at the helm... but I guess 4 years is a decent amount of time to make big changes πŸ“Š and it's not like he didn't have some awesome wins under his belt - that SEC title game was lit πŸ”₯! but consistency has always been an issue for him, i get why Woodward would want a fresh face in the coaching chair πŸ’ͺ... now I'm curious to see who they'll bring in next and if they can finally turn things around 🀞

Man, this is crazy... 🀯 I mean, I get it, losing to Texas A&M isn't gonna make or break a season, but 5-3 and then two straight losses? That's not exactly what you'd call a promising start for Kelly's tenure. And the fact that they only managed to win 2 games in conference play is just... ugh πŸ™„. I'm surprised Woodward didn't fire him sooner, to be honest. He had some great moments, like when Jayden Daniels won that Heisman Trophy, but overall, it feels like Kelly just couldn't get the team to gel. And now we're stuck with a coach who's gonna cost us $52 million if he walks? That's just not right πŸ€‘. I'm not sure what the future holds for LSU, and I'm curious to see how Woodward navigates this situation...

can you believe it? brian kelly's tenure was full of promise but ultimately fell flat 🀯. 5-3 record ain't exactly setting the world on fire πŸ†. and now he's outta there with a hefty payout πŸ’Έ. i feel bad for scott woodward, though - he's gotta deal with this mess now 😬. college football coaching salaries are getting crazy πŸ’Έ. what's next? top coaches gonna start demanding private jets and mansions like they're on some reality TV show πŸš€? anyway, hope kelly finds a new gig that suits him πŸ‘

idk man... I'm so confused about this situation 🀯. On one hand, I get it, 5-3 record is not exactly what you'd call a success, especially with all the hype around LSU πŸ™„. But on the other hand, Brian Kelly did lead them to an SEC title game in 2022 and won the Heisman Trophy for Jayden Daniels... that's some impressive stuff πŸ’―! And let's be real, losing three straight games is not exactly a string of wins πŸ˜‚.

I'm also kinda torn about whether or not Kelly should get paid $52 million if he leaves πŸ€‘. On one hand, I think he earned it after all the good things he did for the program πŸ‘. But on the other hand, it's just that much money πŸ’Έ... and I don't know if it's fair to the university.

Ugh, my head is spinning 😴. I need some time to think about this one πŸ€”.
